Formative Assessment
Assessment for learning: Assessment for learning is formative, and involves both teachers and students in ongoing dialogue, descriptive feedback, and reflection throughout instruction.
(Black et al. 2002)
Formative AssessmentThe purpose is:● To promote further improvement of
student learning during the learning process
● To involve students in the ongoing assessment of their own achievement
Examples of Formative Assessment
●journaling
●exit cards
●concept maps
●performance tasks
●mini Topical Activities
Summative Assessment
Assessment of learning: Assessment of learning is summative, and involves determining the quality of the learning that has taken place at the end of a unit or theme, term, semester, or school year. Specific learning outcomes and standards are reference points, and grade levels may be the benchmarks for reporting.
Source: http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/parliamentary-replies/2010/09/primary-one-assessment.php
Summative AssessmentThe purpose is:● To measure student
achievement at a point in time for reporting and accountability
● To maximize student learning through standardized tests.
Examples of Summative Assessment
●quizzes●tests●exams
Formative Vs Summative Assessment
● Bite-sized assessments that are graded fall under the category of Alternative Assessments.
● Assessments could range from a show-and-tell presentation to a grammar/vocab/comprehension/writing worksheet.
● Alternative assessments are conducted throughout the term based on the students’ level of readiness.

Reading
Good readers can extract from the writing what is important for the task they are working on.
STELLAR● Vision: Children who love reading and have
a strong foundation in the English Language.
● Teaching and learning of the English language through more hands-on activities, including speaking and listening.
● Children learn reading and writing using books, with discussions led by the teacher.
STELLAR● Why STELLAR?
- Vocabulary is taught in context based on the stories that they have read in their books (giving meaning to words when we use in context)
- Allow children to express their thoughts in a conducive environment
- Plenty of discussion in class (builds up a child’s confidence when he participates)
A STELLAR LESSON – SBA
• SBA: Shared Book Approach• SBA- introduce a new Big Book to the
students and share the story with them. Students will predict the story by looking at the pictures and listening to the story to guess what might happen next.
• Teacher encourages students to share their opinions regardless of the accuracy of their answers.
A STELLAR LESSON – SBA • Students may be asked to participate in the
dramatisation of the book, depending on the content of the story that is read.
• Allowing students to participate in the dramatisation makes the story more relatable, especially for young children.
• After the students have been exposed to the book, they will be taught the grammar and vocabulary items, including sentence structures and other language items that are in the book.
A STELLAR LESSON – MLEA
• MLEA: Modified Language Experience Approach• All students will be exposed to the same
language experience when they participate in SBA.
• MLEA allows students to write a story with some prior knowledge compared to the traditional teaching style where some students may not be exposed to the content of the pictures and thus may not be able to formulate ideas for the story.
