Shouldham ews Volume 6 No.2 Spring 2008

Easy, riders

Pump up those tyres and stretch the old calf muscles – it’s

time for Shouldham’s annual bike ride again.

This year’s event will commence at 11am on Sunday 4th

May on the Village Green. We shall then, with consummate

ease, ascend Fincham hill, freewheel down it, and cross over

the main road to Boughton Road. By way of a handy farm

track, we’ll soon end up at the Spread Eagle pub at Barton

Bendish. The route will then take us to Beachamwell (the

Great Dane) before stopping for lunch at the Bedingfield

Arms in Oxborough, where Geoffrey Hipperson and his band

of helpers will barbecue burgers and sausages with relish

(and tomato ketchup).

The return trip will take us via Boughton pond (avoiding the

water), Wereham, Fincham and back to Shouldham. The ride

goes off at a gentle pace, avoids main roads, and is suitable

for all adults and older children. Entrants should pay on the

day: £2 per person, £5 per family, with proceeds going to vil-

lage funds.

Run your own stall

We’re in urgent need of volunteers to run stalls at this

year’s Village Weekend, to be held on the Green on Satur-

day July 5th (from noon to 4.30pm). All village organisa-

tions are invited to take a stall, which could be used to

raise funds (your organisation will keep all the proceeds).

However, we also need people to run games stalls – coco-

nut shy, splat the rat, human fruit machine – that help to

make the fete a successful event. Or perhaps you have

your own idea for a brand new game that will make

Shouldham famous? Anyone wanting to help should con-

tact John Dovey

(347802/[email protected]) or Keith Mat-

thews (347848/ [email protected]).

Team up for silly sports! It’s never too early to get in training for the silly

sports event to be held at this year’s Village

Weekend on Saturday July 5th. There will be two

contests, one for adults, one for children. Teams

of four should contact Sarah Ryan

(347457/[email protected]) or Helen Brown

([email protected]) for details.

Booting at Fincham

The new season of car boot sales is due to kick off on Sun-

day 27th April, from 1pm to 4pm at Fincham Memorial Hall

and Playing Field. Other sales will follow on the last Sunday

of the month. Pitches cost £5, or £6 for stalls in the hall. To

book one, phone Sue Westwood on 01366 340305. Stall-

holders are requested to arrive AFTER 11am (NOT BE-

FORE) to set up. Refreshments, at very reasonable prices,

will be available in the hall from 1pm. Funds raised will go

towards hall repairs and enabling disabled access to the hall

and playground.

A warm welcome from Shouldham Toddler Group

The Shouldham Toddler Group is open on Tuesday and Fri-

day mornings in Shouldham Village Hall, from 10am to

noon. It offers a chance for children to play and grown-ups

to relax, with drinks and snacks provided. Newcomers are

most welcome.

Yoga for charity

A charity yoga class is taking place at Shouldham Village

Hall on Wednesday 2nd April (9.45am-11.15am), with all

proceeds going to the Shouldham Toddler Group charity.

The group simply couldn’t exist without extra fundraising

efforts, so if you can, please help support this event and the

car boot sale to be held on Sunday 13th April at West Winch

(see Dates for your diaries). To book a yoga place, phone

Amy on 01366 380121. Tickets £5.

Shouldham yoga classes shape up well

There’s a welcome new addition to village life in Should-

ham, with weekly yoga classes now running every

Wednesday morning. Yoga uses a series of exercises to

leave the body fitter, more toned and looking slimmer.

Each class works with individual needs, providing

beginners with a gentle introduction and the more ad-

vanced with a more challenging workout. Classes are £5

for an hour and a half session, with all equipment pro-

vided. It’s suitable for all ages, so if you fancy toning up

for spring, contact Amy on 01366 380121 or at norfol-

[email protected].

Parish Council Open Meeting

There will be an Open Meeting of Shouldham’s

Parish Council taking place on Monday 14th

April in the Village Hall at 7.30pm. Please come

along if you have anything you would like to dis-

cuss.

