Ulm, Jan 31, 2019

Hans Joohs Cultural Exchange Program 2019

Dear Mayor Beussman,

Getting to know the similarities and differences of professional training in the US and Germany and taking a deep dive into the American Culture by living in an American family – that’s my motivation to take part at the exchange program for young professionals in our Sister City New Ulm, the Best City to Live in Minnesota!

I’d love to grab lunch at Lola’s, continue with meeting Hermann the German, having a donut from The Bäckerei in my hand, and finish the day with an Oktoberfest Beer (Märzen-Style) after the Schell’s Brewery tour.

After my Secondary School Leaving Certificate in 2014 I finished successfully my apprenticeship as a mechatronic in January 2018 at the “Ulmer Maschinenteile GmbH” (Ulm Machine Parts), a company producing, distributing and installing tool grinding machines worldwide – also in the US.

Since then, I am employed as an Electronic Technician in the department assembling tool grinding machines. After a phase collecting practical experience, I plan to proceed in my education to become a certified engineer.

To strengthen my skills and knowledge further, a temporary employment abroad as a young professional would fit perfectly to my plans. Working as a technician in a department dealing with assembly, service and/or maintenance of machines would be my favorite choice, since this suits best to my background and interests.

I am looking forward to receiving your invitation. I would love to share my German culture, especially my experience in cooking with our friends in New Ulm.

Best regards

Felix WillmannHugo-Roller-Weg 5789077 [email protected]

Application for the Hans Joohs Cultural Exchange Program 2019

between the cities of Ulm, Germany, and New-Ulm, Minnesota

Dear Mayor Beussman,

After my interview with Mr. Martin Bendel and his colleagues, I want to introduce myself to you. I am studying medicine in my third semester at the University of Ulm. I apply for the Hans Joohs Cultural Exchange Program, because I would appreciate the opportunity to get to know the American everyday work life, to improve my medical English (C1 level), gain new experiences and also get in contact with new people. During a three-weeks student exchange to the United States of America to Paynesville (Minnesota) and Chicago (Illinois) and during a three-months au pair stay in London, I gained some experiences in foreign countries, expanded my cultural knowledge and discovered my passion for other countries, languages and cultures. I would gladly amplify them with work experience in the United States, preferably in New-Ulm Medical Center. After my Graduation, I completed a voluntary social year where I worked at the children´s clinic in Ulm with new-borns and preterm-births. After quite a short amount of time I was already able to nurse the little patients on my own. Medical tasks like equipping the babies with stomach tubes and the assistance during (eye) examinations were also part of my daily routine work. I also represented the ward secretary in times of holidays or sickness. Therefore I got in contact with the bureaucracy of a hospital and learned how to handle any administrative issues. In addition to my voluntary social year I also completed a few more internships in the field of medicine at the university medical center in Ulm (center of surgery, remedial gymnastics and clinic of psychiatry, systemic psychotherapy).

During my researches about New-Ulm, the New Ulm Medical Center crossed my path. Being able to work there would be the perfect opportunity for me to exert my theoretical and practical medical knowledge. I am particularly interested in learning about the American health system as well as the prospect of working with people from different countries. If it is not possible to work in the New Ulm Medical Center, I would like to work with children in other ways, e.g. helping out in a school. The possibility of meeting new people and exploring the American culture is also very attractive to me.

I would really appreciate the chance to take part in this work exchange programm. Sincerely,

Subject: new problem - too many good candidates

Dear Vicky,

We had our assessment meeting last Friday. We have a new problem, we had four really very good or even excellent candidates and we have a problem to decidewhat to do. Two of them are very joung and we could ask them to apply again next year. One is an apprentice at the Cityand we could organize that next year for him.

But two of them are so good that the whole committee asks if it could be possible to send two interns this year. Weknow that this could only be an exception. Of course we also offer you to send also two interns this year or next year. Could you please ask Robert Beussman informally if this could be possible. We of course will ask formally for this. The background is: they are very different. One is a young student of medicine. She is very, very good and she reallywants it. One time she will be a perfect doctor. With a lot of feeling for people and very intelligent and active in all kindof social activities.

The other is a nice young man, more the technical type, loves to work with hands. And he is very active in cooking, loves to give cooking lessons, a very social guy. So, please could you ask in advance for me. I will send the official mail with the CVs of those two the next days.

How is it with you? Have you found someone this year? Maybe more than one? Kind regards

Your German friend Dorothea

A couple of days ago Dorothea Hemminger asked me about our fire department celebrating their 150thanniversary. Since then I have met with Paul Macho ( fire chief) and he informed me that they are having acelebration in September 2020.

Invitations have gone out to several fire departments in Germany. Attached to this email is a copy of theinvitation that went out to those departments. It has not been sent to Dorothea or the Mayor but needs to be

discussed at the next meeting as to whether or not we want to invite them. Please put this on the agenda for

the February meeting.

I will not be attending this meeting.
