SIRIS Volunteer Profi le: Karen Hippensteel

Meet Karen Hippensteel of

Murphysboro, Illinois, who has been

volunteering for the Southern Illinois

Radio Information Service (SIRIS)

for the past two years. When she’s

not busy managing her own vineyard,

participating in church activities,

traveling with her husband, Tom,

or spending quality time with her

three children and 15 grandchildren,

Hippensteel can be found at SIRIS

helping people stay informed with

local and national news.

“I enjoy reading, and SIRIS appealed to

me because I was able to give back to

the community by reading the news

over the air,” Hippensteel says. “There

is a defi nite need in the community for

people with special needs to keep up

with the news, and SIRIS provides them

with this service in their own homes.”

Hippensteel learned about SIRIS from

her husband, a member of the local

Lion’s Club, who brought home a

notice about SIRIS after a club meeting.

She was pleased to learn how easy it

would be for her to volunteer.

“SIRIS provides fl exibility of days and

hours,” she says, which is important

to someone as busy as Hippensteel,

who along with her husband manages

Hippenhoff Vineyard on Kite Hill Road

in rural Carbondale. The vineyard grows

grapes for Chambourcin, Traminette,

and other wines for the region’s

growing wine industry. “It’s great that

I can give back to the community

through SIRIS while also maintaining

our business,” she says.

Hippensteel values the programming

that WSIU provides to viewers and

listeners and believes it deserves

continuing fi nancial support. “I

especially enjoy listening to the news

and classical music on WSIU Radio,

and WSIU TV’s music specials and

symphony concerts,” she says.

Learn how you can give back to your

community as a SIRIS volunteer by

calling (618) 453-2808 or clicking on

the SIRIS tab online at wsiu.org.

Cleaning out your closets? You

can support a good cause by

donating your old records, DVDs,

CDs, cassettes, VHS tapes, and

working stereo equipment to the

SIRIS Classic Vinyl & Media Sale,

coming to the University Mall in

Carbondale, next to Hot Topic, on

Saturday, September 12 from

8am to 7pm.

Last year’s sale raised nearly

$4,000 to help fund SIRIS’s daily

readings of newspapers and books

for individuals who are visually

impaired, as well as the purchase

of special radios that allow users to

listen via a closed-circuit sideband

channel of WSIU Radio.

Item donations are being accepted

through August 28 at two locations:

at a table near the Information

Desk at the University Mall and

at the SIU Credit Union at 2809

Outer Drive in Marion. Volunteers

are needed for this year’s sale!

To get involved, contact Vickie

Devenport at (618) 453-6148 or

[email protected].

Celebrating Our

National Parks

To highlight the upcoming premiere

of the new Ken Burns TV series The

National Parks: America’s Best Idea,

WSIU is hosting a variety of activities

focusing on our region’s connection

to the National Park Service, the

National Trails System, and the

National Historic Trail of Tears.

This month, WSIU TV and Calico

Country Sew & Vac are hosting a

community quilting event in which

each participant will create a quilt

block portraying a personal vacation

photo, memory, or feeling about

America’s national parks. Two

sessions will be hosted on Saturday,

August 29 from 10am-1pm

or 2-5pm at Calico Country’s

Carbondale and West Frankfort

locations. Pre-registration is required.

For details, contact Calico Country at

(618) 529-5665 or (618) 932-2992.

Public broadcasting has something for everyone. For Lauren Roberts, a graduate student at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, WSIU is her primary news source. “NPR is just about always on in my car,” she says, “so I listen to a variety of programs, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Zorba Paster, and classical music.” Roberts, who received her Bachelor’s degree from SIUC and is now pursuing a Master’s degree in the College of Mass Communication & Media Arts, says that WSIU Radio helps her make sense of current events. “I especially enjoy Morning Edition,” she says. “Renee Montagne and Steve Innskeep do a fantastic job of keeping me informed about what’s happening in the world.”
