A). RESEARCH:

ASSISTANT ACAROLOGIST (1.5 Years) Joined in the Department of Entomology, PAU, Ludhiana on 16.10.2007 up to 31.3.2009. Worked on mites under the following objectives (All India Co-ordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Agricultural Acarology, Bangalore, India):

Table. Salient observations recorded during the laboratory and field studies.

Sr. No.

Name of experiment Observations recorded

1. Estimation of crop losses due to two-spotted mite, Tetranychus urticae on brinjal

The yields of protected and unprotected plots were recorded excluding the border rows on either side of the plot so as to minimize border effects and the crop loss was calculated. So there was a 36.65 % reduction in yield of brinjal due to mite infestation

2. Estimation of crop losses due to brown mite, Petrobia latens on wheat

The avoidable losses in yield in different treatments indicated that dimethoate, oxydemeton methyl and fenazaquin were the most effective treatments having 16.67, 16.19 and 10.71 per cent avoidable loss in yield respectively

3. Studies on brown wheat mite, P. latens on wheat and development of management strategies

Dimethoate had quick knock down effect as it caused highest reduction in mite population closely followed by oxydemeton methyl 2-DAS (days after spray) and fenazaquin 7-DAS. Dimethoate recorded highest wheat yield followed by oxydemeton methyl and fenazaquin. Their yields were at par with other pesticides except diafenthiuron but significantly better over untreated control

4. Evaluation of newer compounds against mites infesting brinjal

Fenazaquin (Magister 10 EC) @ 300 and 400 g.a.i. / ha were highly effective in reducing population of Tetranychus urticae up to 14-DAS, followed by propargite (Omite 57 EC) @750 ml /ha. Based on data observations, Omite 57 EC was approved in REC meeting for adaptive trials in 2009

5. Monitoring acaricide resistance in T. urticae to some compounds in tomato and brinjal

Laboratory studies in brinjal revealed fenazaquin 10 EC (magister) and wettable sulphur 80 WP as the most effective acaricides against mites respectively after 24 and 48 hours. In tomato, these studies revealed the fenazaquin as the most effective acaricide after 24 and 48 hours observations

6. Biosystematics of plant associated mites in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh

Mite fauna recorded on different plants belonged to 5- families: (i) Tetranychidae:a).Tetranychus sp.-brinjal, okra, chilli, tomato, bell pepper,

cucumber, water-melon, bottle-gourd, ridge-gourd, musk-melon, ash gourd, longmelon plum, guava, rose, wild-rose, sinduri, tulsi, marigold, french-bean, lobia, zuraitta, dhek

b). Panonychus ulmi on applec). Petrobia lateens -on wheatd).Oligonychus sp.- maize and sugarcane(ii) Tenuipalpidae:a). Brevipalpus sp. - lemon, kinnow, citrus, guava, loquat,

pomegranate, samunder sokh, ashwagandha, mugh, malkangni, bajradanti, kari patta, wild rose, tulsi, rose, castor, karanju, marigold, cock’s comb, kali, akhlifa and aclocleema

(iii) Tarsonemidae:a). Polyphagotarsonemus latus - brinjal, chilli, bell pepper,

guava, pear, lobia, samunder sokh and motia,(iv)Eriophyidae (Gall/bud/worm mite) - malkangni, motia and

lasoora (v) Oribatidae (Soil mites) - guava, litchi, anantmul, ban lasson,

turmeric and samunder sokh7. Exploration of natural Predaceous/parasitic mites recorded on different plants

enemies in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh

related to 6-families:(i) Phytoseiidae:

a).Phytoseiulus sp. - brinjal, bell pepper, cucurbits, guava, plum, litchi, peach, jamun, wild rose, tulsi, sinduri, rose, turmeric and panchaulib). Amblyseius sp. – do-

(ii)Stigmaeidae:a). Agistemus sp.) - brinjal

(iii) Anystidae:a). Anystus sp. -banlasson, anantmul, motia, congress grass,Citronella grass

(iv) Bdellidae:a). Bdella sp. - ban lasson and congress grass

(v)Cunaxidae:a). Cunaxa sp. - anantmul

(vi) Trombididae (valvetty mite/ veer vauti) - house dust8. Monitoring of mites on

guava and chilliPopulation richness of mite fauna related to 5 families:

Phytoseiidae (predatory mites),tarsonemidae (broad mite/yellow mite), tetranychidae (spider mites), tenuipalpidae (false spider mite), phytoseiidae (predaceous mites) and oribatidae (soil mite) on guava and two families- tarsonemidae followed by tetranychidae were reported on chilli

Recommendation: Omite 57 EC (Propargite)@300ml/acre against two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch on brinjal.

ASSISTANT ENTOMOLOGIST: Transferred to this post 5.3. 2009 in the Plant Clinic, Directorate of Extension Education, PAU, Ludhiana till date.

1. Senior Research Fellow (SRF): Worked from August7th 2003 to June 19th 2006 under the scheme “Dissemination of Insecticide Resistance Management Strategies in 26 Districts under ICDP mini mission-II of Technology mission on Cotton”, Department of Entomology, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. In this project more than 100 villages were selected in districts Bathinda, Mansa and Ferozepur of Punjab and in each village, 50 cotton growers each with at least 1 hectare land were adopted for implementing University’s package of practices, these villages were called as IRM-villages. The outputs of IRM and non-IRM were compared, the results revealed much benefit to IRM village farmers, as in non-IRM everything was performed by farmers .i.e., agromic, soil, entomological, pathological and agronomic practices in a non-judicious manner. The papers published on these aspects are also presented in this bio-data.
