Direct phone 201-390-6600 [email protected] PACHIM KETANIM FROM RABBI YUDIN: In Honor of Parshat Pinchas and the Grass Not Being Greener The grass is not always greener. The nature of man is to constantly look at what his neighbor has and believe that his neighbor's share is better than his. To avoid this from happening to the Jewish nation entering Eretz Yisrael, the Torah records (26:55) that "only by lot shall the land be divided," and further in the next verse, " al pi hagoral" - in accordance with the lot, shall one's inheritance be divided. The Gemara in Bava Basra (122a) describes the following: Imagine two boxes, one having 12 names, the other 12 territories in Eretz Yisrael. Elazar the Kohen Gadol first proclaimed the name of a tribe and a particular territory. Then someone picked a name from one box and a territory from the other box. Sure enough, it was exactly as Elazar had predicted. Then those pieces of lots were put back in the respective boxes, stirred each time and this procedure was repeated 12 times. I ask you, what's the mathematical possibility that a single name or territory would be pulled a second time? All this was orchestrated On High to avoid jealousy and envy among the tribes.
