Archery TV Four Millions Views During the 14-15 August 2010 weekend the YouTube Archery Channel exceeded the four million video views. FITA’s archery videos were launched on YouTube at the end of December 2007. This confirms a yearly output of 1.5 million views. The World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden, USA and World Archery Field Championships in Visegrad, Hungary were the latest two major archery events that allowed going beyond the four million views barrier. As a novelty this season, an Archery Fan Reporter was appointed in Ogden and Visegrad to give the inside-out of these two events. This first in archery history has also been a great success and was followed by many viewers. Visit www.archery.tv to view all this!

FITA Judges Claude OLSEN (FRA) It is with great sadness that FITA learnt of the passing away of Mr Claude OLSEN (FRA) on 2 August 2010, aged 75 years old. Mr OLSEN was a FITA Honorary Judge and a former International Judge. Claude OLSEN had an intense sports life and was Honorary Vice President of the French Archery Federation (FFTA). He became Honorary Judge of the International Archery Federation (FITA) in 2003 after serving as an International Judge since 1975. In France he was awarded with the Youth and Sports Gold Medal title in 1989 (Bronze Medal in 1976 and Silver Medal in 1981). He was also honoured at the latest FFTA General Assembly with the Great Gold Medal, among other awards he received. Within FFTA, he was a Member of the Governing Body (1972-2000), Vice President (1984-2000), Office Member (1976-2000), and Member of the Sports Commission (1976-1996).

Claude OLSEN and Philippe BOUCLET (FFTA President) Mr OLSEN served both as a National and International Judge in several national, European and world championships, and also at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. He was a Member and then the President of the National Judges Commission. He also was a Member of the Organising Committee for several European and World Championships held in France. Upgrade to International Judge Status Several vacancies are available for FITA International Judge (IJ) Status. These positions can be filled by FITA International Judge Candidates according to Book 1, Article 12.1.1, Appendix 4 of the FITA Constitution and Rules. International Judge Candidates who wish to apply for IJ status would fill in the upgrade form found on www.worldarchery.org, have it signed by the required persons and send it to [email protected] by 15 October 2010. Séverine FREYMOND remains at your disposal for any questions.

Clean Sport "Shoot Clean – Say No! to Doping" Campaign The World Archery Clean Sport department, in partnership with WADA, has launched a promotion campaign called “Shoot Clean - Say No! to Doping”. The aim of this campaign is to show FITA’s involvement in the fight for a clean sport, through a visible, modern and eye-catchy design. It aims at heightening the awareness of every archer in the world, from beginners to top level, on the importance of shooting clean, with respect and fair play. In the last decade, only few doping cases—mostly due to ignorance—have been treated in archery. As much as we want to fight cheaters, we also want to make sure every archer in the world does know what this is about and is conscious of all substances that enter their body. We want to make archers aware of the dangers of doping, not only for their sporting career, but also for their health.

Page 4: Singapore (SIN) August 20 10 - World Archery Federationdocuments.worldarchery.org/Federation/Newsletter... · she set a new junior world record, beating by four points the record

Archery is a sport of precision, concentration, focus, elegance, where doping has no place to be. This is the image and lesson we want to teach the youngsters taking up the sport, the true essence of archery and sport in general. It is a state of mind, where body, mind and spirit are combined to reach the perfect shot, a clean shot. More on the campaign on www.worldarchery.org and on Facebook! Should there be interest in this campaign from National Federations, please do not hesitate to contact Chantal STEINER ([email protected]).

Olympic Solidarity Development of the National Structure INA

From our Member Associations Bangladesh This country has applied to an Olympic Solidarity Scholarship for Coaches, in order to allow Mr Md. Nure ALOM to attend the Level 1 Coaching Course at FITA Middle East Archery Centre (MEAC) in Cairo, Egypt from 26 September to 23 October 2010. The Bangladesh Archery Federation also intends to arrange Olympic Solidarity Coaches Course in Bangladesh in December this year.

A Korean Coach in Brazil To prepare the archery events of London 2012, but also of the 2016 Olympic Games to be organised on its ground, Brazil has contracted a Korean archery coach, Mr LIM Hee Sik. The 42-year old has coached two major Korean archery company teams, Hyundai Steel and I & I Steel. Until last year, he coached Kinki University from Osaka, the top archery team in Japan. LIM's wife, WANG Hee Kyung, was a member of the gold medal team in the 88 Olympics and a former archery coach. Mr LIM Hee Sik works at the Archery Training Centre of Marica in Rio de Janeiro.

