The payout was huge, especially for French Goodbye owned by Dino Chouest and ridden by Vauna Walker. The 4 year old palomino gelding won the Futurity and Open 1D Average Championships after winning the first round of the futurity and open, and in the second round placing 5th in the futurity and 8th in the Open 1D. All totaled, he won $98,281 plus an additional $5,781 for breeders Randy and Vauna Walker, and $11,563 for the stallion owners of The Goodbye Lane. And for some more impressive numbers, French Goodbye and Walker ran a 16.567 in the first round on a standard pattern at the Lazy E Arena! “It’s only a few hundredths off the world record on a standard,” Walker said. “I’m so ecstatic about this colt. It’s been really fun! I’ve never ran a standard pattern that fast before, and he’s a 4 year old – it’s hard to explain how that feels.” Walker typically takes him directly in to run, but she made the decision to react to how he felt before that run, and it paid off. “It’s probably because I was a little nervous, but he felt tight to me and he wanted to switch leads as I was going in so initially I thought I would lope him one time around and he’d pick up that lead and we’d flow in there. Well he kept switching his lead, but on that third time around there on the backside, I could feel him relax so I sent him.” The result: “Wow! I was really impressed with his run that day,” she said. Walker knew it was going to be fast, but it surprised her that it was that fast. “When I went back and looked at the video, I could see where he just never let up on that run. He had his ears up run- ning to the barrels and he never faltered on the turns – he just kept pushing.” According to Walker, it felt as great as it looked. “As I went through the run, I just kept feeling him catching gears, and then he’d get his turn and go on – it was so fun! It felt awesome.” The Pink Buckle was an emotional win for Walker and her husband, Randy, who raised and trained French Goodbye. “We had a really emotional day as it all started sinking in,” she said. They cur- rently live in Pingree, Idaho, but she grew up in Pennsylvania and didn’t barrel race until she was in her 20’s and lived in Idaho. “In the early 90’s I started doing futurities. He rides the colts and helps me keep them exercised. It’s something my husband and I have always really enjoyed,” Walker explained. Randy is the director of nurses at a hospital and she worked in a recovery room, but they’re looking forward to the next chapter of life. “We’ve always worked full time, so we’re pretty excited because we’ll both be retired by January,” she said. They’re also excited about their decision to breed to The Good- bye Lane. “We saw some horses by him run in 2011 or 2012 and were really impressed. His colts outran everything by like 5 tenths – that’s what caught my eye. They can run! And I feel like he breeds that into every one of them,” Walker said. “They all have a really user friendly quality to them. Good minds and so much speed – we’ve never been sorry that we started breeding to him.” Among French Goodbye’s good qualities, Walker said that he is quieter than a lot of horses she’s ran, easy to handle, and fun. “He’s always been bright-eyed, willing, eager, and really nice,” she added. “He’s been gaining momentum through the year. All along I knew he had a lot of speed and talent, but they just come to it at different times. He’s started to show it to us and we’re just as delighted as can be with him,” she said. Walker calls French Goodbye “Winfield”, a nickname he got because of his natural self-confidence. “I have an uncle that was The Pink Buckle Continued on Page 6 TWO DASH TO FAME SI 96 FRENCH GOODBYE SUN FROST TWO FOOLS GOLD FRENCHMANS GUY 2014 PALOMINO GELDING FRENCHMANS LADY DASH TA FAME SI 113 BEDAUB ADASH SWIFT GOODBYE SI 110 LEINSTER HOUSE TB THE GOODBYE LANE SI 101 LANES LEINSTER SI 101 LANES STAR MISS DASH TA FAME SI 113 FIESTA ON THE FLY SI 95 RIDER:VAUNA WALKER; OWNER: DINO CHOUEST; BREEDER: RANDY OR VAUNA WALKER

