Foreword

I am delighted that this year the Sichuan Summer Camp will provide an opportunity for University of Bradford students to gain an understanding of China through student exchange and internationalisation events for our students in China. The University is committed to developing international partnerships across the world, including with China, and we have developed very good connections with Sichuan University, which has in turn enabled this summer camp. I hope that there will be many more such events in the years to come. The University is delighted to support this event and make it a great success. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all who have been involved in setting up this event and I hope that the students will make the most of this opportunity.

Professor Brian Cantor VICE-CHANCELLOR UNIVERSITY OF BRADFORD

I am delighted to introduce you to the brochure for the first Sichuan-Bradford Summer School. In this brochure, the students from the University of Bradford who were successful in their applications to join the Summer School have said a little about themselves and described the academic departments in which they are studying in Bradford. I know that they are greatly looking forward to the opportunity to mix with students and faculty in Sichuan University and get to know the campus and this beautiful region of China. The Summer School has been made possible by the generosity of colleagues in Sichuan University and at the University of Bradford and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to them all for their support and the enthusiastic way in which they have approach the project. I very much hope that this will be the beginning of a strong and productive relationship between our two Universities.

The University of Bradford

The main campus situates the J.B Priestly library. It has 530,000 volumes, more than 1,100 printed periodical titles and approximately 6,000 electronic journals. In addition to the university library, there is also a Blackwell’s bookshop located on campus.

A recent development for students is the on-campus student accommodation called The Green. It has the highest BREEAM rating for any building with regards to sustainable development.

The university also provides on the campus sporting facilities, called Unique Gym, which includes a top-of-the-range fitness suite, indoor pool and a climbing wall. Many sports activites also occur in the external sports courts. The university has several buildings for the different faculties, such as: Richmond, Chesham, Horton, and the Institute of Cancer Therapeutics.

The university is also home to a student’s union with a building on campus. The union is in charge of sports, societies and most student related activities. The union has a shop and a radio station called RamAir and other entertainment facilities including a student newspaper and a student run cinema.

The Union also houses on campus bars including: the Amp Bar, Central Bar, Sports Bar, Biko room and Escape. Three bars combine to form Friday Night Disco (FND) every Friday which is a student club.

The University of Bradford is located in the city of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. In 1966 the university received its Royal Charter becoming the 40th university in Britain, but its origins date back to the early 19th century. The first chancellor of the university was former British Prime Minister Harold Wilson.

The Faculty of Life Sciences

There are a number of research facilities and laboratories to aid student learning in the Faculty, such a human patient simulator iStan, an eye clinic, a Visual Electrodiagnostic Testing Unit, a state-of-the-art aseptics suite and a bioimaging suite.

Students can choose to get involved in many prominent research areas, which are aided by on site research centers. For example, the Centre for Skin Sciences is one of the largest academic centers found in Britain for skin and hair follicles research.

The pictures show some of the equipment and facilities found in the Centre for Skin Sciences. Academics at the University of Bradford have contributed to world class ground-breaking research in skin and hair follicle. For example, Professor Randall and her team were able to show for the first time that an active ingredient in a glaucoma drug stimulates growth in human scalp hair follicles, and the study was published in The FASEB Journal (Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology Journal).

The Faculty has recently developed an Integrated Life Sciences Learning Centre which acts to enhance student learning through visual aids, especially providing an extensive anatomy and physiology resource through the Anatomage software.

The Faculty of Life Sciences covers a range of academic disciplines from archaeological sciences to the biomedical, clinical and pharmaceutical sciences. The courses are undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research.

Pharmacy

The pharmacy course at the University of Bradford is different to other courses in that it has a team-based learning approach. This means that we are given a reading pack to become familiar with before being tested on it and then complete application exercises based on the pack contents, in our teams. This way of learning is very useful for pharmacy as it ensures you are up to speed with the content, and also gives opportunities to help your peers and for them to help you. The approach is also an effective way to keep students engaged and involved in their work as opposed to lectures where students can be distracted or disengaged from what is being taught.

The University of Bradford is also unique in the fact that it offers a 5 year sandwich course, which incorporates two six month periods of pre-registration training into the 4th and 5th years of study, in contrast to just completing one year at the end of the four year course. At the University of Bradford we complete two days of community placement and one day hospital placement per year, and we are encouraged to seek work experience in addition to this, which is very helpful for students who don’t have much prior experience. There are a few core modules that develop understanding and ability in many areas of pharmacy, from writing of reflection to prescription processing.

Throughout our studies, we have discovered that pharmacy is a broad and challenging profession in which pharmacists are key members of the healthcare team in the community and hospitals. The role of the community pharmacist is becoming much broader and is allowing pharmacists to be much more involved with the public. This could be due to pharmacists having an ever more increasing role in advising patients on their health and not just dispensing patient’s drugs.

