Welcome and Holiday Greetings to you All,

It is with great pleasure that Kora Shrine brings the Fifth Annual Feztival of Trees to the Lewiston and Auburn area. If you haven’t previously had the opportunity to join us for this weeklong event, please make a point to do so this year. We have a record-breaking number of Trees that will be raffled off this year, not to mention the beautiful decorations throughout our building that will dazzle the eyes of visitors. We also have a wonderful Craft Fair which occupies our first floor space in our historic dining hall which is circled by larger than life original murals painted by Harry Cochran over 80 years ago. A food court will be operated as in past years to satisfy your hunger and warm you up from the cold north wind we expect to be howling outside. Santa will be there along with his workshop, a “Fish Pond” for the children, picture taking of the children with Santa, musical performances, and a silent auction fill out our offerings for hours of good old-fashioned fun.

So we welcome you all to bundle up against the winter chill and come join us for what is fast becoming one of Lewiston and Auburn’s premier events. Check out our hours of operation listed in this insert and then set some time aside to drop by and experience the sights. Santa is waiting!

Despite all the world renowned characteristics of the Shriners - the guys in little cars; clowns; marching bands and bagpipers; and the celebrated Shrine Circus – perhaps the most visible in Maine, as well as arguably the most important, is the annual Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic high school senior all-star football game. Sponsored by the Kora Temple in Lewiston, this is their only fundraiser from which 100% of the net proceeds is entirely dedicated to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, a unique network of 22 pediatric facilities dedicated to the treatment of a variety of orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries, cleft lips and palates, and burn injuries, always without financial obligation to the patients or families. And certainly nothing better exemplifies the overarching purpose of the Shrine, founded in the 1870s to provide a new avenue of “fun and fellowship” to members of the Masonic movement.

Dedicated to the premise that, “Strong legs run so that weak legs may walk,” the Lobster Bowl has raised over $375,000 for Shriners Hospitals. Between five and six thousand people attend each year, plus 88 players, 16 coaches; parents and fans; and for the past 11 years, 45 cheerleaders and 10 cheering coaches per year. The 22nd annual game is scheduled to be played on Saturday, July 23, at Waterhouse Field in Biddeford.

“The Biddeford community has been a great host,” said Lobster Bowl general chairman, Tim Luttrell. “Fan support has been outstanding - this is their Super bowl! The athletic director, the boosters, the entire community – they just can’t do enough for us. They have been terrific,” he added.

T h e M a i n e St a t e C o a c h e s Association selects graduating senior players from around the state who have been nominated by the high school coach. All p a r t i c i p a t i n g p l a y e r s a n d cheerleaders raise $300 each to help offset the costs of a week-long residency-based training camp.

Five hundred people attend the awards banquet held the night before the game, when training camp breaks. For the past five years, the Lobster Bowl has also hosted an alumni golf tournament in what has become a successful effort to re-engage past players, cheerleaders and coaches back into the effort to support the Shrine’s dedicated philanthropic endeavor. Since their inception in 1922, the Shriners Hospitals for Children have treated a three-quarters of a million kids at no charge.

This past summer, the Lobster Bowl partnered with the Maine Games and hosted Maine’s segment of the NFL’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition for the first time. There were more than 40 participants and the fan-favorite passing finals were held on the f ield during halftime. Winners have the chance to advance to regional and national competitions.

“ T he gam e and a l l of the celebration surrounding it are as much about raising awareness

of The Shrine and Shriners Hospitals, as about raising money,” Luttrell explained. Since its founding in 1872, the Shrine has focused on combining fun and fellowship among Master Masons, members of the ancient order of Freemasonry, with a dedication to good works.

The philanthropic mission of the Shrine was redef ined to focus on the needs of children with particularly devastating orthopaedic conditions more than 80 years ago, and hundreds of Maine kids, along with tens of thousands from throughout New England and the entire continent have benefited from this particular dedication and expertise.

“The game has been a way to recognize some of the best athletes the state has produced, attract attention to the Shrine fraternity and especially to the hospitals. We have been fortunate to receive outstanding media coverage, as well. It has really come to represent the best of what Shriners are all about,” Luttrell added.

An active Board of Governors that meets 10 times a year manages the classic. The board is actively engaged in forming a formal Alumni Association, and is trying to track down 21 years’ worth of former players and coaches. The Lobster Bowl has assumed a life of its own, and while it has come to transcend the Temple, which continues as its sponsor, it continues to provide a unique bridge between the Fellowship, the hospitals, and the larger community of Maine.

It has established itself as the premier kickoff for the holiday season in Lewiston-Auburn, and it’s back, bigger and better than ever, for its fifth consecutive year. Named for the distinctive headgear by which Shriners are known throughout the world, the FEZtival of Trees returns to the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston.

