History Repeats Itself— Adding Old to New

The Power Inn Area has a long history of settlers, agriculture, townships and trades. Many of the streets are named for towns and families who once thrived in this area. For example, New Ramona Colony and Bright-en Township formed in the 1880s and have significant stories associated with the area’s development and evolution. The diversity of Power Inn PBID businesses continues to evolve, bringing unique shoppers to the

area and increased awareness of the products, services and innovative manu-factured goods available to the Sacramen-to region and beyond.

Long time Alliance member, Century Homestead, has evolved and transformed along with the economy by altering its list of products and services. Retitled Century Homestead Antiques and Collectibles, at

4580 Power Inn Road, it is one of three antiques stores located in what has been named the “Power Inn Antique Row.” Owners Terry Dennis and Dennis Cole, have teamed up with two additional local antique stores, the Red Lantern at 4100 Florin Perkins Rd. and Reimagining Estate Liqui-dations at 8230 Belvedere Ave. # C & D to bring timeless pieces to local homes, landscapes and businesses. While Century Homestead is mostly an antiques store, it continues to sell whole house fans manufactured by Triangle Engineering.

Terry Dennis believes, “Our two businesses are proving to be comple-mentary. As customers come in looking for a more economical way to cool their homes, they pick up a piece of Fenton Glass or a slot machine or a garden sculpture from our outside garden. Looking for antiques and old stuff with affordable prices - the Power Inn Antique Row should be a destination.”

The Power Inn antique locations are open Monday through Saturday with varying business hours.

Century Homestead’s eye-catching antique tractor is situated adjacent to Power Inn Rd.

The Alliance Board Adds Four More The Alliance Board of Directors, in a unanimous vote at the November 18th meeting, approved the addition of four new active PBID members:

Melissa Anguiano, City of Sacramento, Economic Development Dept.

Candy Holland, Davison Iron Works, Inc.

Mike Mattos, Sacramento Regional Transit District

Dennis Shanahan, Shanahan’s Auto Body & Paint/24-Hour Towing

Melissa Anguiano has been with the City Economic Development Dept. since August 2004. Her current position is Manager and she is an active member of The Alliance Planning and Business Development Committee. Her insights into local government have been valuable as the Power Inn PBID continues to strive for continued economic growth and new business development.

After graduating from University of Minnesota, Candy Holland moved to Aspen, CO to pursue a career as a recreational skier. When the snow melt-

ed she was hired as secretary at a local insurance agency and quickly be-gan a future selling property and casualty insurance for businesses.

She moved to California in 1977 with her family and in 1999 Candy went to work for her largest client—Davison Iron Works, Inc. She manages the

office, contacts, HR, insurance, billing and is the “Office Mom.” Additionally, she is an active member of The Alliance Crime and Code Committee and attends virtually all the

Crime and Dine events.

Mike Mattos is Chief of Facilities and Business Support Services for the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT). His responsibilities include safety, facilities, information technology, procure-ment and capital programs.

During Mike’s 36-year career, he worked as a mechanical and industrial engineer, safety and envi-ronmental department head, production manager and plant manager in the aerospace and min-ing industries. While employed with the U.S. Dept. of Defense, Mike brought laser ultrasonics from the lab into production, operated inspection reactors, managed major construction projects, automated warehouses and a work force of 450 employees. While serving as Plant Manager at

Noranda, he built the first completely automated metal recycling system – designed to recycle old computers, main-frames and copiers. After two tours in Vietnam, Mike attended Sacramento State on the G.I. Bill and holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering.

Dennis Shanahan is a Sacramento native. After graduating high school he attended and graduated from Skill Center Trade School and after a short stint as an apprentice carpen-

ter he opened S and Z Custom Car Color in 1976 at the age of 20 in downtown Sacra-mento. The business moved to the Power Inn corridor in 1979. After marrying Debbie Vanzile in 1980, also a Sacramento native, the two added towing services in 1986 and

changed the business name to Shanahan’s Auto Body and Towing. Debbie joined Dennis full-time and, as a team, outgrow three different locations until landing at their present

site at 6211 Power Inn Road.

Dennis is a self-proclaimed “motor head” and is interested in anything with wheels - cars, motorcycles and toys. As an avid outdoorsman he enjoys riding motorcycles and fishing in the summer and ski-ing in the winter and is a year-round avid road bicyclist. Good management at Shanahan’s has allowed Dennis time

to focus on the Power Inn area and actively participate in the Power Inn Alliance.

Be Alarmed...And Be Covered Against False Alarm Fees

Because clean and safe streets are one of the best things about Power Inn – consider an Adopt-A-Road sign to support the Clean Up Crew! Since 2007, Adopt-A-Road has removed from roadways:

2,550 Tires 1,172 Shopping Carts 600 Mattresses 1,286 Car Parts

980 Piles of Wood 250 Tons of debris….And so much more.

Adopt-A-Road signs are a unique way to show pride in this community and thousands of people a day notice businesses who sponsor a sign. Adopt-A-Road costs little, yet speaks volumes.

Quick Quack Car Wash is the newest Adopt-A-Road Sponsor. The new sign will début at the NW cor-ner of Power Inn Rd. and Folsom Blvd in January 2015.

Rewards for Reporting Illegal Dumping

How much is that kitty in the window? It could cost a few hundred dollars if he sneaks in, trips your alarm and the Police find it’s a false alarm. Sign up for The Alli-ance program - Security Patrol and Alarm Response (SPAR) and security patrol will respond to triggered alarms free of charge.*

Participants must have a permitted alarm with law enforcement. Visit PowerInn.org/SPAR or contact Dawn Carlson at (916) 453-8888 *Number of paid responses varies depending on membership

Illegal dumping is a chronic and expensive crime so the City and The Alliance are asking for the public's help in catching illegal dumpers.

Witnesses to illegal dumping must log or photograph important details: vehicle description license plate suspect description

Call 911 if dumping is *in progress* (From a cell phone - call 731-0100) To report suspicious activities - or dumping on city roadways - call 311 with the descriptive details.

Reporting parties are rewarded - $500 for a penalty citation, or $1000 for a conviction.....but it needs to be reported!

Members Have Benefits and Options

The Alliance provides resources for members and staff to get around, including Emergency Ride Home. All members who take alternative modes of transportation to work can get a ride to where they need to be - in cases of illness or emergencies. The Alliance also counsels on commuting options, a benefit for those who may be looking to take light rail, find a carpool partner or other means to get to work.

Logging miles can pay off! Log all trip miles (including errands) into Commuter Club and earn points for the online raffle. Logging trips also helps state and local transportation agencies determine most used methods of travel. It’s free and confidential to register with SacRegionCommuterClub.org.

Do something good and substitute one trip other than driving alone.