Abigail Bembridge

Hobbies and InterestsMy name is Abbie Bembridge and I study Pharmacy at the University of Bradford. I am 20 years old and have two sisters and three brothers. My sisters are both doctors and one of my brothers is an occupational therapist. My interest in medicine was piqued when I was 15 and started working in a local pharmacy, and having two sisters as doctors meant conversations tended to be dominated by medical terminology, which I was always interested to learn more about. My hobbies and interests vary and I enjoy sports.

Cheerleading: I am a flyer. This means that I am the person who is thrown in the air and caught (most of the time). So far I have only had one accident whilst cheerleading and so hope to continue this sport.

Netball: I play netball a few times a week. The position I play is centre, which means I do a lot of running around the court!

Walking my dogs: I often go on long walks with my dogs and family on an evening.

Badminton: I love to play badminton both socially and competitively.

CourseI chose to study pharmacy because it is intellectually stimulating and challenging, and due to the vast amount of medical research currently taking place, there is always more to learn. I have found the course demanding but extremely rewarding so far, and I look forward to expanding my knowledge further.

AmbitionsAfter graduating, I would love to work in hospital and prison pharmacy, as I find these settings the most exciting. I would also like to become a lecturer after I have decided what I will specialise in.

Umair Ashfaq

Hobbies and InterestsHi, my name is Umair Ashfaq and I am a second year Pharmacy student at the University of Bradford. I am 19 years old and was born and brought up in Rochdale, Greater Manchester. My interests include a range of sports from football to swimming. My other hobbies include playing snooker, listening to music, hanging out with friends and online gaming on my PS3. I also love travelling and seeing new places. In the past I have been an active volunteer for charities such as the Samaritans.

CourseI am on the 4 year Pharmacy programme consisting of 4 years at the university and 1 year pre-registration training. Pharmacy is a profession that works to ensure the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical drugs in order to treat and better people’s lives. Pharmacy is a challenging subject that includes all human bodily systems from cardiovascular to respiratory and urinary systems. At the same time, we are learning about the drugs that are used to treat the conditions that affect these systems. I enjoy pharmacy and I am very determined to succeed in this profession.

AmbitionsCurrently, I have not decided which field I would like to go into. However, I see advantages to both hospital pharmacy and community pharmacy. I have 2 more years to discover the field of pharmacy I would like to work in.

Biomedical Science

The degree focuses on training and refining students’ lab techniques across multiple disciplines. The disciplines include microbiology, biochemistry, haematology, immunology, pathology and human physiology. Each module includes its own unique set of practical skills with underlying fundamental basics across each module.

The degree is assessed via a variety of methods from lab practical coursework, lab reports and exams. Students in the second year and second semester must undertake a competency test that must be passed in order to progress into the third year. This is necessary because in the third year students choose their specialism which is based on

the disciplines and wide range of expertise of the academic staff. For example, students may undertake Cancer Biology as a specialism in which students will require the skills acquired from the competency assessment to safely and accurately work unsupervised in a laboratory towards the end of the degree.

BSc Biomedical Science graduates are especially well suited to undertake work within the National Health Service (NHS) as the course is compliant with the standards of the organisation. Many graduates have expanded their repertoires by entering other industries such as teaching, banking and embryology, whilst many others have undertaken postgraduate study.

From our past experience, biomedical science is a multi-disciplinary degree that offers a wide range of modules providing deep and extensive knowledge into each subject area. The University of Bradford’s biomedical science degree is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.

Katty Wadda

Hobbies and InterestsMy name is Katty Wadda. I am currently a 2nd year Biomedical Science student. I became interested in science at a young age and have pursued it since then. I enjoy reading classic literature, listening to music from all genres (except house music) and sports, especially badminton, netball and rounders. I recently started learning how to play the guitar. I enjoy doing a lot of voluntary work and was a treasurer for the Red Ribbon society, which raises funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS.

CourseBiomedical Science appealed to me for many reasons but primarily because I wanted to expose myself to a wide range of medical topics. The course provides the perfect balance between practical and theoretical knowledge, whilst also giving the opportunity to expand knowledge on individual favourite topics. Two of my favourite modules are genetics and biochemistry; this is because biochemistry is the foundation of all the biochemical pathways across organisms whilst genetics is an expanding field interlinking multiple disciplines and the basis of the genesis of life and disease.

AmbitionsAfter graduation next year, I would like to do an MSc in Drug Development and Marketing. My long-term goal is to work for a large pharmaceutical company such as GSK and eventually create my own pharmaceutical business.

Anthony Chan

Hobbies and InterestsHi, my name is Anthony Chan. I’m a 2nd year Biomedical Science student at the University of Bradford. My interests revolve around technological advances in consumer technology and their application to medical settings. I am an avid PC gamer and love seeing the progression of hardware and software in the gaming community. My hobbies include origami, especially making 3D-origami models. Another past time is doing different twisty puzzles, ranging from the standard 3x3x3 to high order cubes like the 7x7x7. I learned to play golf at a young age and still play in my free time.