“We just can’t thank the community enough,” said Tim Luttrell, committee member since its inception. “We hoped that the FEZtival could become an affordable, fun, family activity that would start the season, but the level of support we’ve gotten from the community has well exceeded our initial expectations. Attendance has more than tripled since we started – more than 7,000 people visited the FEZtival last year – and there will be more than 50 trees on display this year.” Trees are sponsored by individuals and businesses, are fully decorated, and are arrayed in the temple’s great Ceremonial Hall for two weeks in November.

Visitors can participate in raffles for each individual tree, many of which are festooned with gift certificates and other prizes. The highlight of 2009 was a tree trimmed with $500 worth of Maine State Lottery scratch tickets, and the winner of that tree could have won a great deal more than the tickets cost. Winners this year will be drawn as the FEZtival concludes on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. There are also all sorts of other raffles, live entertainment, a silent auction, plenty of food, and a craft fair. Santa will be on hand, as well, and there will be a “fishing pond” where kids can troll for prizes; there is now a waiting list for crafters. A silent auction has become a big part of the event, featuring all sorts of handcrafted items that generate spirited bidding.

“We’re attracting media attention from all around the state,” Luttrell explained, “and we have reporters calling us for information to do stories about the FEZtival. I know that parking has been challenging in the past couple of years, but we’ll have

For over a century it has been one of Lewiston’s most familiar l a n d m a r k s , ye t i t re m a i ns s h r o u d e d i n my s t e r y a n d superstition, an enigma to all but the members and families who regularly enjoy its resplendent treasures. And while the main thrust of the FEZtival of trees is indeed the collection of fully decorated Christmas trees to be raffled, the event also provides a rare opportunity to experience the interior of this enigmatic structure.

An architectural gem, the Kora Shrine Center at the corner of Sabattus and Main streets is among the most opulent facilities still in use anywhere in the Shriners’ organization. “We’re

at least in the top two or three,” said amateur Shrine historian, Frank Preble. “People tell me that as little kids, they used to walk by the Temple to and from school everyday. Some of them would cross the street because [they found the building] too intimidating!” On the other hand, Shriners and Masons from all over the world have been coming to Lewiston for generations, specifically for the chance to visit this unique edifice.

The original Kora Temple was established in 1892, with the first physical location on Lisbon Street. A group of enterprising local businessmen and civic leaders, members of the early Shrine, committed themselves and the local chapter to creating the first temple in Maine, effectively preempting Portland.

Eventually, “they decided they needed more room, and a building of their own” Preble explained, “so they moved to Sabattus and Main streets, which was considered the outskirts of town at the time,” with construction undertaken shortly after the turn of the 20th Century. Construction was completed in late 1908 and the center was dedicated in 1909. Far more intricate and nuanced than public buildings typical of the mill towns of northern New England at the height of the industrial revolution, the new Temple quickly achieved iconic status both in the local communit y and among the S h r i n e r s ’ ow n b u r g e o n i n g community throughout North America. The of f icial 100th a n n i v e r s a r y R e d e d i c a t i o n Ceremony was held in March of this 2009.The Kora Temple is dominated by two large gathering spaces: the grand Ceremonial Hall, and the imposing dining hall, which is noted for its priceless collection of murals painted by the renowned Maine artist, Harry Cochrane. Born in Augusta in 1860, Cochrane

The Kora Shrine started this unique tradition as a fundraising event to support the local temple, its fraternity and good works. In addition to a chance to get an early start on the holiday spirit, and perhaps win a tree for your own home, the FEZtival provides a rare opportunity for the general public to visit the iconic temple that has dominated Lewiston’s downtown for a full century.

Among the oldest and most ornate facilities still in use anywhere in the U.S. network of Shriners’ organizations, the building itself has been shrouded in mystery for much of its history here. Especially

during the FEZtival, the atmosphere inside the Temple is most often described as “breathtaking,” and it is open to the public only during FEZtival hours:

Saturday, November 20from 10 a.m.–8 p.m.

All of the nearly three dozen Shrine units and clubs – such as Kora Klowns, Kora Crazy Cops, the Kora Band, the Funsters, the Royal Guard – will welcome visitors, and there will be information available about membership in the Masons (order of Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons, the lodges of Freemasonry, one of the world’s oldest and largest fraternal organizations), p r e r e q u i s i t e t o a c h i e v i n g membership in the Shrine.

Admission to the temple and the FEZtival remains only $2 per person (kids under 12 are free), and tickets for the tree raffle are 10 for $5. You can enter to win an individual tree five times; five different trees once each, or anything in between. Income from admissions and raffles is used for maintenance of this special facility, and proceeds from craft sales accrue to the participating crafters.