a doctor in Anchorage, Alaska, and it was kind of a joke that he thought he was really special, and this colt has thought he was really special from day one. I have a picture of him when he was a little fat baby and he’s standing with his little tail stuck straight up, and he looked like that a lot of the time. He’s always had feel-good-itis,” she said with a laugh. On the dam side, French Goodbye is out of Two Fools Gold, a mare that they raised. That mare is by Frenchman’s Guy and out of a Dash Ta Fame mare that Walker ran in 2008. “She did really well. She was the leading 5 year old mare in the nation that year,” Walker said about Two Dash To Fame. Following their big weekend at the Pink Buckle, the Walker’s made the 28 hour drive from Oklahoma back to Idaho. They stop and stay with friends to break up the trip into three days to make it easier on the horses. Thankfully, French Goodbye travels well. “He never stops drinking or eating. He can actually gain weight on a trip,” Walker said laughing. All the miles gave her plenty of time to reflect on being the very first champion of the Pink Buckle Futurity and Open. “It went so well, it just felt amazing to us. We’re so glad that we entered everything,” Walker said. She won a long list of great prizes including the Fast Time saddle, futurity saddle, and open saddle. “They are beautiful saddles and they had saddle racks with them. There was a beautiful pair of spurs, custom-made knives, custom-made hats, custom-made boots, Yeti coolers – the prizes were just incredible,” she said gratefully. The futurity champion also won a year’s use of a trailer, but as they split up the prizes the best they could, it went to Texas with French Goodbye’s owner, Chouest. Ironically, French Goodbye just won a year’s use of a trailer a couple weeks ago. “They had a trifecta on Gillette, Copper Springs, and Walla Walla futurities and he won that. So it’s his second trailer in a month,” Walker said as she talked about the impressive futurity prizes. “That Pink Buckle was one of the most fun times I’ve had at a futurity. We were so impressed! Of course it’s the first year they’ve done it, and honestly I didn’t see anything that wasn’t smooth. They did such a great job putting it on. It far exceeded any of my expec-tations,” Walker added. Although Chouest purchased French Goodbye a few months ago, Walker will continue to run him this year. “I thought that was great judgement because sometimes if you switch those colts when they’re that new to it and young, it’s hard for them. So they wanted me to finish running him this year, and they’ve been great to work with.” Walker will run him at the Western States Futurity in Ogden, Utah this weekend, then he’ll get a few days off before he continues getting exercised and conditioned. “In November, we’ll run him a couple times at jackpots and then he’ll be ready to rock and roll at the BFA,” Walker said. Eventually Chouest’ daughter, Allie, who turned 18 years old in July, plans to rodeo on French Goodbye. Walker also has babies by Slick By Design and Blazin Jetolena, and looks forward to all the opportunities to come. “I feel like it’s such a privilege to ride these horses. They’re so talented and they’re getting better and better all the time. And it’s so much fun to ride them.” According to the Pink Buckle website, their purpose is to move the barrel racing industry forward by dramatically increasing the number and quality of barrel racing performance horses sired by Pink Buckle Stallions. Only horses sired by Pink Buckle Stallions are eligible to be nominated and enter the Pink Buckle Barrel Race Open 4D or Futurity. There was also an Amateur Futurity side-pot with a guaranteed payout of $50,000. Slingshot Lane, also sired by The Goodbye Lane, is owned by Mark and Linda Jarvis, and was ridden by Marcie Wilson to the Amateur Futurity Average Championship after winning the first go and placing 3rd in the second go. All totaled, including the breeders and stallion owner winnings, Slingshot Lane won $12,876 in the Amateur Futurity. The Youth Incentive provided a great opportunity for ages 14

and under with a $20,000 guaranteed payout with no extra fees. It was a clean sweep for VF Mr Ed, sired by Eddie Stinson, owned by Travis and Johnna Dobbs, and ridden by Dylan Dobbs. They won the Youth first and second rounds and the average to earn $5100.

