Direct and Reported Speech

Newspaper reports often contain quotations from witnesses or experts.

When a reporter uses the exact words that a person has said, they use “quotation marks.” This is called direct speech.

Gloucester fan, Stuart Allen, said “I was at the match yesterday, you would never have realised he was seriously hurt. I’m devastated.”

When a reporter summarises something a person has said into their own words, they do not use quotation marks. This is called reported speech.

Brown’s doctor at the hospital confirmed that the cause of death was a ruptured kidney.