Known for its special combination of f ami l y - or iente d f un and philanthropy, especial ly the network of specialized hospitals providing free care to kids all over the nation, the Kora Shrine has created the FEZtival as a way to celebrate the season. All are welcome for this limited time opportunity to see beyond the walls.

Kora Temple: Familiar mystery achieved prominence as the architect, designer and interior artist responsible for Cumston Hall, in Monmouth, in 1900. During the period between 1922 and 1927, Cochrane, himself a lifelong Shriner,

created 15 distinctive murals for the Lewiston temple, some painted directly on the dining hall walls, some in his studio and later hung in

Changing the world by caring for kidsIn January of this year, Frank Preble, past potentate of the Kora Shrine Temple in Lewiston, became the first Mainer ever to chair the board of directors of the Shriners Hospital for Children, established in Springfield, MA in 1925 and now celebrating its 85th year.

Operating a net work of 19 hospitals dedicated to pediatric s p e c i a l t y c a r e , i n n o v a t i v e medicine, surgery, and research treating children suffering from a variety of devastating orthopaedic conditions and spinal cord injuries, plus another three facilities which treat young burn victims, Shriners Hospitals for Children have treated more than three-quarters of a million kids since their inception in 1922, without ever imposing out-of-pocket charges for anyone. Mainers, especially, are fortunate to have easy access to both one of the world’s foremost

pediatric orthopaedic facilities, in Springfield, and also to the Shriners burn treatment facility in Boston. In June of this year, staff from Springfield came to Central Maine Medical Center to perform check-ups on Shrine patients from Maine, and saw more than 100 patients in one day. Anther outreach clinic is planned for CMMC in early December.

Last year alone, the Springfield hospital treated more than 20,000 kids and provided more out-patient orthopaedic care to kids than any hospital in the world except Mexico City.

“We don’t set broken bones,” Preble explained. “We provide state-of-the art, specialized care that isn’t available anywhere else,” even, he asserted, at Children’s Hospital in Boston. “Children’s

treats cancer, internal medicine issues, general surgery – no one else has the dedicated resources to focus on orthopaedic treatment that we do.”

Originally established to treat children with polio, the services of the Shriners Hospital in Spr ingf ie ld have e xp ande d to cover everything from “the most routine to the most rarely seen orthopaedic conditions,” according to the hospital ’s brochure. “Our specially trained medical team strives to put the joys of childhood into the life of every child.”

Representative of its unique focus on the orthopaedic health of kids, the Springfield hospital has published a handy reference card entitled, “School Backpack Awareness,” intended to help

avert problems of injured muscles or joints. Cards are available from most Shriners, or from the Kora Temple. More information is available from the hospitals’ website, www.shrinershospitals.org.

Because the next closest Shriners orthopaedic hospitals are in Montreal and Philadelphia, the Springf ield Hospital serves a vast population. The hospital “family” includes nearly 12,000 active patients, 230 employees, 170 volunteers and over 23,000 Shriners from 17 Shrine Centers in New England and New York. The operating budget last year was $25-million, and the hospital staff performed 780 surgical procedures and treated more than 18,000 outpatients.

While Maine has ex officio board

membership at the hospitals in Boston, Montreal and Springfield, this is the first time in the 85-year history of the Springfield hospital that a Mainer has chaired the board. Preble continues to be active in the Kora Shrine, of course, and in various other Masonic organizations in Maine.

“It’s possible,” Preble said, “to be involved in some Masonic activity every night of the week.” He is, and more than that.

Masonry is in large part about good works, and the Shriners have elevated that purpose, through their hospital network, to a specific and unique level of service. That such service continues to be supported through fun and fellowship carries the 19th Century vision of the founders of the Shrine fraternity well into the 21st.

the Temple. In addition to the big rooms, the temple is also home to some two-dozen clubhouse rooms occupied by the ceremonial, parade and circus units that are the public face of the Shrine. The Potentates’ Room, a sizable lounge area, includes portraits of the leaders of the Kora Shrine dating back to its earliest days, and the building also provides office space for current leadership and staff, storage, massive kitchen areas, and precious archives. While you can see the major gathering spaces and the m u r a l s , o n l i n e a t w w w.k o r a s h r i n e r s . o r g / a b o u t -us/inside.shtml, the virtual experience is nothing at all like the breathtaking opportunity to actually be inside that space, imm er s e d in centur y - o ld tradition and surrounded by precious artwork, distinctive architecture, and the palpable mysteries of a millennium of Freemasonry. And for the $2 price of admission to the FEZtival, you now have the unusual opportunity to satisfy perhaps a lifetime of wonder and speculation. Tour to your heart’s content.