Wed in Feb

Congratulations to Sylvia and Al Presslee of West-

gate Street, who got married on 12th February. The

event took place at King’s Lynn Registry Office, fol-

lowed by lunch at Strattons Hotel in Swaffham. It

was a lovely day, with Shouldham’s own Claire At-

terbury as one of the witnesses.

Carols around the tree

Once again this annual event was well attended, and lots

of villagers turned out on a very chilly evening to sing

popular carols. Thanks go to Pippa and the boys for very

welcome mulled wine, and to Jan and John for the lights.

A collection was made and £51 was donated to Riding

for the Disabled.

ews from Shouldham Football Club

The pitch has now been re-layed and re-seeded, so we

hope that next season all home games will be played in

Shouldham.

The under-10s and under-8s are looking for more players;

please contact Brian Lavender or Jeremy Hodges (01553

844071/07789 23791). Special congratulations go to the

under-15s, who have made it to the finals of the league

cup for the second year running!

The club’s presentation disco will be held in the Bowls

Club on May 10th at 7pm – all are welcome.

Exercise in Shouldham Village Hall

Hello, my name is Ray Watts. My wife Collette and I moved to Should-

ham in November 2006. We moved from Kent where I was a fitness

instructor and exercise specialist in Cardiac Rehabilitation. I shared my

time between the NHS Cardiac Rehab Group and my own classes in the

local Leisure centres, in Dover and Deal. I am qualified and certificated

by the BACR (British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation). I have to

re-sit my exams every three years, to maintain my qualification.

With the constant news about obesity and health risks in general, I was

wondering about the potential for a general fitness class in Shouldham’s

Village Hall. I propose to start perhaps one a week during the day (if

demand is there, then one in the evening too).

The class will be aimed at anyone from age 16 onwards. Initially there

will be no equipment used, because a series of carefully selected stand-

ing and seated exercises can be performed in sequence and to accommo-

date all levels of fitness. If the class is successful I would attempt to

provide equipment such as step-ups, light hand weights, rebounders and

the like.

The class will be at least an hour long, if you include a gradual warm

up, conditioning phase and gradual cool down. The beauty of these

classes is that individuals train at their own level and pace. So if you are

fit already, you will perform the exercises at a higher intensity than

those who are training for the first time.

I’m keen to see if there is any interest out there. If you are interested,

could you let me know by phoning me on 01366 348165 or email

[email protected]. I anticipate the classes (probably on a Thursday

morning) will cost approximately £2 per person. If there is enough in-

terest, I would hope to start things off in April.

Ring out the bells!

After the structural work of inserting two steel beams into the

tower of Shouldham’s All Saints’ Church was completed in De-

cember 2007, the bell-hanger returned in mid-January to drill the

bell frame and install the tie-rods. He also prepared the bed plates

to receive the new ball-bearings by which the bells are now sus-

pended. At the same time, members of our ringing team bolted all

the extra angle brackets on to the oak frame to ensure its complete

rigidity.

Finally, the bells returned from Whites’ (the Bell-hangers) works

in Oxfordshire in the last days of January. It was a pleasant surprise

to see all the bright blue painted fittings, as well as the beautifully

crafted, rebuilt wheels and many other accessories. The bells were

duly manoeuvred into their pits in one day, and all their fittings

added the next. The whole peal was tried out by the ringers at tea-

time on Monday 28th January and the results met with everybody’s

approval. They swing with very little effort and sound better be-

cause the two smallest bells (added in 1870) have been re-tuned to

match the four ancient heavier ones. All the bells have also been

accurately weighed – the smallest being 4cwt and 2lb (204kg) and

the largest 11cwt and 10lb (563kg).

It remains only to thank everyone who donated generously to fi-

nance the project, and particularly those local ringers who spent

many hours dismantling the old fittings and helping the bell-

hangers re-assemble the new components as the bells were re-hung.

Geoffrey Hipperson’s teleporter was an essential part of this opera-

tion and he is to be thanked for lifting the bells on and off the lorry.

The installation will now need much less continuous attention than

before, and this restoration should last well into the 22nd century.

Our ringers practise on Thursday evenings and are always pleased

to welcome visitors to watch the ‘action’. Please contact Brian Hul-

lah (01366 347814) if you would like to visit.
