This May, we enjoyed hosting our sister city colleague, Kamila Tovbaeva, from the Friendship Center (FC) in Dushanbe. Kamila is part of the management team of MBO Professionals that

manages the FC. We were happy to learn about their continuing success operating the FC as an international language school, where they offer classes in English; at their centers across Dushanbe, they also offer French, German, Russian, Chinese, and Tajiki courses. Kamila visited colleges in the Denver area as well as CU campuses to learn more about programs available to international students. She also met with the YMCA of the Rockies to learn about their summer internship programs. Finally, we visited the CU-Boulder center for internships to promote the possibility of CU students teaching English at the FC. Kamila is a wonderful representative from the Friendship Center. We are lucky to have her as a colleague.

Visit by Kamila Tovbaeva from the Boulder-Dushanbe Friendship Center in Dushanbe

The Friendship Center in Dushanbe is beginning to come into its own as an established English Language Center. Students of all ages attend English classes there. The

management team of Olim Olimov, Bahodur Tabarov and Kamila Tovbaeva have opened an American-style cafe in the center and have created a vibrant and active facility. Plans are in place to construct a fence surrounding the property for security and aesthetic purposes. Congratulations!

News from Dushanbe...

The Friendship Center in Dushanbe is looking for native English speakers who can teach or assist with teaching English classes

at the Boulder-Dushanbe Sister City Friendship Center. They are looking for teachers for the summer or semesters during the school year. For more information, contact Kamila Tovbaeva ([email protected]) at the Friendship Center or Sophia Stoller ([email protected]) in Boulder. Make a Difference for Kids TODAY in Tajikistan

We recently received a note from an educator in Isfara, Tajikistan, who participated in an Open World program here in Boulder

several years ago. He shared with us an American teacher’s efforts to improve School #2 in this region by installing two new heaters and new windows. Supporting public education by keeping facilities functional is critically important. If you would like to learn more or support this effort, visit: https://www.gofundme.com/rb9p93jw.

This past summer, board members Noal and

Adam Amir traveled to Central Asia to produce a series of folk films with and for local communities. They went funded in part by a Lush Charity Pot Grant, awarded to their project under the aegis of BDSC. The board voted to support them with an additional grant to help with travel expenses. Noal and Adam began in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. They spent a month making films in the Tien Shan and Alai Valley, then travelled overland to Tajikistan. There, they continued their work, shooting a film in the Wakhan and another in the Hazratishoh. They continued onto Dushanbe, where they met Olim Makhkamov, Bahodur Tabarov, and Kamilia Tovbaeva, the team now running the Friendship Center. Together they produced a short video about the Center (which will be posted on BDSC’s website). Noal and Adam also had dinner with a group of former Open World delegates: Muyassar Qozieva, Malika Khamidova, Gulnoz Ibragimova, and Nazira Begnazarova. This summer Noal hopes to return to the same communities to continue her research.