CourseBiomedical Science is a tailored degree that can help me achieve my ambitions with the necessary acquired skills to move in a different direction if my interests change throughout my degree.

I love the mixture of disciplines and their associated practical skills.

The ability to specialise in a discipline in the third year allows you to direct your studies towards a skill set that will benefit me towards achieving my ambitions.

AmbitionsThe third year specialism of cancer biology is what drew me towards this degree, since it allowed me to attain the skills necessary to progress into cancer therapeutic research.

Clinical Sciences

A highlight for a lot of students is the wet anatomy component during the first year, which provides an invaluable insight into human anatomy. The first year is also linked with the medicine MBBS course at the University of Leeds and therefore GMC (General Medical Council) accredited.

The course is intense but provides many opportunities for personal development. The enhancement of life-long learning strategies and key transferable skills, such as communication and teamwork, enables students to achieve the optimum academic and professional standards necessary for professional practice.

The main aim of this course is to provide students with the core scientific knowledge and clinical application skills, which are required in both the medical and healthcare professions. The course integrates individual, team-based and problem-based learning when studying the core and chosen modules. For example, workshops in the Genetics module consist of small groups of 2-3 members tackling the assigned questions. We undertake various clinical and analytical assignments in the core modules of Special Studies and Personal and Professional Development (PPD).

Majidah Khaliq

Hobbies and InterestsHello there, I’m Majidah, pronounced Myda. There is a silent ‘j’ and at this point I just tell people that my parents liked choosing a complicated name! I’m currently studying Clinical Sciences at the University of Bradford, and commute there from Halifax, a 12-minute journey on the train.

I am fond of learning languages. I have been self-studying Arabic and Korean, whilst participating in the Language Society at university. More often that not, I can be seen carrying a book to keep myself busy on my journeys, as I like to travel and visit places. I find particular peace being by canals, lakes and trees. If I’m not walking in these beautiful places, I enjoy running there. I’m also a frequent attender at my local basketball and karate centres, two sports I enjoy thoroughly.

CourseClinical Sciences is a rollercoaster ride comprising a mixture of objectivity and empathy, which is what attracted me to this course. I have found it a brilliant way to learn about the anatomy and physiology of the human body, something that deeply fascinates me. This course integrates clinical, problem-based and traditional styles of learning in all aspects of the teaching, which I find unique and enjoyable.

AmbitionsAt the beginning, I did not know what to expect from Clinical Sciences, though it was a gateway to medicine, a profession I am seeking to study, but has proved to be much more than that. It is a challenging but satisfying course, and I hope to build on the degree and become more involved in the healthcare system in the future, principally through the medical field.

Forensic and Medical Sciences

The university offers world class teaching facilities with some academics still practicing in the law enforcement industry. Course relevant facilities include a Crime Scene Facility housing a Briefing Room, Exhibits Store and Equipment Store. The Crime Scene Facility has rooms which are utilised for reconstructed crime scenes. These provide valuable experiences to students who wish to pursue a career in the forensics industry.

There are a wide range of career opportunities available to FMS (Forensic and Medical Sciences) graduates. These may include the NHS, forensic science or police scientific support laboratories. Graduates have also found work as Health and Safety Executives, in public analysts’ laboratories, and found opportunities in both public, private and corporate industry.

Following my study of Forensic and Medical Sciences, I believe that the course is an engaging and demanding discipline that requires a deep understanding of acquiring, analysis and testing of evidence recovered at a crime scene. After close examination of evidence, scientists will provide impartial conclusions based on physical evidence and present them in court. The focus of the course is to develop core skills in biological sciences, and apply them to medical sciences and forensic casework. Emphasis is placed on biosciences, then shifts towards disease processes, and approaches to the limitations of forensic investigation over a wide range of physical evidence types. The course offers a wide range of specialisms in collaboration with the School of Archaeological Sciences, such as forensic anthropology.

Team Bradford

There are currently around 90 societies and almost 40 sports teams at the University of Bradford, which are all run for students, by students! Furthermore, you can even start up your own society if you and your friends have a great idea!

Here at the University of Bradford, we have academic and recreational societies. The majority of courses have an associated society, such as Bradford Association of Pharmacy Students (BAPS), Biomedical and Healthcare Science Society (BAHSS) and Medical and Clinical Sciences Society (MCSS). This provides a platform to allow the provision of academic support and leisure activities to each course.

They host both academic and social events in which students can get to know each other and offer advice and tips. Recreational societies vary incredibly, from the Anime society to the first aid and vegetarian societies.

Sports clubs are a big part of Team Bradford and are open to everyone to try. We have a range of activities, including: Trampolining, Cheerleading, Rugby, Archery, Racket sports, Horse riding, and many more sports clubs. All of these clubs are free to join, as long as you have a gym membership. These clubs offer the opportunity to socialise with students outside of your course and meet likeminded people!

Team Bradford represents all our sports clubs, societies, media areas and volunteers. It is the student platform that champions all student successes, achievements and campaigns.
