IT'S A PENALTY It’s a Penalty (IAP) as an ‘Industry Partner’ of the of the new research Observatory for Human Rights and Major Events (HaRM) in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management (SHTM), collaborating with each other’s work relating to Major Sporting Events, human trafficking and exploitation policies and practices, to raise awareness and tackle structural problems in the run up and live staging periods. Over the next seven days, SHTM are hosting a series of talks with Sarah de Carvalho, CEO, It’s a Penalty, and SHTM Executive in Residence, discussing collaborating with the travel and tourism industry to end human trafficking. THERE'S NO PENALTY FOR STUDENTS TO GET INVOLVED!

It’s a Penalty’s ultimate goal is to eradicate abuse, exploitation and trafficking by 2030, contributing to theelimination of modern-day slavery. Since 2014, we have facilitated the rescue and protection of almost 17,000survivors of human trafficking and exploitation.

Join Sarah de Carvalho at a series of talks in the school across the coming week starting today, Friday March12th at our Alumni event and next week where she will be involved in a series of lectures, talks, debates andfuture research direction setting across the school.

It’s a Penalty (IAP) campaigns to prevent the fastgrowing and second largest criminal industry inthe world: human trafficking and exploitation.Its awareness-raising Campaigns harness thepower of sport to prevent trafficking andexploitation on a global scale. In addition,Research & Advocacy work ensures that childrenworldwide are legally protected from sexualexploitation and abuse. Its Student AmbassadorNetwork amplifies youth voices, encouragingadvocacy, activism and awareness raising to endhuman trafficking and exploitation.

Through collaboration and partnership withstrategic stakeholders, such as high-profilesporting athletes, and the travel and tourismindustry, It’s a Penalty has been able to achievesignificant results.

Observatory for Human Rights and Major Events - Research Group

To see human trafficking eradicated andmaximise It’s a Penalty’s impact, they also joinforces with sporting governing bodies/hostingcommittees, local and international NGOs,governments, corporations and law enforcement.They believe that collaboration is key toachieving their goals.

It’s a Penalty has launched CommonProtect, anadvocacy programme as part of its commitmentto building a world in which no child isvulnerable to exploitation or abuse. Workingwith Commonwealth governments to enact andimplement comprehensive extraterritoriallegislation against CSEA where it does not exist,in as many Commonwealth states as possible. The Student Ambassador programme seeks toprovide future social justice changemakers witha space to embrace creativity, enhanceemployability, and champion a social initiative tocomplement academic learning and skill sets.
