As we prepare for another upcoming holiday season, it means that it is time once again for the Kora Shrine FEZtival of Trees. This will be our 12th annual event, and we expect it will be just as exciting as the previous FEZtivals have been.
The Feztival Committee has worked hard all year, working out the multiple details and during the first week in November the nobles and their ladies became highly energized as we began to set up the Shrine Center for the “Big Show!”
If you have not had the opportunity to visit the FEZtival, I invite you to join us in our Shrine Center which in and of itself is a beautiful building. While there, you will have the opportunity to view a wide variety of crafts, raffle items, seasonal music by local schools and community groups, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, a fish pond for the children, and the main attraction being the multiple decorated trees, all of which will be raffled off Saturday, Nov. 25.
Please put Nov. 18 to 25 as FEZtival week on your calendar. We look forward to seeing you in our Shrine Center.
May you have a most blessed holiday season.

The holiday season is upon us. And for the Lewiston/Auburn a re a it be g in s at th e Kor a Shrine Center wi t h th e 12t h annual FEZtival of Trees!
The object of the feztival is to have organizations and busi-nesses donate fully-decorated a r t i f icia l tr ees th at w i l l be d i s pl a y e d t h ro u g hout t h e week and raff led off. Each tree winner keeps the tree as well as all the decorations and gifts i ncluded by th e sponsor of that tree.
T he th eme fo r th is ye a r ’s FEZtiva l is Ca ndy Ca ne an d Gingerbread. And Kora Shrine Center is th e per fec t place to get lost in an encha nted fa ntasy wi t h th e seasona l sights of delightf ul goodies an d gingerbread houses. Christmas trees, gingerbread men and visions of the holidays will transform many of these historical rooms and hallways into a “sweet” and wistful paradise.
For those who like more than just magnificent trees and decor, there w ill be a raff le room w ith numerous items . . . simply deposit a raff le ticket and that item may be yours! Again, this year will be the famous Lottery Tree decorated with $500 worth of lottery tickets, a 50-50 raff le, and last but not least Reggie’s Sales and Service has donated a chain saw that a lucky winner will receive.
The aroma of popcorn, soups, pizza, baked goods and daily luncheon and dinner specia ls wi ll lead you stra ight to th e dining hall which will be filled with more than 25 crafters for any shopper’s pleasure. Daily, live entertainment in the mez-zanine, including such talents as Fairview Elementary School Chor us an d Tinpa nic Steel Dr um wi ll cer ta in ly ti ck le th e senses and sounds of the season.
Santa will be taking time out from his busy schedule for the entire week to listen to children’s hopes for Christmas and photos with the white-haired wonder will be available as well. The famous Fishing Pond will be open for the season to reel in
toys and treats for the little ones.
This year is a special one as Kora Shrine Center celebrates its 125th anniversar y of being a ceremonial space and meeting place where it’s members, aff iliated w ith freemasonr y, are known for their charitable works. So, this is the perfect year to thank each and every volunteer who makes this FEZtival a success in helping to preserve this historical building as well as keep it alive with activity. Countless hours from dozens of nobles and their ladies are so appreciated; from year-round decoration making to ticket selling, from monthly meetings to greeting gu ests, from securit y to Sa nta-photo ta k ing or from organizing to serving and cooking food. No matter how mundane the task, our volunteers see the overall mission and are full-speed ahead. Other special thanks go to our sponsors who prov ide either products or dollars to help in expenses, along with tree sponsors, crafters; everyone involved is appre-ciated, even if we could not list them all. Again, we thank you!
‘Tis the FEZtival season once again

In December of 1891, a group of 23 local men met to explore the steps it would take to establish a Shrine Temple in Lewiston. It was so excepted by the Imperial Council of America and the charter for Kora Temple was issued in August of 1892; the name
Kora coming from a small town in India.
Ea rly meet ings were held at th e Golden Cross Ha l l or th e Masonic Ha ll in Lew iston an d in 1896 under Potentate JF Babbitt, members met in th e Cressey Bui lding on Lisbon Street. The first meeting under official charter was held on Sept. 27, 1892, an d as membership grew, th e decision was made to build a new temple. Ground brea k ing (where th e Shrine Center stands today) was in the early spring of 1908. The interior was complete and in March of 1909 the building was officially dedicated. The cost was approximately $300,000; all raised from local donations.
The murals in the dining hall were painted by fellow Noble Harry H. Cochrane, who was born in Augusta and had gradu-ated from the New York Art School and Chicago Art Institute. Cochrane had traveled extensively in Europe study ing th e art work of the Old Masters in the principle art centers of the old world. He was an artist, architect, composer, conductor, musician, singer, writer and poet and was acclaimed as one of the world’s greatest mural painters. With an all-expense paid trip to the Holy Land, his knowledge of Biblica l recordings of the events depicted in these murals greatly inf luenced his
interpretation and authenticit y. The murals in the banquet hall were painted over a five-year period between 1922 and 1927 and the sixt y-foot mural “The Conquest of Jerusalem” was painted in place. His other works can be seen in over 150 churches and Masonic buildings throughout New England.
The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 for its distinctive Moorish-inspired architec-ture and received the Lewiston Historic Preservation Review Boards “Historic Preservation Honor Award” in 1999. In 2015 Kora Sh r i ne Center was al so awa rded th e “E xcel lence in Preservation Award” from the City of Lewiston Historic Pres-ervation Review Board in recognition of outstanding efforts to protect, preserve and enhance historic buildings in Lewiston.

Thursday, November 165:00 pm - 7:00 pm
We hope that you will join us for a very festive BusinessAfter Hours at the Kora Shrine Feztival of Trees!
Catered by DaVinci’s, with special door prizes, a silent auction, and an opportunity to win an amazing Christmas tree decorated
by an area business or agency!
Shr iners may have been on based on family, but all agree that the benefits far outweigh the birthright. In his role as Potentate, Ga i ley ser ves on t he boa rd of d i re c tor s for Shriners Hospitals in Boston. He considers the opportunity eye-opening on a multitude of levels.
A f f i l iate d wi t h Ma s s achu-setts General, the hospital is a highly-specia lized pediat-ric surgica l ca re center an d considered one of the world’s preeminent hospita ls in th e t reat ment of ch i ld ren wi t h severe burn injuries, complex sk in conditions, ort hopedic conditions and clef t lip and palate. The hospitals provide care to thousands of children annua lly at no cost to fami-
lies, and have done so since t he fi rst one opened in New Orleans in 1922.
“I’m goi ng dow n th ere at 5 o’clock in the morning and I ask myself why,” Gailey said of the making the long drive to Boston a couple t i mes a month. “But then I’m driving back at 6 o’clock at night and I know exactly why.”
