The Group hold regular committee meetings and drop-ins for residents. Chairman Terry Baines, works with his group, neighbourhood wardens and local authorities, to bring harmony to the estate. A number of incidents and anti-social issues have seen it receive negative publicity, much of it undeserved, according to Terry.“A lot of the bad press is unfounded,” he said. “I moved here at the start of the year and I feel safer than I did in Warrington. I think it’s a small minority ruining it for the rest. I am proud of this estate, we just need more community cohesion and support.”The 164 members tried to address what they feel are the area’s biggest problems. Events such as the visit of a bouncy Stonehenge during the Milton Keynes IF Festival, and the Summer Fun Day helped boost community spirit. People were able to listen to music, throw wet sponges at volunteers in stocks and generally have a good time. They were supported by grants from Community First funding, Campbell Park Parish Council, as well as Milton Keynes Council, also donated ingredients from Asda and the local Co-op.“We have had some fantastic engagement with people in and around the community and I have noticed a lot of change.” Said Terry: “In general we have noticed a decrease in anti-social behaviour.”“We haven’t fully cracked it, but we have started a Youth Forum to get some feedback on what young people want.”

Melting Pot is a metaphor for society’s elements melting together

Jade Jaiyeola is Milton Keynes ‘Mother Theresa’ found on hospital runs, delivering food parcels to patients with sickle cell anaemia. Although petite, there is nothing small about the warmth and compassion she radiates. Laughing throughout, it would be easy to overlook the challenges she faces in getting help to those in need. The leaky roof that threatened the opening of the Centre at Kingston, far from dampened her spirit. She makes things ‘happen’ with faith and confidence. Jade recognised a need, whilst researching black history month, the librarian admitted there was little demand for such literature; few ethnic groups used the service. She wanted to help celebrate and promote positive cultural identities and reduce isolation for disadvantaged individuals. ‘Melting Pot’ is a metaphor for society, inspired to develop a service which celebrates diversity and encourages unity, through the common interests of food and creativity; the MK Melting Pot was born proper in 2012. Sprouting from a yearly event begun in 2009, the new Kingston Centre offers cookery classes and other regular events like the upcoming Christmas crafts session. Through empowerment, self-belief, and developing a support network, it has helped people find relief from pain and gain new confidence. It is obvious how much Jade and her supporters care, by the many personal sacrifices to raise rent and ensure the needs of the community are met. They would like to encourage others to come forwards to volunteer, bring ideas, share skills and explore potential for business input.

This social enterprise founded by Dr Miriam Silver (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) brings a refreshing, forward-thinking approach in addressing some of society’s most hidden and saddening issues. Not constrained by red tape and bureaucracy enables them to dedicate energy where it is needed most, to empower and encourage those most at risk. Through individual and group therapy, clients who may routinely suffer in silence have been able to move toward a positive future. Focusing on families and children, they provide supportive therapies for issues such as isolation, parenting attachment, self-harm, abuse: Difficulties often directly related to poor care in childhood from both inside and outside the care system. Their vision is to raise awareness to a wider society so that these emotional problems can be recognised as separate from simpler, disruptive and challenging behaviours. Jade is encouraged by the use of mindfulness for restoring balance and a sense of security, specifically for children, who respond quickly to this technique. She has also introduced theatre and art as part of her varied therapy programme, aimed at encouraging children’s natural expression of emotions, challenging the suppressive influence of adults. The team nurture an atmosphere of trust, respect and empowerment; promoting a level playing field with no hierarchy nor formality. They have some creative and inspiring solutions to their clients problems and challenges.

a job club for redundant managers seeking a career change

Milton Keynes Executives Action is a job club that offers a unique service to mid-and senior-level managers who have been made redundant, or are looking for a career change. Its founder Melvin Hurley recognised from personal experience that existing services did not understand the problems facing unemployed executives and in 2011 set up MKEA to address this. Hurley explains that redundancy causes not only financial pressures and isolation; it also affects an individual’s ability to react and respond with their peers on a professional level. In addition, around 80 per cent of executive roles are allocated through business contacts, and, consequently, networking is an area which features strongly on their agenda. The company offers a three-pronged support programme: executive job search and response to redundancy; personal and professional development; plus alternatives to paid employment, such as setting up a franchise or business. It also boasts more than 70 guest speakers who have delivered sessions to members in their area of expertise, such as interim management or interview preparation and technique. MKEA has been extremely successful since it began, and out of the 206 members who have worked through the programme, more than 80 per cent have returned to employment. All of the activities are offered free of charge and meetings take place on Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings at Milton Keynes college.

humour is very simple

I’m a very positive, optimistic person, even if I’m not dressed as a clown I still try to keep that same attitude. I judge an act according to the result; a positive result means it is good, any negative result is, of course, negative. I’m trying to create a positive clown, someone who is cheerful, talks nicely to people (even if, they are not nice to me) to inspire something good, something positive. If parents see their child having a problem, it is their job to help the child to get over it. Every little victory is a stair the child steps on, getting higher and higher. The earlier this begins, the better. A child is growing, forming its character. I am just one of the experiences in their life, it is important they have a good experience with a clown. That is why I do my best to ensure that child’s experience is a good, positive, uplifting one; to feel like the clown is doing something nice for them.Starting an entertainment business there were certain factors (experiences, people, happenings) which conducted it. If those factors weren’t there, I wouldn’t have ended up here. Simple things create humour, when people laugh they enjoy themselves. Laughter is good, it gives one a sense of wellbeing when you release endorphins. One thing I can tell you is that it’s important to love people.
