- The only drawback in this hack was giving extra focus on scheduling, but the trade-off derived was worth the effort.

BIM tools like Revit are excellent for doing repetitive and mundane tasks without much training to the end user in most cases. But sometimes innovation/hacks becomenecessary to accomplish certain tasks that would take a lot of time unnecessarily like just to put trees in an orderly manner. Many OOTB Revit tools do not do a good job in this regard and that’s where nesting of families comes to this regard and that’s where nesting of families comes to the rescue.

The site for this project wasn’t flat as couldbe seen in this aerial view. But the idea of my boss was to showcase to the client how would the site development alter the scenery once construction gets completed.

- An OOTB Tree Family in Revit is nested inside a Baluster Family Template.

- After loading the nested family in the project environment, theRailing functionality is tweaked to show trees in place of Balustersat fixed distances.

- The layout of trees on a 179 acre area was now just a matter ofclicks compared to the traditional way of clicking for every tree instance.

Various types of Revit condo unitfiles linked into the main site topographyfile.

My thesis project in college isn’t something am proud of. I was pre-sented with an opportunity to work with one of my juniors to redeem the lost chance. I helped her out with site topography and models of the various condo units like 3BHK, 2bhk, Studio apartments, villas, clubhouse, site sections, sciography studies etc. This exercise was a great learning experience in managing all the linked Revit files which were making the main site file really heavy to manage. This reassured my belief that today’s architects can’t be just limited to knowing only my belief that today’s architects can’t be just limited to knowing only traditional architecture knowledge of form, function etc. Being tech savvy has it’s own place in today’s digital world and Architectural field isn’t insulated from it in any way.

BWSL - Cable-stayed Bridge (Mumbai)

My office is competingin a competition to design and plan the installation of Shivaji statue in the middle of Arabian Sea just like the Statue of Liberty. Taking a google image and dividing it in Revit I tried to make building blocks with random heights using Dynamo.

The Bandra Worli Sea Link is a cable-stayed bridge with pre-stressed concrete steel viaducts on either side that links Bandra in the Western suburbs of Mumbai with Worli in South Mumbai. This was one of my first attempt at making anything in a visual programming software. The inspiration for making this bridge was from Zach Kron who made a suspension bridge in Dynamo for a video tutorial. Being one of the most recognisable and iconic structures in Mumbai, I thought it would be good idea to replicate the BWSL structure in Dynamo.replicate the BWSL structure in Dynamo.

MANE PALMS - Moroccon style Residential apartments (Karjat)

Moroccan style is a new trend in decoration which takes its roots from Moorish architecture. Moorish architecture is an architecture of western part of North-Africa and Iberian peninsula which began during the Islamisation of thse region.

Revit modelling is a major revenue generating business in many countries with India emerging as one of the leadingand cheap labour market. The drawback with this paradigm is there is no actual designing done leveraging any power of Revit ranging from massing studies, siteRevit ranging from massing studies, sitelocation, sciography studies etc.

The arches were made by editing the profile of wall elements. Wall sweeps were used to model the crownings.

Revit Groups allow capturing repetition in the building model.

This project was my first chance of working on a big scale architectural project. Since I had just graduated and took up job on the basis of my Revit skills, I now realize how much better this could have been done. With time you gain experience. The architect was inspired by the Moroccan style of decorations and architecture. He was particularly interested in the modeling capability of Revit and stunning visual feedback in relatively shorter time span. As a rookie and fresh graduate I was just involved with reproducing his plans and ideas on Revit for his perusal and fine tuning. I left the job mid-way and this is just a representation of my earlier days of serious work in Revit with renewed interest unlike during college days.serious work in Revit with renewed interest unlike during college days.

Revit 2015 ModelRevit 2012 Model

The Architect on this project wanted to put up a fabric roof like the Denver International Airport on arelatively small sized clubhouse. The initial model was made in 3ds Max as none was comfortable with using Revit to do the same. This was my first attempt at making use of the massing family environment in Revit.

I attempted to make the same family again in Revit 2015 version although this time with fewer parameters and at a faster pace. Since Dynamo is a fairly new software for me to explore and gain mastery on, I tried making the same mastery on, I tried making the same family in it. The benefit of getting a visual feedback and faster design iterations is good in Dynamo but I realised with this exercise, sometimesit’s better to model in Revit given investment of time as constraint.

Parametric Solar Panels - BIMIndia Competition (IIT-Delhi)

The only way to make a panel point directly to the sun was by manual value inputs in parameters.

Revit Families

Building View

I had helped one of my college friend with his competition. His intention was to install a parametric array of solar panel system on an ancilliary building called Campus Innovation Center. I designed a fully parametric Revit family with ability to increase/decrease the Length, width, rows, columns of the grid and also a total 360 degree revolving and tilting panels supported on it. This was once again done by nesting of families. The biggest and only drawback was I couldn’t make the panels point normally to the sun settings. I did this family in version 2012 of Revit and Dynamo wasn’t released yet. But the idea that something will come around later to solve this type of design problem was on our mind. the idea that something will come around later to solve this type of design problem was on our mind.

Isometric Sectional View

The problem with most of the architecturalfirms these days is that Revit is being used asjust another 3D modelling tool and is not used to actually ‘design’ and take advantage of the “I”in BIM i.e. information. In all the offices that I got to work with since graduation, none of them tried to take advantage of the schedulingthem tried to take advantage of the schedulingcapabilities in Revit and drive design decisions. They have been working on 2D based drawingsfor long years and know how to deliver a project. But a 2D based approached limits your designing skills and you kind of get restricted to thinking only in terms of rectilinear forms and spaces. Computational designing frees youand spaces. Computational designing frees you from such hadicaps to a certain degree..

The site for this project was on a sloped surface. Revit was leveraged to make the topography based on the CAD contour site file which enabled to make cross sections of site and helped in designing UG tankpositioning and cut and fill analysis.

After all analysis and designingexercises, the approval drawings and Construction drawings wereall taken up in AutoCAD.

This was my first ever project in interior designing. Though the quantities were are all determined by the office esimators in Excel beforehand, they wanted me to show them how could they derive any benefits using a fully made model. Right from paint quantities, wall paper, ceiling costing, flooring, curtain wall panels etc. every-thing was tallied with information extracted using scheduling in Revit.

Visual feedback is a fast and efficient way to check for model consistency compared to rows and columns of data some-times. Whether it’s flooring layout, types of rooms, ceiling installation etc. the “Color Schemes” functionality in Revit is a quick way to check for model consistency.

This project was about designing an IT office. I wanted to see if I could make a parametric curtain panel that would enable us to see the amount of light coming in through the openable curtain wall panels that was supposed to be installed on the side facing North light. Though I could make the Curtain Panel family and respond to parameters without breaking we didn’t utilise Daylight analysis softwares breaking we didn’t utilise Daylight analysis softwares like Ecotect, to see the effect of sunlight on the structure. The inspiration for design of this structure was from the Shanghai Expo Centre in China.
