Solitaire™

Inspired by lantern style gas luminaires, Solitaireis a classic, yet relevant to current architecture.The optical systems are identical to those usedin many other Kim luminaires, requiring in aperfect blend of aesthetics and performance.Should a little more traditional appearance bedesired, the luminous top adds definition withoutreducing area lighting capability. A lower whiteacrylic lens produces even more identity, andwhen combined with the luminous white acrylic

top, produces a decided jewel-like appearanceto the luminaire. Finally, an induction fluorescentlamp option provides 100,000 hours of troublefree operation, and instant-on capability.Solitaire is inspired by designs past, classicallyrendered, and infused with all the modernperformance features you have come to knowfrom Kim.

KIM THEORY OF RELATIVITYThe purpose of this guideline is to bring a cohesive look to outdoor lighting, maximizing lighting efficiency while preserving the architectural experience. Simply stated, the Kim Theory of Relativity says “Poles belong in parking lots. And, once you leave the parking lot, the outdoor lighting should become less and less conspicuous until it becomes an integral part of the architecture.” In addition, the luminaire style and geometry should remain consistent. If this guideline is utilized, the outdoor lighting will enhance the site and architecture, bringing unity to the outdoor lighting scheme.

As Distance to Architecture Decreases, Luminaire Height and Scale Also Decreases

Luminaire design and style remain constant to unify the lighting scheme

LANDSCAPE / PATH ZONENear the building, luminaires should begin to disappear, blending into the landscape and hardscape elements.

BUILDING / PERIMETER ZONENo pole mounted luminaires should ever be used near the building, as they will dominate the architecture. The only exception would be the use of decorative luminaires to delineate entrances to the structure. Building mounted, architecturally compatible fixtures should be almost invisible.

PEDESTRIAN ZONEAs you leave the parking lot and transition to pedestrian areas, poles should decrease in height to 10' - 16'. In addition, luminaires should decrease in scale, and can have more decorative features to be appreciated at the pedestrian level.

SITE / ROADWAY ZONEParking lots and roadways require luminaires on 20' - 40' poles to efficiently light these large areas. Therefore, this lighting becomes dominant, and sets the design and style for all other lighting as you progress towards the building.

SRS2 and SRS3 - Luminous White Acrylic TopAvailable in Type II, Type III, Type IV, and Type V Squaredistributions (SRS2). This system provides maximum cutoff controland very good uniformity. The addition of a luminous white acrylictop increases fixture presence. Symmetric Diffused downlightdistribution (SRS3) produces a soft glow and maximum fixturepresence.

A lensed opening in the reflector illuminates the top lens withoutcompromising optical performance or chamber seal.

A sealed housing, which contains the optical assembly, andperformance reflector technology allow this horizontal lamp opticalsystem to maximize lamp output. An optional houseside shield isavailable for Types II, III, and IV distributions (SRS2).

SRS1, SRS4 and SRS5 - Die-Cast Aluminum Top OnlyAvailable in Asymmetric and Symmetric distributions, providingvertical lamp performance in a compact luminaire profile withexcellent uniformity. Symmetric Diffused downlight distribution(SRS4 and SRS5) produces a soft glow and maximum fixturepresence.

Twin Mount VariationsBecause the Solitaire head can be rotated 360°, twin arm mounting can produce a variety oflight patterns. This produces a more uniform site appearance. The examples below arevariations that can be achieved using asymmetric light distributions II, III or IV.

Sealed HeadThe optical compartment is completely sealed, including wireentries. The bottom acrylic lens is sealed by molded siliconegaskets. By eliminating the intrusion of moisture, dust, and insects,the efficiency of the optical system is maintained. This assuresmaximum light output between standard maintenance intervals.

Fabricated Reflector ConstructionSolitaire™ reflectors are constructed of specular smooth andtextured Alzak® optical elements, formed on class A tooling. Theseprecision optical components are fastened into a rigid shell.

Induction Lamp ConceptThe induction fluorescent lamp is a state-of-the-art source, utilizingno electrodes or filament as in conventional discharge orincandescent sources. In this lamp, light is generated by means ofinduction – the transmission of energy via a magnetic field –combined with gas discharge. Mounting, Installation and Maintenance

Easy MaintenanceThe reflector module easily lifts out forrelamping. Captive screws in the top coverand a mechanical prop-rod to hold thereflector open, means relamping is simpleand easy.

Easy InstallationThe ballast module is factory prewired with quick-disconnect plugs. Modularconstruction and key-hole slots simplifyassembly on the job site.

FM - Flush Mount Installations utilizeKim’s patented wedge grip. A singleconcealed bolt attaches the fixture.

PT - Pole Tenon Mount Installations areheld in place by four set screws. One set screwis drilled into tenon to prevent fixture rotation.

Post Top MountingThe Solitaire™ post top mounting can beinstalled either flush to square cut roundpoles, or to tenon top poles. This proportion aid is intended to help in visualizing and selecting the best Solitaire™ system and pole height to satisfy aesthetic requirements. Remember, the pole height also affects performance; the higher the fixture is mounted, the greater the light throw. If poles are mounted on concrete pedestals such as in parking lots, the height of pedestal must be considered in selecting the pole height. Pole height for the Solitaire™ series should not exceed 20'. For mounting heights above 20', consider the AC series of Kim products.

Mounting Height

As a pedes t r ian sca leluminaire, Solitaire™ is mostcommonly mounted on 8' to20' poles. Within this heightrange, the fixture, coupledwith the standard 4 " polediameter, provides pleasingproportions. Wide throw lightdistributions also provideoutstanding uniformity ofillumination. This translates tomaximum pole spacing, andthe economy this brings interms of initial cost and longterm energy conservation.

The role of a PedestrianScale Luminaire

A true pedestrian scaleluminaire like the Solitaire™

can satisfy many diverserequirements. Where polemounting heights are restrictedby local code and aesthetics,the Solitaire™ series is ideal. It is specifically designed forbroad illumination at lowmounting heights, in suchlocations as parks or alongsmall streets, where maturetrees would block the light if taller poles were used. The smaller scale of one or two story structures maydictate the use of a pedestrianscale luminaire so lightingequipment does not overpowerthe architecture. These are justa few instances whereSolitaire™ provides anexceptional solution.
