Configuration Overview

The following sections document the major steps needed to configure the ShoreTel system with

the HP 1920/2920 series switches.

ShoreTel Configuration

There is no specific configuration required on the ShoreTel telephony system to interoperate with

the HP Ethernet switches, although you may need to configure the ShoreTel system for proper

QoS functionality. ShoreTel Director allows you to configure DiffServ or ToS Byte settings in the

Call Control Options page (see below for example). Please note that ShoreTel Director requires

the settings in decimal, thus a DiffServ setting of 46 corresponds to a setting of 184.

For Call Control Quality of Service, although legacy value of 104 is still supported but we highly

recommend to modify this value to 96 which corresponds to DiffServ setting of 24. Configuring

this parameter with the actual DiffServ or ToS Byte setting will result in undesired results. For

further assistance in configuring the DiffServ/ToS Byte parameter, please refer to ShoreTel’s

Administration Guide or contact ShoreTel Network Services.

In ShoreTel Connect Director, navigate to Call Control Options and verify the values for DiffServ

/ToS Byte under Voice Encoding and Quality of Service as well as Call Control Quality of Service

and Video Quality of Service settings as shown below in Figure 3.

HP Configuration

This following section describes basic configuration procedures for the HP MSR1000 Series

Router and HP 1920/2920 Series Switches.

HP Router Configuration

This Application note assumes basic router configuration has been completed. To connect to

ShoreTel Connect Cloud via MPLS network, you would also require HP MSR1000 Series Router.

The following router configuration should only be treated as an example and for any network

specific configuration questions, please contact ShoreTel Connect Cloud Support.

HP Switch Configuration (HP 2920)

This section describes the configuration for HP 2920 series switch to work with ShoreTel IP

Phones.

LLDP Configuration

The following section describes the configuration procedure for enabling LLDP on HP 2920 series

switches.

1. Log into the HP 2920 series switch using serial console and enter configuration mode of switch

HP-2920-24G-PoEP# configure

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)#

2. Configure LLDP basicTLV parameters by executing following commands in global mode:

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# lldp config all basicTlvEnable port_descr

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# lldp config all basicTlvEnable system_name

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# lldp config all medTlvEnable poe

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)#

4. Enable LLDP by executing following command.

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# lldp run

VLAN Configuration

The following section describes configuration procedure for creating default and voice VLAN on

HP switches. This Application Note assumes Switch uplink is further connected to layer 3 device

which will take care of routing or any other services like DHCP.

1. Log into the HP 2920 series switch using serial console and enter configuration mode of switch

HP-2920-24G-PoEP# configure

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)#

ShoreTel. Brilliantly simple business communications. Page 21 of 44

2. Configure default vlan by entering into vlan configuration mode and executing following

commands:

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# vlan 1

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# ip address dhcp-bootp

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# exit

Note: The last two steps will configure basic default VLAN. Now, if you would like to designate a

switch as a “Voice” only switch, please refer to step 3 otherwise go directly to step 4.

3. To convert existing default VLAN to “Voice” VLAN , please executing following commands :

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# vlan 1

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# name VOICE

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# voice

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# exit

4. To configure both data and voice vlan , configure new vlan and make that VLAN a Voice VLAN

by executing following commands:

1. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# vlan 10

2. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# name VOICE

3. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# voice

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-1)# ip address 10.40.15.1 255.255.255.0

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# untagged 1

4. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# tagged 3-24

5. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# exit

The above given procedure will create voice VLAN 10 with tagged ports 2-24 and untagged port

1 (Uplink to ShoreTel managed router on Connect Cloud). Any ShoreTel phone connected to

ports 3-24 will automatically move from default data VLAN to Voice VLAN with IP address from

network 10.40.15.x.

QOS Configuration

ShoreTel. Brilliantly simple business communications. Page 22 of 44

The following section describes the configuration procedure for enabling QOS on HP 2920 series

switches.

1. Log into the HP 2920 series switch using serial console and enter configuration mode of switch

HP-2920-24G-PoEP# configure

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)#

2. Configure QOS with expedited forwarding and Priority 7 in Voice VLAN by executing following

command:

6. HP-2920-24G-PoEP(config)# vlan 10

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# qos dscp ef

HP-2920-24G-PoEP(vlan-10)# exit

Sample Switch Configuration

The following is the sample configuration for a HP 2920 switch configured with only voice vlan:
