It’s not every day that we are invited into the studios of

contemporary craftspeople, but the Select Trail 2015 is

doing just that. We are being allowed to experience an

insight into the creative world of the designer-makers in

Stroud and surrounding areas, an offer too good to pass

up. SITselect, a not for profit arts organisation dedicated

to the promotion of the arts, is giving us a chance to see

where the inspiration and hard work takes place, long

before the finished artwork is wrapped and shipped off

to galleries and exhibitions around the world.

This invitation lays the craftsperson bare to the eyes of

their audience. It is a courageous undertaking by the

individual and one which shows a strong belief in

the artists’ vocation. By showing connection between

artist, materials and processes, the unravelling of their

practice becomes clearer. The ambience of galleries and

workshops is contagious, talent and endurance

admirable, and the opportunity to watch how new work

is created, will be a treat.

Let’s celebrate this chance to experience some of our

talented craftspeople at work by visiting as many of the

studios, exhibitions and workshops on offer. Some of

the venues can be visited on foot whilst some necessitate

an undulating drive through the countryside and picture-

postcard villages. These promise to be days to remember.

Jenny Bicat trained in Fine Art. She puts colour into

cloth drawing on her knowledge of painting. In her

studio she develops, using traditional (non-digital)

screen printing techniques, intricately engineered

designs on silk, linen and calico – flat pattern pieces

that she hand sews (then makes) into unique scarves,

jackets and occasional decor pieces. She delights in

combining the best traditions of twentieth century art

modern fashion.

Liz Lippiatt follows the great tradition of working with

cloth in the Stroud Valleys. Liz designs and screenprints

on silk, velvet and fine linen, creating collections for

fashion and furnishings. She is renowned for her fine

devore silk velvets. In recent years Liz has worked on

‘textile-led’ projects in collaboration with Studio Seven,

a group of seven textile artists. The group has staged

pioneering ‘textile led’ performances and installations

exploring unconventional ways of showing textiles.

The Textile Studio is in Stroud town centre in Stroud

Fionna’s jewellery reflects her interest in closely

observed form and texture. Mark-making techniques are

combined with vitreous enamel, precious and non-

precious materials. General themes and inspiration

which run through the work are notions of delicacy,

fragility and the strangeness of materials when seen up

close and out of context.

Liz has been a fashion designer and a lecturer in fashion

design since the 1970s. Her knowledge and experience

of research and design, pattern cutting, construction

and finish (all working with cloth) have provided a rich

background for her obsession of working with paper.

Now joyfully released from the worlds of industry and

education, she relishes the perversity of making clothes

and fabrics which, by being made in paper as well as by

being assembled behind sealed glass, are both

inaccessible and unwearable.

mixed fabric such as rich velvets, pastel cottons and

rainbow wools to build up pieces having a myriad

of colours and textures. Designs are built up in layers of

the colour phasing of his work. She has worked with

schools and projects to create pieces including memory

rugs. Member of the Waterways Craft Guild.

On foot: From Slad Road walk through Park Gardens

Valerie comments that, “As a practitioner my roots are in

the tradition of landscape and still-life painting. My recent

work has involved drawing painting, printing and sewing

in direct response to the landscape of Miami and the

Cotswolds. I layer, superimpose and repeat details from

studies of shimmering water and marine life, fish, shells,

flowers etc within structures that echo both Eastern

carpet design and formal grid of the city. I regard these

‘landmarks’, natural and man-made as equally transient.”

Shireen Morrisjoint artist-led exhibition at Frogmarsh Mill

Frogmarsh Mill, South Woodchester, Stroud GL5 5ET

m: 07979 746074

e: [email protected]

Shireen enjoys painting bright, lively and colourful

paintings using mixed media. By working mainly from

still life she arranges flowers, fruit and interesting

vessels to create an almost edible subject, full of life and

vitality, inspiring her to begin her work. By incorporating

soft beautiful unison pastels, tissue paper, found old bits

of paper (unfinished work) until colour, tone (from mono

prints that she produces) and vibrancy have been reached.

Shireen painted with Anthony Hodge for many years,

someone who inspired her and who is sadly missed.

SITselect – what we do

We aim to broaden the perspective for textiles to other

art forms and to link to the applied arts and crafts.

If you are new to SITselect, we have rebranded. Stroud

International Textiles is still there as smart

undergarments, but SITselect now embraces all the

applied arts with textiles still very much at the heart of

our world. We are passionate about profiling the

handmade and the joy of making.

SITselect makes a significant contribution to prosperity

and economy of the region through our annual festival

and year round events. 2014 has seen exciting

developments which have included talks at Heal’s in

London and the launch of our biannual Selected Journal.

Sold in outlets nationwide, it can be downloaded to your

mobiles and tablets to read on the move.

On 23 -25 October 2015 we are launching a new event

in Cheltenham Town Hall. The event, called Select

Showcase, will have maker stands, talks, workshops

and our annual conference as well as many more

exciting and inspiring events to enjoy. Keep an eye on

our website.