I’ll either ride him early in the morning, or sometimes we take him to roping practice in the evening and I’ll follow steers to the catch pen and stuff like that. By Tanya Randall Alan Woodbury’s wickedly fast Rosas Cantina CC had a stellar Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo to help Lisa Lockhart come from be-hind to win the year-end circuit title. It was the first time, in a long time, that she left the short-course master—the great An Oakie With Cash (“Louie”) at home. “It was just one run at a time,” said the two-time WPRA Reserve World Champion from Oelrichs, South Dakota. “I’m not going to lie; I was nervous. I was thinking I needed my head examined, but you know, you’ve just got to do it. I just thought it would be a good test. It was very hard to leave Louie at home though, very hard. When I got there, I was like ‘What have a I done?’ but there was no looking back.” Lockhart entered the four-run BCFR, hosted by Minot’s Y’s Men at the North Dakota State Fair Center in Minot, fifth in the circuit standings with $15,702, thanks to the efforts of Rosa, Louie and her younger horse Prime Diamond (“Cutter”). Fellow Dakota NFR-qualifier Jessica Routier, the defending circuit champion, was in the lead. “It was a tough race,” said Lockhart. “Girls were laying down some runs. And, really for that small of pen, there weren’t that many tipped barrels. It’s straight to the first barrel and not very wide. It’s a tough pen When Lockhart and Rosa jumped up and won the first round in 13.94, the stage was set for a race that would come down to the wire. Routier and Fiery Miss West (“Missy”), owned and bred by Gary Westergren, won the second round in 13.83, but Lockhart and Rosa came back to top the third in 13.64. The ladies traded places again in the fourth and final round, with Lockhart and Rosa’s 13.59 right behind Routier and Missy’s 13.53. “To me I feel like I climbed Mount Everest this weekend,” said Lockhart, who pocketed $9,174. “I was so worried about the first run. It wasn’t the fastest run, but she felt amazing. It did get harder each run, but I commend her for getting it done. The second run was tough and we about didn’t get it done, but we did. It just been constant figuring out what works, changing my riding to what works best for her. I’ve tried a lot of things.” Unlike Louie, whom Lockhart could probably ride with her eyes closed, Rosa can be a little challenging for the 12-time NFR quali-fier. The royally-bred 8-year-old buckskin mare, by leading race-horse sire Corona Cartel out of the NFR qualifying mare Dash Ta Vanila, a daughter of Dash Ta Fame out of the one of the all-time leading futurity horses SX Frenchmans Vanila, by Frenchmans Guy, has been with Lockhart almost three years. “It’s a slow process,” she said. “You are either forced to do something like this or you gradually phase it in. It’s hard to force yourself to phase it in. I should give my little Prime Talent horse more opportunities, but it’s just hard. There is just so much invested in where you go and when you go that it’s hard to think about not taking your best chance. That’s what it comes down to—taking your best chance.” Lockhart said there were a lot of “peaks and valleys” along the way, but things have seemed to come together over the past year. “Everything is coming together—the maturity, the consistency in my riding—to make her more consistent to achieve what we are,” she said. “I’m just continually trying to get that bond with her. She’s a unique individual.” Routier, who finished second in the average and second in the year-end standings, will be joining Lockhart at the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Florida. “We had four good runs,” said Routier, who placed in all but the first round. “The first round was my fault. The blind first barrel kind of blows my mind and I kind of think I need to help my horse

more than I need to. I almost ran her right into it, so we had to de-tour around it to not run it over. So, we were a little slower the first round, but she came back and made three really nice runs. I was just glad we didn’t run it over the first round.” Like Lockhart, Routier is headed to Las Vegas this December. The NFR qualification actually came a year earlier than anticipated. “We never forced it,” she said. “The plan last year was to season her at some rodeos, but she did amazing and went on to win the (Badlands) circuit. This year, we were going to go outside the circuit and see how it went and hopefully maybe get in the Top 30 to get into the bigger winter rodeos, but things kept going in our favor. We just ran with it.” The Buffalo, South Dakota, barrel horse trainer and mother

I just feel like it has taken twice as many people than it should to make this happen. There are so many people who have helped out in so many different ways.” Both Lockhart and Routier wanted to thank Minot Y’s Mens for putting on such a fabulous circuit finals. “It’s fun when it’s exciting and champions aren’t determined until the very last in several events,” Lockhart said. “I commend our committee for putting on an amazing rodeo and putting up the prize money that they do for the contestants. That’s huge. It was a great weekend.” “The Minot Y’s Mens put on such a great rodeo,” added Routier, whose daughter Payton trick rode during all four performances. “They’re so good to us. I love going there.”

