Though they admitted to being hesitant when they first applied, Ring said, “We were surprised to hear that we did qualify and were selected.” While the process was challenging, after meeting site supervisor, Jack Monaghan, Ring and Susan said they “liked the idea of being part of the building team,” and their hard work certainly paid off! Now that they have their own home, Ring and Susan confess that they “...love being the only people making noise in the house” and that owning a home gave them a sense of achievement that renting did not provide. With this busy schedule, we rely heavily on our incredible group of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers with all levels of experience do everything from framing the houses to painting the walls and we could not get these homes finished without them. We currently have eight homes under construction at our Community Lane site in Coatesville. Six of those houses will be completed before our new homeowners move in this fall. Each of these families have worked tirelessly over the past year to complete their 200 hours of “sweat equity” by assisting at the job site and attending several informational home-owning classes. The remaining two homes are in the early stages of construction and are for our next group of homeowners in 2015. Next up, we are beginning to move forward with plans to build eight 5-unit townhomes in West Grove. While we will not be breaking ground on these 40 homes for another year or so, we hope to break ground on infrastructure this fall!

S ITE L INES NEWSLETTER OF HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF CHESTER COUNTY

Happy Settlement Season!

In the next few weeks, six families will officially make settlement and begin their

journey as homeowners in their respective, new Habitat homes. Each family has a

unique story that continually reminds us of our mission to build affordable

housing in partnership with hard-working Chester County families. Thanks to the

support of volunteers and donors, their dreams of owning a home have become a

reality!

One such family is Ring Mariik and Susan Mal. Before moving into their Habitat

home, they were living in a Downingtown apartment with their three small

children. Ring heard about Habitat several years ago from a volunteer, but did not

consider pursuing his housing options until Susan and his children joined him in

the United States from Egypt. Though they admitted to being hesitant when they

first applied, Ring said, “We were surprised to hear that we did qualify and were

selected.” While the process was challenging, after meeting site supervisor, Jack

Monaghan, Ring and Susan said they “liked the idea of being part of the building

team,” and their hard work

certainly paid off! Now that

they have their own home,

Ring and Susan confess that

they “...love being the only

people making noise in the house” and that owning a home gave

them a sense of achievement that renting did not provide.

We wish Ring, Susan, and their children all the best and hope they

are fully enjoying their new home!

Construction Update

This summer is especially busy at our Coatesville build site as our crew finishes a

We currently have eight homes under construction at our Community Lane site in

Coatesville. Six of those houses will be completed before our new homeowners

move in this fall. Each of these families have worked tirelessly over the past year

to complete their 200 hours of “sweat equity” by assisting at the job site and

2015.

Next up, we are beginning to move forward with plans to build eight 5-unit

Caln Plenty of new and exciting changes have been occurring at

our Caln ReStore! In July, a new pricing strategy was

implemented to keep our inventory fresh, while still providing

a good value for our customers and keeping our mission to

build affordable homes in mind. Did you know the profits

from our Caln ReStore build more than two Habitat homes a

year? With our customers’ continued support, we are

confident that we can push that number even higher.

You may have also seen some new faces in the ReStore. We

have added loyal customer, Kristen, to our store associate staff, and have recruited several regular

volunteers to join our dedicated team. We are certain these exciting changes will enable us to help

more families!

Kennett Square Did you know that our Kennett Square ReStore is the largest thrift store in southern Chester

County? The Kennett ReStore may have only just recently celebrated its second birthday, but it has

quickly established itself as a premier thrift store in the area! Similar to its sister-store in Caln

Township, the Kennett ReStore offers furniture, hardware, and just about anything you could need

to renovate or redecorate your home. However, this 16,000 square foot space is also home to a

huge selection of designer clothing. Shop our great deals for the whole family and be sure not to

miss the monthly $10 a bag clothing sale or monthly 50% off everything sale!

Recognize these regular Kennett ReStore volunteers? Chris Adams, Rita

DeCola, and Todd Deloplaine have been lending a hand for the past two

years, doing everything from helping in the warehouse, stocking and

sprucing up shelves and racks, to answering phones, all while being

friendly faces for our customers.

Todd was a regular ReStore customer, but when he was asked to assist

with a DVD player, he became hooked and has been volunteering ever

since. Rita answered our Volunteers Wanted advertisement in the Daily

Local News and encouraged her friend, Chris, to join her. Chris has found

that, “although the Restore is a retail business I feel a part of something

bigger knowing that the proceeds are used to build new homes for low

income residents.” Both Chris and Rita admit to being organizers and put

their talents to use, making the store neat and tidy. Todd enjoys a variety

of tasks including fiddling with electronics and assisting in the warehouse as the lead volunteer.

The common bond between all of our volunteers is their desire to make a difference in the

community and the enjoyment they get in helping our customers. All three enjoy keeping busy,

while interacting with the customers they have gotten to know. As Chris points out, “their

excitement is contagious!”

Volunteers like Rita, Chris, and Todd are invaluable members of our Habitat team, and we are

always looking for more volunteers to join them in their efforts. Rita assures, “The ReStore is a fun place to volunteer and it is

satisfying knowing that the proceeds go to help people who might not be able to afford a home of their own.”