OH Kyo Moon, HAN Seung Hoon, IM Hee Sik, PARK Ji Soo, CHUNG Jae Hun, KIM Chung Tae are some of his most famous athletes with whom he won several medals and titles at major national and Asian archery events, but also European Grand Prix and recurve men's individual and team gold medals at 2005 World Archery Championship with CHUNG Jae Hun. Chinese Taipei The Chinese Taipei Archery Association got the financial support of the Olympic Solidarity (OS) to prepare the Asian Games in Guangzhou (CHN) to be held on 12-27 November 2010. To prepare for these games the Chinese Taipei Archery Association sent a team to the 2010 World Archery Cup Stage 4 in Shanghai (CHN) to be held from 31 August to 4 September 2010. The air tickets, the registration fees and the accommodation bill will be paid with the OS funding for 12 athletes, three coaches and one official by the Olympic Solidairty programne entitled "Continental and Regional Games: Athlete Preparation".

Such "2009-2012 World Programmes" (there are several others) is available for any National Olympic Committee (NOC). This particular world programme gives the highest flexibility to the NOC regarding the choice of the sports to be assisted; therefore, the FITA Member Associations are strongly invited to apply for this programme through their NOC. If not, other National Sport Federations will benefit from it.

Archery in a Holiday Camp in Cameroon From 17 to 18 July 2010, in Ngoantet village at one hundred of kilometres from the capital of Cameroon, 75 holiday-makers have been introduced to archery. Two age groups were made. The oldest were supervised by Fernand BELIBI, the National Technical Director, and the group made of kids under 14 by Miss Carine TCHAPTCHET, student in the Institute of sports. The skills evaluation took place on 18 July 2010, allowing to assess these young people's capacities.

Mauritius Mauritius has been granted an Olympic Solidarity programme entitled "Development of the National Sport Structure". It is made of different legs, all of them under the expertise of Mr Josef PREISSER (RSA). On 17-25 July 2010, an Intense Training Camp (ITC) was organised. It aimed at three goals: firstly, to evaluate the work of those who passed the level I coach exam last year in October; secondly, to prepare them for the level II coach course which will be held next year; and thirdly, to prepare those potentially representing Mauritius at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, later this year. As guest there was the first FAA accredited level I coach from Namibia, Ms Marja WOORTMAN.

Every morning session the coaches (on an alternate basis) started to guide through warm-up exercises, followed by muscle exercises especially for the shoulder girdle. After that, the expert worked on the shooting form together with the coaches, with their beginner and slightly advanced archers. Then the expert gave examples on how to work with the local top archers to prepare them for Delhi: going through their individual bow setup, doing fine-tuning procedures, the use of an arrow speedmetre and its readings to be used for arrow selection programmes, proper equipment repair on site, showing optimum observing positions in competitions, and much more.

Two participant ladies. On the left, Ms D’UNIENVILLE Véronique who attended the 2008 Olympic Games

Another part of this ITC was to provide the participants with the material for the upcoming level II coach course and discuss and demonstrate many important items for that, such as for example more in-depth anatomy, psychology, the FITA rulebook, and so on. Although not being part of the coaching courses, special sessions with mental training were held in the afternoons. On the last day, the ITC was concluded with a fun shoot (staircase shooting) to especially demonstrate to the beginner archers that there can be a lot of fun on the shooting range while still keeping discipline and concentration up.

Pakistan Farman AHMED is a complete sport person: karate national champion for 13 years (1992-2005), he won five gold medals at South Asian Games. He is the coach of the karate national team, but also a rock climbing instructor, paragliding instructor and sports school teacher in primary branch. He has been awarded the National Medal of Honour for Sport Achievements. Now he he wants to share his love for sport and outdoor adventures to Pakistanis. He has created MAC Pakistan in February 2010, which is a sport Club that allows Pakistani people to practice outdoors activities such as camping trips, rock climbing, paragliding and archery! It is very hard to find archery coaches in Pakistan. With help of Mr SALEEM, national archery champion in 1996, AHMED has started archery coaching.

Page 6: Singapore (SIN) August 20 10 - World Archery Federationdocuments.worldarchery.org/Federation/Newsletter... · she set a new junior world record, beating by four points the record

August 2010 World Archery Newsletter Page 6

Thanks to the National Archery Association of Thailand, AHMED was allowed to participate to the Level 2 Coaching Seminar in Bangkok conducted by Mr Pascal COLMAIRE (FITA Development and Education Director). There is no way to find archery equipment in Pakistan: there is no manufacturer, no dealer, and the National Archery Federation is still a small federation. Hence AHMED and his French girl friend Soizic have decided to import few second hand bows from France in order to check the reactions for this sport. The first results were very positive.

Farman AHMED (PAK) at Level 2 coaching seminar on 11-17 May 2010

AHMED's region has not been hurt by the recent natural disaster, which is not the case for 1/5 of Pakistan, the size of UK territory. He immediately volunteered to assist his fellow citizens and has already organised four trips between Islamabad and Peshawar with a truck to carry supplies and vital goods. The donated items come from close relatives and friends as well as from paragliding and archery members. Now that the international assistance is arriving, AHMED plans are to do other round trips with teachers to offer recreational and educative days in the refugee’s camps. Archery will of course be on the proposed activities. For those who wish to assist AHMED in his efforts, please contact [email protected]. They are in need of almost everything! An Olympic Solidarity Scholarship was offered to Mr Bacary MANE, National Technical Director of this federation. It will allow him to attend the Coaches Course Level 1 which will be held at the Middle East Archery Centre (MEAC) in Cairo, Egypt from 26 September to 23 October 2010. FITA hopes that this help will strongly improve archery practice in Senegal.

