Recently we marked the tenth anniversary of the September 11th at-tacks on our great city and country. Undoubtedly, we all rememberhow we felt in the days, weeks and months following the horrificevents of that day. As we have reflected on the ten years that havepassed, we’ve had a chance to hear the stories of the countless actsof bravery and sacrifice that occurred which resulted in hundreds oflives being saved. For many, it was and remains a source of inspirationwhich was felt then and for many it is rekindled now.The High Holidays serve as a source of inspiration for many. During

the holidays, we are inspired to give generously to our respective syn-agogues and to help those in need. We may give financially, or shareour time, by volunteering to assist others who are less fortunate. TheJCC is no exception and for those who are familiar with our programsand services, they are aware of the importance of giving generouslyto the JCC. Our members are a source of inspiration as they gra-ciously give of their time and money which allows us to continue toserve those in need within the Staten Island community. Sometimes our members are inspired to give because of a staff per-

son who provided exemplary services or went above and beyond theirregular duties to add a special touch to someone’s life. Recently a newfamily to the JCC was inspired by the service and care they and theirchild received in our Day Care program. It spurred the family to makea first-time contribution of $500 to the JCC in honor of a particularstaff member, recognizing her hard work.We hope that the work of the JCC provides a source of inspiration

and that you will consider a gift to help support our many programsand services. There are 30,000 individuals in our community benefit-ing from these programs, and each of them look to the JCC everydayfor inspiration and hope. There are a number of ways to give to the JCC including our Tribute

Program, sponsoring an event or program, planned giving, starting ascholarship or fund in a family member’s name or adding your nameto our list of donors, located in our lobby. We would be proud to addyour name to our Jerusalem stone wall.

Please contact Kevin Brosnick, Director of Individual Giving, at718.475.5256 or [email protected] to donate or if you have anyquestions.

Did You Know. . . .

The JCC provides after school programming to approximately 500 youth Monday through Friday at six different venues includingtwo JCC sites, three public schools and one NYCHA (New York City Housing Authority) Center. Focusing on academics as well ashealth and wellness, youth between the ages of five and seventeen receive a healthy snack, assistance with their homework andspecial school projects, small group tutoring and the opportunity to choose from various recreational activities. Dependent onlocation, participants go swimming, play basketball, dance, work on solar cars, keep journals, cook, explore new hobbies and somuch more.

Our agency prides itself on the thousands of children who we have helped to succeed by keeping them in a safe and nurturingenvironment while also enabling their parents to become and/or remain fiscally responsible for their families. Leaving their homesvery early in the day and not returning until dinner time can be exhausting and difficult for both children and parents. The JCCdoes its best to make a challenging situation a more pleasant one by filling the childrens’ afternoons with fun activities and warm, friendly and supportive staff.

If you would like more information about these programs, please contact Kevin Brosnick at 718.475.5256 or [email protected].

They were given tools to advocate for Israel. The teensvisited the Simon Wiesenthal Tolerance Center in Manhattan for aneducational workshop on “tolerance”. Global Jewish Connections Teen Tri-partnership Meets in Staten Islandally, as part of the visit, the teens watched a short film on the Holo-caust. The most impactful part of the visit was a meeting with Clara,a Holocaust survivor who shared with the teens her experiences dur-ing the Holocaust. One of the most poignant moments was when Clarashared with the teens that their presence - 40 Jewish teens, full oflife and compassion - was a great inspiration to her. The teens also

visited residents ofGolden Gate NursingHome and led educa-tional sessions for oneanother on topics rang-ing from Jewish identityto the fence in Israelthat separates Israelfrom the Palestinians. The teens enjoyed someof the best destinationsin the New York metro-politan area includingtrips to Six Flags GreatAdventure, a ride on theStaten Island Ferry andNew York subway sys-tem, Central Park, aNew York Yankees

game, Times Square, and the Broadway Show Billy Elliott. Most importantly, though, the teens developed intensive bonds withone another that are sure to remain strong despite living thousandsof miles from one another. They came to understand that we arethree communities bound together by a common destiny that shareone heart.

Fit Pro’s Q & ADear Fit Pro’s: How to you get motivated to work out? I need to light a fireunder me in order to even get my gym bag packed.

