MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS CANVAS IN THE CLASSROOM As learners become leaders in the classroom, the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) has added an extra support for learners teachers and parents. Through Canvas, learners are able to see the tasks they need to complete, what is coming up in their classes, and keep track of what their days look like through the calendar. According to learner Logan Durant, Canvas “Keeps us organized.” Ethan Krohn stated, “I like that there’s a to do list so there is a list of assignments you need to get done and a list of what’s coming up.” In seventh grade, learners use the LMS to choose what time they want to go to each of their core classes. Students come in every morning to set their schedules. Naudia Herman-son said, “I like choosing my own classes so we don’t have to do the same ones at the same time every day.” Canvas also allows extensive feedback from teachers. Teachers are able to re-teach, provide encouragement, and give learners ideas to make their work better. Aralynn Johnson likes “that I’m still able to connect with my teachers after I turn in an assign-ment.” Eighth grade classes utilize Canvas as a way for students to work ahead on classes. Learners can complete an activity, and if they earn a score the teacher has set in Canvas, the next activity will automatically open for them. If they do not pass the activ-ity, the teacher will re-teach the activity so they can try again. Parents are able to use Canvas to view homework assignments, complete with instructions, grades, feedback, and upcoming events. On sick days or family vacations parents and learners can use Canvas to see what they are missing when the student is absent. From class discussions, to grading and self-paced instruction, Canvas provides a variety of support systems for our district to help learners take charge of their own learning.

PARKVIEW LEARNING CENTER NEWS

SCIENCE SCIENCE EVERYWHERE

JANUARY 2018

BIG RED’S CARDINAL WAY STORE Parkview introduced Big Red’s Cardinal Way Store to our learners in January. The Parkview learners receive Cardinal Cards when they are noticed following the Cardinal Way expectations during the school day. Learners can now “spend” their Cardinal Cards on both experiences and tangible items each week. Classrooms come to the “store” in the office and learners can decide to spend their cards on small-er items, save them for bigger experiences/items, and/or even put their name in for two of our monthly drawings. Big Red’s Cardinal Way Store gives all of our learners opportunity decide what they will do with their Cardinal Way cards.

Science and STEM activities can be found within the classrooms and hallways of Parkview. As part of the Lucy Calkins Units of Study Writing program, the 2nd grade learners are working on how to write lab reports. In order to write a lab report, they are getting the opportunity to develop their own science experiments and execute them. As a result, we can find 2nd grade learners throughout the hallways setting up their incline and distance experiments, collecting data, and making adjustments to their setups, and trying again.

Parkview adopted a new Science program this school year, and in January, the 1st grade learners were learning about sound. Learners were challenged to figure out how to make sound travel from per-son to person with two cups and some string. They needed to learn through trial and error how sound best travels along the string - when it was tight or when it was loose. These STEM experiments offer opportunities for our learners to col-laborate and problem-solve together. It is skills like these we need to continue to develop in our learners because they will be benefi-cial to them regardless of what career they decide to pursue as adults.
