to complete the application information once online, and then make
only changes in future years. Hopefully, this will streamline the
process and encourage additional membership.
Since this is my last President’s Page, I’d like to extend a
heartfelt thank-you to all of the volunteers who made this year
possible. It’s amazing how much work is done “behind the scenes” to
make all that we do possible – speakers for the monthly meetings, the
newsletter, the website, the golf tournament, the Mock Dig, science fair
judging , continuing education, the Christmas Party, the Hit and Run
event, Spring Fling, etc. If you helped with any SGS activities, thank
you very much. You made this a very successful year for the SGS and
made my job much easier.
This year has been a learning experience for me and I’ve
enjoyed making new friends as I learned the responsibilities of the
President. I was blessed with both a great group of people to serve with
on the Board, and with many selfless volunteers. It has always amazed
me how so much can be done by so few, especially since virtually all
of us have full-time jobs and families as well. Again, thank you for
your help.
Have a wonderful summer and remember to sign up online and
participate in some of the great activities and volunteer opportunities
the SGS has to offer next year.

Biography
While serving in the U.S. Navy, Gary Hanson conducted coastal
surveys and oceanographic research in the Mediterranean Sea and
classified acoustic research in the Pacific, Naval Facility Pt. Sur, CA. As
acting Executive Officer of Oceanographic Unit Five, USNS Harkness
he participated and assisted in planning for the first official post-WWII
inport in Russia (Novorossiysk) by the U.S. Navy in 1974. He began his
oil and gas career with Pennzoil in Shreveport as production geologist in
1976 and immediately began proposing locations and evaluating wells
for hydraulic fracturing in the massive Carthage Field in East Texas. He
later was transferred to the Houston, Texas office where he worked as
exploration team leader for a large Mississippi Basin joint venture. He
served with IMC Exploration as East Texas geologist and later was
promoted to District Exploration Manager. He later participated as
partner in two other Shreveport oil & gas companies (including Heritage
Energy) until 1993. With Tetra Tech, Baton Rouge he served as
hydrogeologist and environmental scientist and was ultimately promoted
to Baton Rouge Office Manager. Working with the Louisiana Oil Spill
Coordinators Office (LOSCO) he led teams throughout much of south
Louisiana’s marshes and bays conducting the first Baseline Sampling

Abstract
“Up Out of the Rabbit Hole: The Future of Oil & Gas
Energy from Local to International Scale
(Shreveport - Washington D.C. - China)”
As shale gas and tight oil plays have proliferated from coast to
coast in North America and have been initiated on other continents and
in countries such as Argentina, many unknowns about long term
production and impact on water resources exists. Many countries such
as China already have serious problems with lack of oil and gas
infrastructure and diminishing water resources, so it is critical to
elucidate “lessons learned” opportunities in the more mature
unconventional fields. The Haynesville Shale play in northwest
Louisiana and East Texas is one example where the hydrocarbon
resource has gone through an almost complete boom-bust cycle
(because of current lull in dry natural gas production). At the peak of
the boom 186 rigs were operating and now only 26 rigs are drilling for
Haynesville Shale. Along with the drastic decline in drilling activity,
which has been caused by the low market value for dry gas, the
pressure to provide significant amounts of water for hydraulic
fracturing has also declined drastically. What has been learned by all
stakeholders and how can this be helpful in maturing and new plays?
Both oil and natural gas are sensitive to product price. Water as a
resource has now become much more important to the oil and gas
industry, agriculture, the general public and a rallying point for
environmental activists (with highly inaccurate claims about potent ial
pollution). The increasing use of hydraulic fracturing to recover natural
gas, natural gas liquids and oil from heretofore non-productive
geological “shale” formations has been the focus of such negative
publicity in some areas of the country and the w orld that it has reached
a stage of almost uncontrolled hysteria. Why has such a well-tested,
proven (utilized for over 60 years) and common well stimulation
technique become such a pariah to certain groups? Regardless of the
lack of validity of claims, th e oil and gas industry is experiencing

significant negative impact. Other regions of the country have learned
of the development of the “Haynesville Model”, where operators,
regulators, local governments and the public have learned to appreciate
the value of local water resources while operators efficiently extract
shale gas. For it is at the local to regional scale that all parties,
especially operators and the public should learn to understand the
essential nexus of water, energy and food security. The lull in
Haynesville activity is an opportune time to develop long-term
solutions. Currently, oil prices, as well as, tight oil drilling in some
fields are starting to decline & natural gas prices seem to be increasing.
It is essential that we take a sober lo ok at fossil energy
(conventional/unconventional oil, gas & coal) from a sustainable and
realistic, long term, national security perspective. Oil and natural gas
are essential components of our nation’s energy future and security.
What are the long-term prospects for oil and gas from the local to
international scale?

Geosteering Horizontal Wells: A Realistic Look
July 16, 20138:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Petroleum Club of Shreveportth15 Floor
The term “geosteering” is loosely used to describe almost any activity or technique devoted to keeping a horizontal lateral in the target reservoir. The goal should always be the same—make a thin reservoir into a thick one. Several different approaches will be discussed. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses. The concepts behind the most prevalent approach will be discussed in detail. Attendees will be exposed to common misunderstandings regarding MWD-LWD log curves and surveys. They are NOT the same as wireline log curves. The practical realities of geosteering will also be addressed including limitations and pitfalls in pre-drill mapping and planning.
InstructorRaymond Woodward
President, BHL Companies
Raymond received his geology degree from Baylor University in 1979. He joined Sonat Exploration in 1987 and was actively involved in their Austin Chalk efforts. This led to his interest in horizontal drilling technology and geosteering. Raymond founded BHL Consulting, Inc. in 2000 and later developed the BORESIGHT Geosteering software program. BHL Boresight, Inc. was spun off from the consulting group and its software is now licensed to over 75 operating companies in the US and Canada.
