May is the final Newsletter of the year which means it's also my final letter as president. I will not miss composing a letter each month as this is the part of the job I dread. I was apprehensive about undertaking the duties of president this year, but being surrounded by a hard working Board and committee chairpersons made doing my job easier. Trae Milam, Alan Schlichtemier, and I are at the end of our three year sentence, I mean term, of serving on the board. The three new board members for next year that were elected at the April general meeting are Roger Berg, Ben Robinson, and Tim Marshall. I have been impressed with all who have served on the Board during my three years, but especially so with the youngest Board members: Matthew Chumley, Jared Dysart, and Trae Milam. They are hard working and smart and I feel the SGS is in good hands for years to come. A special thanks also to Joe Lott. Joe served as Treasurer this year and converted our bookkeeping to QuickBooks. This should make it easier for future treasurers. Last but not least, I would like to thank Demetra Morgan for her service. She ensures continuity from one Board to the next and provides advice and counsel when needed. I could not have done the job without her help.
Morris Nichols did a great job this year as program chairman. When the scheduled April speaker, Brian Lock, had to cancel at late notice due to unavoidable circumstances, Morris quickly found a replacement in Jeff Prilliman with Baker Hughes. Jeff gave a very informative talk titled “High-Resolution LWD Images Used to Optimize Completions in Unconventional Play — North America”.
A Message from the President

Thanks Jeff for coming to speak on such short notice. Andy Taurins is scheduled to present the May program titled “East Texas Woodbine Formation — How horizontal well technology has impacted development in the play” on May 15, 2012. Please send your reservations to Morris at or fax 318-425-2211.
Bill Meaney has scheduled a continuing education program for May 7, 2012. Dr. John M. Holbrook from Texas Christian University will present a one-day program on “Fluvial Stratigraphy”. The
thprogram will be held at the Petroleum Club on the 15 floor. Attendance will be limited to the first 75 paid registrations. At the time of this writing, the registration is still open.
I would like to thank Kevin and Rachel Hill for all their hard work on the website and Newsletter this year. If you have information about our profession or science of which you would like to relay or inform the membership, a letter to the editor would be a good way to contact other members. If you have any news or announcements for society members that need to be put on the website or newsletter, contact Kevin or Rachel Hill. Visit the SGS website at .
Just a reminder that other SGS events in the first part of May include the Spring Fling on May 5 at East Ridge Country Club from 6 to 9, and SGS Hit and Run (5K run and tennis tournament) on May 11, 2012 at Pierremont Oaks Tennis Club. Contact Trae Milam for questions about the Spring Fling. Contact Cody Lenert or Anthony Spano regarding the Hit and Run.

Abstract
“East Texas Woodbine Formation — How horizontal well technology has impacted development in the play”
The Woodbine play in Madison, Leon, and Brazos Counties, has traditionally been developed with vertical wells. Improvements in horizontal well drilling and completion techniques have led to a renaissance for the Woodbine formation in East Texas, leading to producers drilling horizontal wells between previously depleted vertical wells. Vertical wells in the area traditionally had an initial average production rate of 35 BOPD and an ultimate recovery of 75,000 Bbls, new horizontal wells have an initial production of up to 1,400 BOPD and EUR's in excess of 500,000 Bbls. The horizontal Woodbine is now one of the most sought-after assets in the country.
This presentation will detail the history of the play and discuss the current activity as well as some of the results of recent wells in the area.
