Mayor Toni Harp Speaks at Spring Graduation

program
On June 20th, 55 registered walkers took time out of their busy schedules to help support the KHAIR program at the
second annual Walk for KHAIR. Twelve teams raised over $4,500 to help support the KHAIR program. Donations came
from as far as Tampa, Florida; Allentown, Pennsylvania; and right here in Connecticut.
KHAIR (pronounced “care”) serves at-risk youth by offering one-on-one mentoring relationships and a range of work-
shops designed to teach important life skills and bolster self-esteem. In addition, KHAIR partners with local hair stylists
and barbers who provide free, complementary hair service appointments and serve as mentors and role models for
participants. With workshops held in the Winter, Spring,
Summer, and Fall, forty-nine teenagers completed the requirements of the KHAIR program in 2015.
On May 16, 2015, our spring season participants graduated from the KHAIR program. Families and friends gathered
at the NHFPL (The Ives Main Branch) to congratulate twelve young people on their impressive accomplishment. The
theme of the graduation was “Putting the Pieces Together.” All
participants received a gift card to the Gap, and five participants received a perfect attendance award which included a
gift card from Ashley’s Ice Cream.
It was an honor and a privilege to have Toni Harp, Mayor of New Haven, as our guest speaker. Mayor Harp encouraged
participants to be persistent and pursue their dreams. As she congratulated each individual on completing the KHAIR
program, she closed with a reminder that each person has a purpose and it is up to that person to find and fulfill that
purpose. Her words of inspiration set the tone for the participants as they left the program and set out to apply what they
have learned.

Family Day in Meriden
Cooking Matters continues to bring cooking classes to children, teens, and adults across Connecticut. It is incredible to see the positive impact that these classes have on the lives of kids and adults alike. Last year we saw firsthand just how excited the kids are to show their loved ones the new discoveries they make in the kitchen. Our Cooking Matters youth have become some of our best ambassadors for healthy cooking.
Children ages six to nine from the John Barry School enrolled in our six-week cooking program. During the program, the kids were taught a variety of healthy snack recipes and took part in taste-testing activities. They were also taught how to hold a knife, how to measure ingredients, and all about the five food groups.
The kids shared what they had learned during the final event at Family Day in Meriden, which was the cul-mination of this particular program. In one activity, five boys—Darren, Alex, Gerald, Jayvon, and Franklin—eagerly showed family members a few of their favorite recipes and talked about what they had learned in class. Darren said that his favorite recipe was the yogurt parfait. “We actually learned how to use the 5 food groups in this one recipe, and you wouldn’t believe one of the ingredients we used- carrots!”
The boys participated in a demonstration on how to prepare a smoothie and a yogurt dip with fruit by taking turns measuring out and stirring the ingredients. Our youth participants were very excited to share what they had learned in the six-week Cooking Matters program with their families and it was amazing to watch them in action.

In October 2015, Cooking Matters Connecticut held its first online fundraiser in honor of
Cooking Matters Connecticut month at CHNCT Foundation. The “Set The Table” challenge
was created to raise money to directly impact the lives of the many people in need who
benefit from learning how to prepare healthy, tasty meals on a limited budget through
Cooking Matters. The online challenge contained virtual place settings with corresponding
donation levels. The goal was to set our Cooking Matters Connecticut Table. All told, the
fundraiser brought in over $500 to support future classes and materials.

In 2015, A Modern Tea: Turning over a new leaf for better health took place at the New Haven Country Club in Hamden, Connecticut. This annual event was designed to raise awareness and promote positive health and lifestyle behaviors. This year the event was attended by many guests from the greater New Haven community. Health exhibi-tors provided our guests with important health information and free, on-site health assessments. Exhibitors included the Yale-New Haven Hospital Women’s Heart and Vascular Program, and the Community Health Network of Connecticut, Inc. Intensive Care Management Sickle Cell Pro-gram. Guests attended healthy living workshops
presented by our invited speakers. The workshops included:
· “10 Superfoods for Anti-Aging”
· “What’s Stress REALLY Got To Do With It!”
· “Tea Tasting: Turning over a new leaf”
The workshops covered the many ways to incor-porate superfoods into your diet to improve energy, how stress can affect many aspects of health, and the different kinds of teas that may help prevent blood clots, atherosclerosis, and certain cancers.
Sponsors included: The message behind the 2015 A Modern Tea event was to
encourage guests to remain active in their quest for wellness. The annual
event draws approximately 200 women and men from across Connecticut.