Signed,Light My Fire in Staten Island

Dear Light, For some it’s the right music to get you going. For others it’s putting on acertain outfit and it doesn’t quite fit anymore. Regardless of what it is,here are some solutions to make it stick:• Write the steps to achieve the goals: Writing goals is great, but be specificas to how you’ll get there. “I will eat a vegetable with every meal and fruitswith each snack”. The more specific-the better. • Change your routine: keep it interesting. No one likes to be stuck in a rutwith the same old routine. Try unique foods and recipes. Try different ex-ercises, intensities, walking paths, etc.• Train with a friend: maybe it’s a group of like minded women; like in ourGroup Ex classes or maybe it’s you and your spouse. Accountability works. • Take a picture: there is nothing more telling (and motivating) than a pic-ture of yourself. Put it where you can see it daily to keep you pluggingaway.

Sports/ Rec programs will provide asafe environment that will encourage exercise, socializations and fun. It has been proven thatteam sports help some children with autism towards increasing their patience, reduce tempertantrums, and enhance social skills, physical coordination, as well as focus and attention.Swimming/Water Safety Ages 6 - 12Basic swimming skills are so important for all children but especially for children who are lessaware of their surroundings. Swimming can aid children with emotional, behavioral, sensory, and communication disorders. It also improves muscle development, coordination, relaxation, and building self-esteem. We will work on skills such as dressing independently, transferringsafely to pool area, kickboard drills, submerging and breathing techniques as well as using poolgames to encourage socialization and appropriate play.Yoga/Movement Ages 6 - 12Yoga offers a structured, focused activity that doesn’t have a judgmental right/wrong compo-nent. The students will always see themselves as successful and will find their favorite positions.Yoga can address problems of heightened anxiety, poor motor coordination and strength, andweak self-regulation for children with autism spectrum disorders. The aim of the yoga programis to help autistic children learn to cope and connect with each other. It helps individuals byaiding in stress reduction, reducing anxiety, increasing body awareness, strength and flexibility, and increasing self-regulation. Learning to self-regulate will benefit children at home, at schooland out in the public. Classes may include music, dance, rhymes and stories.Basketball Ages 6 - 12All players need to work on individual skills as well as team-building skills for this sport. Therewill be timed stations where the children will work on their attention and focus, independent transitions to all stations, and basic skills, such as chest pass, bounce pass and defensive stance. We will use relay games to encourage team-building skills and an understanding that they area part of a whole. We will incorporate skills most ASD kids need to address, such as turn taking, keeping hands to self, cooperative play, communicating appropriately with peers, staying ontask, exhibiting good sportsmanship, putting forth best effort and following teacher’s verbal/visual directions.Starts Sunday, October 27 and Wednesday, November 2 Basketball Sundays, 10-11am $129M/$149NM Yoga Sundays, 11am-12noon $129M/$149NM Swimming Wednesdays, 4:30-6pm $139M/$159NM

Shoot for Success- Gerry MosleyGerry Mosley is a basketball instructor and life coach to many youth onStaten Island. Gerry followed the tradition of excellence his mother andfather developed and became the first athlete of the College of StatenIsland to complete a 4-year sports program. The Children’s Aid Society,Special Olympics, Challenged Adults, Unity Games, School Safety andthe Parks Department are only some of the organizations he provideshis services to. The call to help young people with disabilities and otherproblems extends through the entire Mosley family. Gerry is considereda “World Changer” to those close to him. He has a unique gift of beingable to see the winner in every child and young adult. In 1997 Gerry started “Shoot for Success L.T.D.” as a traveling coach

teaching the fundamentals of basketball. By teaching the principles ofconfidence, high morals and ethics balancing your life and the impor-tance of education and honor, he is able to mold young boys and girlsinto young adults striving to reach their goals and dreams. “Shoot forSuccess N.P.O.” is Gerry’s most recent venture where no child is leftout. It is a community outreach for Island excellence by providing edu-cation through sports. This will allow athletes of all ages from aroundthe Island to train with and learn from their peers. Mr. Mosley alwaysstresses the importance of “being your best”.“Shoot for Success” aims for excellence through life coaching in the

environment of basketball. Children encouraging and coaching otherchildren leads to adults who help adults change the world for the better.Children need a mentor to provide them with guidance not only in bas-ketball but more importantly, life. Gerry says that some kids need tobe pointed in the right direction. Some kids need to be pushed in theright direction and some kids need to be taken by the hand and pulledin the in the right direction.