From Judges and Coaches Committees Information to Coaches In 2009 there were many competitions where archers were either confused or just did not know the rules or regulations currently in place. The FITA Judges and Coaches Committees have started a series of small inputs that could be helpful to coaches and enhance their knowledge on rules and procedures to avoid extraordinary stress on their archers. Here information on Illegal Shooting Techniques and Archer's Equipment. 5. Illegal Shooting Techniques Over the last two years many archers have been told to change their pulling technique due to safety. Mostly it concerns compound archers, for two main reasons. Some of them have bows that are too hard for them to pull over the peak weight, so much so, that they use too much energy to be able to concentrate on the direction of the arrow. This heavy peak weight may cause them some injury. Secondly, if the release "goes off" the shot cannot be stopped and the arrow may travel a great distance and land in an area that is dangerous to other people or animals etcetera. The coaches have a responsibility to see that the bows are pulled so that, if the release activates, the arrow will not fly any higher than the top of the target. This is a technique that has to be trained from the very beginning not at a championship tournament. This may require the peak weight to be set so that is comfortable and manageable by the archer. The judges will of course look at the direction of the arrow when the full energy is in the bow, and they are not concerned about the direction of the arrow before that point. I.e. many archers lift their bow arm before pulling the bow in order to put their bow arm shoulder correctly into place. Sometimes archers/coaches may refer to other events where they have not been told to adjust their pulling angle, but that might be because the judges are considering the total possibility of danger, and that may vary due to the background of the targets. Another issue is the bows that have a built in brace on the bow hand side of the riser, some of them very close to the bow hand due to the archer’s shooting technique. One should be aware that the bow hand cannot regularly touch this brace, and thus give a kind of "stabilisation against torque". The judges will study this carefully during shooting, and will judge according to their opinion. The same goes for compound bows that are fitted with split cables, i.e. shoot through cables. These cables must not regularly touch the bow arm although fewer archers are using this type of set-up nowadays. From a coaching point of view it is essential to create a shooting technique that is safe and never needs to be adjusted, especially when it is least convenient, such as at world championship tournaments. 6. Archer’s Equipment When introducing new equipment to an archer, the coach has a certain responsibility regarding the legality of such equipment, as it could be quite disastrous for an archer if they have to correct their equipment at an event. It could also be a huge disadvantage for the archer if they need to change their technique to abide by the rules of shooting. First of all, you must be aware that equipment "for sale on the open market" is not necessarily legal in FITA archery events. What is legal is explained in the FITA rules. It is worthwhile to note some of the more common rules that seem to cause most confusion are mentioned below:

a) Equipment specified as being legal is explained in the rules; any other equipment is consequently not legal.

b) The archer is responsible for ensuring their equipment is legal.

Page 8: Singapore (SIN) August 20 10 - World Archery Federationdocuments.worldarchery.org/Federation/Newsletter... · she set a new junior world record, beating by four points the record

August 2010 World Archery Newsletter Page 8

The rules also state that if an archer is in doubt of the legality of their equipment, they should ask a judge for clarification. The judge will certainly help, but the legality question is still the responsibility of the archer (a judge making a mistake does not change the rules, etc). To be quite sure of the legality of the equipment being used, a request for interpretation, or clarification, should be sent to the FITA office in Lausanne, Switzerland by the national federation. Legality of the bows in the compound category is actually the easiest to confirm, as most "items" are legal. The limitation is basically the following: the bow can have a maximum peak weight of 60 lbs (be aware of varying tolerances on specific weigh scales, the archers cannot claim a weight more than 60.0 lbs). The "overdraw" cannot exceed 6cm, there shall be no electrics or electronics on the equipment and there cannot be more than one aiming point. It is advisable to set the peak weight of the bow a little less than the maximum permitted to avoid a need for this to be adjusted at a tournament. For recurve (and barebow, instinctive and longbow) the rules are more specific and have to be studied carefully). For field or 3D tournaments the equipment must not be modified in any way that would give any aid in estimating distances. This rule also applies to the compound bow category. If the archer uses illegal equipment, there are basically three courses of action that the officials can take:

a) The archer will be asked to adjust their equipment to make it legal, but no further action is taken because it is not considered to have given any advantage (so far).

b) The archer’s scores may be disqualified up to the point of the equipment adjustment, but they may continue to shoot and record a score from the point of the equipment correction.

c) The archer’s scores may be disqualified completely (this action may be used if the archer is considered to be knowingly cheating).
