ABOUT THE EXCHANGE

The alphabetical groups (A,B,C, etc) used in theseed list follow the outline provided in the SIGNASpecies Iris Study Manual published in 1972, e.g.sub-section Pogoniris, series Pumilae is under A,sub-section Pogoniris, series Interrnedeae in underB and so on. Both the Study Manual and The Iris byBrian Mathew are used as references when verifyingnames. In a few instances, names appear in the listwhich we were unable to verify, but are includedanyway.

DATES TO REMEMBER

We ask anyone donating seed to please mail allseeds by November 10. Overseas donors pleasemail all seeds by October 3 O. For later ripeningsee d please send a list of the late species and abrief description of each by the above dates, so theymay be included in the list. Late ripening seeddonations must be received no later thanDecember 30. Seeds received after these dateswill be used as extras or may be held for the followingseason's list.

As of Aprll,1996 the Seed Exchange willhave new Chairpersons. Send your 1996I.Il.U donations to:

Marty Schafer & Jan Sacks337 Acton StreetCarlisle. MA 01741 USA

The Seed Exchange Ust will be mailed out in mid-December. The first batch of orders are tabulated byJanuary 8 to learn of the popularity of each entry(about 80% of total orders are received within twoweeks of mailing). This enables us to divide up theamount of seeds that go into each seed packet, Le. ifwe have 100 seeds of a particular entry and already20 requests for it, there will only be 4 to 5 seeds perpacket. If there are only 4 requests for it, we mightplace 15 seeds in each packet. A group ofvolunteers convene during the second full week ofJanuary to divide up seeds equally, place them inseed packets and file them numerically in trays. Thegroup gathers again a week later to fill ordersreceived by January 8th. Orders must bepostmarked by March 1. Late orders will not beaccepted.

DONATING SEEDS

All seeds from members of the family Iridaceae arewelcome in the Exchange. Especially popular areseeds from hand-pollinations, wild collections orspecies that have not appeared in the Exchange fora year or two. Other than these, there are noparticular groups that are more popular than others. There are at least 5 requests each for 95% of thespecies seeds donated.

It would be very helpful if members could each try tohand-pollinate one or two of the species in theirgarden specifically for the Exchange. Handpollination assures that a particular species will cometrue from seed. As for quantity, 100 to 1000 seedsare. ideal, but any amount is welcome. Even if youonly have 1 packet of seeds to send, please do so --they will be greatly appreciated.

Most of us live near an area where irises grow wild.Since they grow nearby we consider them"common" and believe everyone else will as well. Not true! Wild collected seed is extremely popularand the best way to receive genetic diversity. If youknow an area where irises are growing wild, pleasemake a trip to collect from as many plants as possible.Even if it is a widespread species in the U.S., wehave many overseas members who would like togrow seeds of our natives. Overseas members:we'd like to grow seeds of your native species too!

Paper envelopes are the preferred method forpackaging seed although plastic bags are also usefulas long as the seeds are WELL-DRIED previous topaCkaging. Please do not use film canisters, smallboxes, etc. as they are impossible to organize.

Mark each envelope clearly and legibly with thecorrect name. If it is a named clone, please providethe species or hybrid group to which it belongs. If itis from hand pollination, mark it HP; if it is wildcollected write "wild collected" and give the town, county, state, country and elevation if known; if it isfrom plants growing in your garden that were wildcollected, write "ex.", then give the aboveinformation; if it is grown from seed received fromsomeone else or a seed exchange (SIGNA,BIS, ARGS), so indicate and give the year andnumber if known. Otherwise try to give a brief 2 to 4word description, especially if there are any uniquecharacteristics. Please include with each mailing alisting of all seed packets enclosed (preferably on an8 1/2" x 11" piece of paper). Be sure to include yourname and address on the list and on the mailing·package.

The SIGNA Seed Exchange is the main fundraiserfor SIGNA. The proceeds go toward the semi-annualpublication and mailing of our SIGNA Bulletin. Theyalso help to keep dues low and when funds permit, help to sponsor collecting trips, special publications, and research grants. Please support SIGNA bydonating seed in 1996.