By Tanya Randall 2017 WPRA World Champion Nellie Miller and Rafter W Min-nie Reba swept the California Circuit, winning the year-end title as well as the Circuit Finals Rodeo, held in Lancaster. Miller and Sister picked up $7,960 for the victory. “It was really good,” said Miller, who hails from Cottonwood, California. “It’s always nice to get a great start for next year. It ended up going a lot better than last year, so I was happy about that. It was just a fun weekend.” After qualifying to and competing at the Wrangler Tour Finale in Puyallup, Washington, Miller and Sister returned home to rest up for their second straight National Finals Rodeo appearance. With just a jackpot under their belt from the weekend prior, Miller and Sister shook off the rust, winning the first round in 17.52. They were third in the second round behind Tonia Forsberg’s victorious 17.67. In the third round, the defending world champions turned in the fastest time of the circuit finals, a 17.31, to seal up the average. “Our first run felt really good,” said the mother of two. “I was a little concerned because I haven’t ran her in a while. I tried to be pretty aggressive and make sure she was running pretty hard. The second run was really solid. The third round was an afternoon perf and I think the ground kept getting better and better. She got a little faster the last round. She just felt really solid.” Fittingly, it was the 2016 California Circuit Finals that propelled Miller and Sister to the national stage. The homebred 10-year-old mare, by KS Cash N Fame out of Espuela Roan, by Blue Light Ike, made her rodeo debut with Miller over the Fourth of July in 2015. In 2016, they tested the waters, finished in the Top 20 in the WPRA World Standings and won the California Circuit Finals Ro-deo. With those earnings, plus those of the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo, counting toward the 2017 season, Miller and Sister were able to use that momentum to qualify for the 2017 NFR and ultimately win the World Championship.

The 2017 California Circuit Finals didn’t go as well as those in 2016, but Miller still claimed the year-end championship. And while she was qualified to go the RAM in Kissimmee, Florida, she opted to return home and not miss her good circuit rodeos for 2018. Miller said she’s not sure if she’ll go back to the RAM or not. It largely depends on the schedule, and it’s said to be earlier in 2019.“We’ll just have to see. I’m not going to miss Houston for it, that’s for sure,” said the defending Rodeo Houston champion.

By Tanya Randall Turquoise Circuit Rookie Champion Leia Pluemer of Bosque Farms, New Mexico, claimed her first circuit finals rodeo cham-pionship in Prescott Valley, Arizona. Pluemer and her gritty mare Famous French Bug (“Sister”) picked up $6,284 for the champion-ship and finished second in the year-end standings to now two-time Turquoise Circuit Champion Lori Todd of Wilcox, Arizona. “It was a cool rodeo,” said Pluemer, who wanted to thank her family and her sponsors for their support. “All my family and friends got to hang out and watch it.” Pluemer and Sister were extremely consistent, placing in all three rounds with runs of 15.55, 15.34 and 15.34. They won the second round and finished third in the two other rounds. “They were just smooth,” said Pluemer of her runs. “They weren’t really correct because she prefers running outdoors. Run-ning in an indoor pen is a pretty big adjustment for her. The run to the first was pretty short. I knew that she’s a horse that doesn’t hit barrels so I just had to have three clean runs. She likes to run so I knew she would clock.” Pluemer partnered with Sister, a 9-year-old daughter of French-mans Fabulous out of the Dash Ta Fame mare Cricketts Fame, two years ago when she bought her from her breeder Frankie Drul-linger. “She had been to a couple of barrels races but never at a rodeo,” explained Pluemer. “I took her and ran her at a bunch amateur and college rodeos to get her seasoned to handle the pro rodeos.” Pluemer, who has a degree in communications and minor in public health from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, finished the season second in the WPRA Rookie Race and 34th in the WPRA World Standings with $39,940. She hopes to make a run at the NFR in 2019.

“I’d like to try to make the NFR,” she said. “I’ll hit a lot of ro-deos this spring and hopefully do well.” Todd also hopes to be on the NFR trail in 2019. She finished the 2018 season 33rd in the World Standings with $42,216 of that total, $18,036 came from her home circuit. Thanks to the Turquoise Circuit Finals, she has $3,815 in the bank for her 2019 run from finishing second in the average.
