    Simon De La Rosa Floreswas descended from a

    family of artisans originally

    from Balayan, Batangas.

    Uncle Pio De La Rosa taught

    Simon the rudiments of thearts when he was in his

    teens.

    Later, he enrolled at the

    Academia de Dibujo y

    Pintura, studying underLorenzo Guerrero and

    Lorenzo Rocha.

    Simon Flores is known for histender renderings of religious

    images that were commissionedby wealthy families and evenparish churches and convents ofLuzons central plains.

    In his version of the grievingMother, Flores portrays her with

    a long, wavy hair against a darkblue and white tunic. With bothhands clasped close to her heartto depict grief, the facialexpression appears verysubdued and refined. Six cherub

    heads, accompany the Mother inher time of sorrow.

    One of Simon Flores earlypaintings, this informal portrait

    of a lady is set inside herbedroom. She stands in front ofher dresser drawer and isreflected through the mirror.Already dressed in barotsaya,or blouse and skirt, with a

    striking blue tapis or overskirtatop a red and white stripedskirt, she is probably groomingherself for an important affair.On top of her drawer arepersonal accessories--

    apeineta or decorative comb, afolding fan and a prayer book.

    In this religious painting ofthe Madonna-and-Child,

    Simon Flores demonstrateshis nuanced representationof the Christ Child sleepingon an elegantly drapedwhite blanket. Garbed in abright red cloak, Maryclasps her hands whileadoring her sleeping Child.Both figures are markedwith transparent halos,indicating their high status

    in the Catholic hierarchy.
