What is Swan?
Swan is a web-based tool that Daimler and Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) utilize for our data exchanges with suppliers and external partners. It is accessed via a web browser and internet connection and requires an account and password. Essentially the tool is a secure file transfer protocol system. The sender attaches files to an “Outgoing Job” and the job is securely transferred to the recipient in a “Incoming Job” which the recipient can then download to their local file system.
It is the policy of all Daimler business units, including Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA), that Engineering Product Data (such as CAD files, plot images, etc) shall be transmitted using the Swan data exchange system. Engineering data should not be transmitted using unsecured methods such as e-mail, Dropbox, ftp, etc.
Swan has been developed specifically for use by Daimler companies and suppliers worldwide and it is the only approved method for sending Engineering Product Data. Swan may also be used to send or receive other types of data (MS Office files, etc) when secure point-to-point communication is necessary.

How big is Swan?
Swan is a global system. There are multiple sites that serve the regions in which they are located. The reason for multiple sites is to increase performance. If you do work with DTNA or it's North American affiliates under the Daimler umbrella you would most likely utilize DTNA’s version of Swan. DTNA Swan serves North America, Canada, and Central America. Other regions have their own Swan systems as well as internal employee and external supplier accounts. If a supplier has offices in Europeand America, a user could have multiple accounts to service these regions. This is mainly due to security but there are three important items to remember regarding these servers.
1. Security – Suppliers are not allowed to see/address jobs to other regional Swan servers.
2. Modeling Standards – DTNA and Daimler standards do differ.
3. Supplier to Supplier Connections– Suppliers are not allowed to exchange data to other supplier accounts. A Daimler/DTNA representative shall always be “the middle man".

How do I get a Swan account?
To receive an account within Swan, please contact your DTNA/Daimler Engineering or Procurement representative. They will validate your requirement and request the account on your behalf. When requesting an account please provide your representative with your companies preferred CAD format.
Please be aware of our limitations with translations (see Supported Formats Page).
DTNA Swan is not currently enrolled or available from the “Covisint" or Daimler portal site. That site is primarily for Daimler AG Suppliers using Daimler Swan located in Europe.

Supported Formats
Your Swan account is setup with one of two “departments” which determine your preferred format for CAD data. You should have been asked or provided this information to a DTNA representative at some point.
1. “Native NX” – As of June 2014, we have transitioned from CATIA V5 to Siemens NX. If data is originally mastered in
CATIA, a JT will replace the CATIA format. If you would prefer your desired format to be NX, please email our support
line ([email protected]).
2. “Translation” STEP/DXF – 3D data is STEP, 2D data is DXF.
Other formats to expect -
JT – JT is a lightweight visualization file and is a replacement for CATIA data when sending the NX format. This format was
developed by Siemens with the intention to replace the STEP, IGES file format. Daimler is utilizing this format as their
"neutral format" to replace STEP. Advances in the JT format will allow direct manufacturing information (PMI).
Office Documents – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Etc. These are typically available to send in their native formats.
Released Images – These are released images from the CAD Drawing and are used for procurement, quoting, etc.
CGM – Typical 2D drawing "images" of released drawings.
TIFF – Daimler/DTNA new standard for 2D drawing “images” of released drawings

Two mystery STEP files? What are they for?
A typical job send from our internal PDM system will include two STEP files. These are usually mistaken as corrupt files. Actually, these files contain Meta data about the data being sent (structure, Release status, description, etc).
The files themselves always start with a naming convention of SAxxxxx. They contain no geometry. They are utilized more in Germany with the “SamLight” program included with the NX Supplier Package. DTNA does not utilize this process at the time.
Ignore these two.
Regular STEP FileNote that the file ARR00000000.stp is usually a “top level” collector.

Receiving Zip/Tar files
Some data will be received as a TAR, ZIP, or 7z file (Compressed file format). The recipient needs to extract this data from the compressed file.
There are many compression archive managers available for download such as
7-Zip (http://7zip.org)
WinZip (http://WinZip.com)

Further assistance
• Info – Launch a separate window to the DTNA Supplier Page
• Help – Detailed Swan document (mainly German-based processes but detailed Swan usage).
• Questions? contact [email protected] for any additional assistance regarding Swan.
Daimler Trucks cannot provide CAD technical support for our suppliers. If you are having trouble reading CAD data Daimler Trucks will attempt to verify that the data is valid (which we define as being able to read it back into our systems). Beyond that, we can provide little or no help. We recommend you contact your helpdesk (or customer support for your CAD system) for further assistance.
