2. Taxonomic information

To determine the list of new species of mammals we first compared the work of Wilson and Reeder(1993, 2005), following the nomenclature of the latter. After we completed the first draft of themanuscript a list of species of mammals recently described was published by Reeder et al. (2007).We compared our list and supplemented it with information from that study; our list contains,however, several species overlooked by them.

3. Mapping information

The data set contains geographic ranges for 407 species of terrestrial mammals of the world. We didnot map marine species. We digitized the maps with geographic reference points in the sourcereference directly from the original projection and then we transformed them to a geographicalprojection in decimal degrees. We employed a geographic information system, including Arc Viewshape files for each species, to do the spatially-explicit analysis. The files contain the knowngeographic range depicted either as a boundary map, also known as the extent of occurrence(Gaston, 2003).
