It’s not every day that we are invited into the studios of
contemporary craftspeople, but the Select Trail 2015 is
doing just that. We are being allowed to experience an
insight into the creative world of the designer-makers in
Stroud and surrounding areas, an offer too good to pass
up. SITselect, a not for profit arts organisation dedicated
to the promotion of the arts, is giving us a chance to see
where the inspiration and hard work takes place, long
before the finished artwork is wrapped and shipped off
to galleries and exhibitions around the world.
This invitation lays the craftsperson bare to the eyes of
their audience. It is a courageous undertaking by the
individual and one which shows a strong belief in
the artists’ vocation. By showing connection between
artist, materials and processes, the unravelling of their
practice becomes clearer. The ambience of galleries and
workshops is contagious, talent and endurance
admirable, and the opportunity to watch how new work
is created, will be a treat.
Let’s celebrate this chance to experience some of our
talented craftspeople at work by visiting as many of the
studios, exhibitions and workshops on offer. Some of
the venues can be visited on foot whilst some necessitate
an undulating drive through the countryside and picture-
postcard villages. These promise to be days to remember.

Jenny Bicat trained in Fine Art. She puts colour into
cloth drawing on her knowledge of painting. In her
studio she develops, using traditional (non-digital)
screen printing techniques, intricately engineered
designs on silk, linen and calico – flat pattern pieces

jackets and occasional decor pieces. She delights in

Liz has been a fashion designer and a lecturer in fashion
design since the 1970s. Her knowledge and experience
of research and design, pattern cutting, construction
and finish (all working with cloth) have provided a rich
background for her obsession of working with paper.
Now joyfully released from the worlds of industry and
education, she relishes the perversity of making clothes

being assembled behind sealed glass, are both
inaccessible and unwearable.

the tradition of landscape and still-life painting. My recent
work has involved drawing painting, printing and sewing
in direct response to the landscape of Miami and the
Cotswolds. I layer, superimpose and repeat details from
studies of shimmering water and marine life, fish, shells,
flowers etc within structures that echo both Eastern

Tessa Tyldesleyjoint artist-led exhibition at Frogmarsh Mill
Frogmarsh Mill, South Woodchester, Stroud GL5 5ET
t: 01453 882647
www.tessatyldesley.co.uk
Tessa designs jewellery using semi-precious stones and
silver beads. Her approach to designing is very much
influenced by her ‘painter’s eye’ and an empathy with
colour. The combination of colour and texture creates
implied movement. Her work can be seen in galleries
and shops in Gloucestershire. Commissions are welcome.
On the A46 halfway between Stroud and Nailsworth.

SITselect – what we do
We aim to broaden the perspective for textiles to other
art forms and to link to the applied arts and crafts.
If you are new to SITselect, we have rebranded. Stroud
International Textiles is still there as smart
undergarments, but SITselect now embraces all the
applied arts with textiles still very much at the heart of
our world. We are passionate about profiling the
handmade and the joy of making.
SITselect makes a significant contribution to prosperity
and economy of the region through our annual festival
and year round events. 2014 has seen exciting
developments which have included talks at Heal’s in
London and the launch of our biannual Selected Journal.
Sold in outlets nationwide, it can be downloaded to your
mobiles and tablets to read on the move.
On 23 -25 October 2015 we are launching a new event
in Cheltenham Town Hall. The event, called Select
Showcase, will have maker stands, talks, workshops
and our annual conference as well as many more
exciting and inspiring events to enjoy. Keep an eye on
our website.
