Score (circle score

a) development of the site for housing would have no detrimental local ecological impact
5
b) development of the site for housing would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation
The site is of some ecological value, providing habitats for invertebrates, birds and small mammals. Trees and hedgerows should be buffered and retained to provide movement through the site. Wildlife planting should be considered in the design of the site to mitigate for loss of habitat during development. Buildings may require bat surveys. Japanese Knotweed will require professional removal.
3
c) development of the site for housing would result in very detrimental ecological impact

Any other comments
The site contains a mix of rank neutral grassland with tall herbs, scattered scrub and denser scrub areas providing habitats for a range of wildlife. A kestrel was seen hovering near viewpoint DEA4-9, indicating the presence of small mammals on the site. There are several industrial buildings on the western section of the site. There is a large stand of Japanese Knotweed adjacent to one of the buildings (Photo DEA4-17).

2 RECOMMENDATION
Mitigation measures / design considerations Score
a) Development of the site would have minimal detrimental local ecological impact.
b) Development of the site would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation.
The site comprises buildings and hard standing which have low ecological value. The tall ruderal habitat, dense scrub, amenity grassland and unimproved neutral grassland are species poor habitats that are limited in size and isolated. There is abundant similar habitat directly adjacent to the east of the site, which is botanically more diverse. Ephemeral habitat although botanically more diverse than the rest of the habitats within the site is limited in size. The woodland is also limited in size and there is woodland directly adjacent to the west of the site. It is recommended that scattered tees and the woodland area along the western edge is retained and also a strip along the southern boundary of the site to create a buffer for the dismantled railway. Japanese knotweed is present on site which should be eradicated prior to any works.

4 FURTHER INFORMATION
Brief Site Description
The site lies to the east of Goldthorpe and comprises three buildings with associated hard standing. The remainder of the site comprises predominantly overgrown impenetrable scrub and tall ruderal habitats with a small area of amenity grassland in the northwest corner and a small patch of broadleaved woodland. Small areas of species poor unimproved neutral grassland are scattered through the site and there is a small area of ephemeral habitat.
Additional comments / information
Figure 1 shows the Phase 1 habitat map for the site. Figure 2 shows the areas with significant ecological value. The data search revealed that great crested newts have been recorded to the south of Barnburgh Lane. There are no ponds within the site boundary and OS maps and aerial photos do not show and waterbodies nearby. However, due to the proximity of the records further investigation of the surrounding land is recommended.

Site Description
The site is located at the eastern edge of Goldthorpe. There is housing adjacent to the north and west. To the east is an open area of grassland and scattered scrub, with further housing beyond. A dismantled railway corridor bounds the site to the south. The site comprises a derelict building (Telephone Exchange) which is metal clad with a flat roof, and two further buildings that are currently still in use. One is a brick built warehouse with an open front and associated hard standing to the north. The other is near the northern edge of the site and is brick built with corrugated asbestos roof. There is hard standing to the south of this building and a small vegetated area to the north. Beever Street leads through the site to the buildings and then ends. The remainder of the site comprises predominantly overgrown impenetrable scrub and tall ruderal habitats with a small area of amenity grassland in the northwest corner and a small patch of broadleaved woodland. Although small pockets of tall ruderal habitats are scattered throughout the site, the largest area stands centrally within the southern section of the site. This habitat is impenetrable and is dominated by creeping thistle Cirsium arvense with abundant false oat grass Arrhenatherum elatius and locally abundant rosebay willowherb Chamerion angustifolium and nettle Urtica dioica. Teasel Dipsacus fullonum, hogweed Heracleum sphondylium and bramble Rubus fruticosus are occasional. Main areas of dense scrub are impenetrable and dominated by bramble with scattered hawthorn Crataegus monogyna, willow Salix sp. and elder Sambucus nigra. A strip of rank species poor unimproved neutral grassland south of the telephone exchange building is dominated by false oat grass. Other grass species include frequent red fescue Festuca rubra and abundant cock's-foot Dactylis glomerata. Herbs are rare with only red clover Trifolium pratense occurring occasionally. Scrub is scattered throughout, comprising hawthorn and dog rose Rosa canina. A small area of open grassland within the southern edge of the site, adjacent to the dismantled railway line, is slightly more diverse but still species poor. It is dominated by false oat grass with other grasses including frequent red fescue, black bent Agrostis gigantea and Yorkshire fog Holcus lanatus. Herb species are occasional and include common vetch Vicia sativa, common knapweed Centaurea nigra and meadow vetchling Lathyrus pratensis, with locally abundant bramble and rosebay willowherb. A mown area of amenity grassland lies within the northwest corner of the site. This seems to be part of a larger area of public open space, which extends to the west where it becomes park land with scattered and dense tree pockets. Trees are scattered along the western boundary and comprise a mix of species including young oak Quercus sp. and silver birch Betula pendula, a mature goat willow Salix caprea and a row of hawthorn. A small pocket of trees is present along the south western corner of the amenity grassland within the site. This wooded area has a dense canopy with species including ash Fraxinus excelsior, and sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus. A well developed scrub layer comprises a mix of native and non-native species including dogwood Cornus sanguinea, garden privet Ligustrum ovalifolium, rowan Sorbus aucuparia, hawthorn and bramble. Nettle is locally dominant within the field layer. Two stands of Japanese knotweed Fallopia japonica (TN1) lie to the north of this woodland, between the woodland and a pocket of dense young alder Alnus glutinosa. A small area, formerly consisting of hard standing, is located within the south eastern corner. This is the most diverse habitat within the site and comprises ephemeral/short perennial habitat heavily grazed by rabbits. No species is dominant with only occasional fine grasses including red fescue, annual meadow grass Poa annua, common bent Agrostis capillaris and Yorkshire fog. Herbs are dominant with a mix of species including ribwort plantain Plantago lanceolata, greater plantain Plantago major, common cat's-ear Hypocharis radicata, common vetch, ox-eye daisy Leucanthemum vulgare, common centaury Centaurium erythraea, common knapweed, autumn hawkbit Scorzoneroides autumnalis, perforate St. John's-wort Hypericum perforatum, Canadian fleabane Conyza canadensis and colt's-foot Tussilago farfara.

2 RECOMMENDATION
Mitigation measures / design considerations
Score (circle score
awarded)
a) development of the site for housing would have no detrimental local ecological impact
5
b) development of the site for housing would result in some adverse local ecological impact but there is scope for mitigation
The northern section of the site is most suitable for development. The southern section contains dense scrub habitat of ecological value to birds and small mammals. Development of this site should consider the breeding bird season and retain trees and scrub areas where possible.
3

Heritage Assessment H52 South of Beever Street Archaeology : Amber/Green, site policy required Setting : Green – No Adverse Impact Contribution of allocation to the setting of Mary Magdalene (Goldthorpe) - low The proposed allocation is 251m to the south of St John and St Mary Magdalene Church – Goldthorpe (1151169). No impact due to lack of intervisibility, distance involved and modern urban development already in between.
