Also known as Syscorp, Shin Yang Shipping was incorporated on 24th February 1983 and this was the birthing moment of Shin Yang’s many sister companies and subsidiaries and marked their growth into the huge conglomerate of companies that they are now. During the time of the wooden and metal boats revolution

in Miri during the 70s, SHIN YANG Shipping Sdn Bhd took

over Piasau Slipways Sdn Bhd at Piasau Industrial Estate.

This Company’s main operation was to build tugboats, barges, small

vessels and provide ship repairs services. For economic reasons and

growth, Piasau Slipways Sdn Bhd constructed a new shipyard in Kuala

Baram to cater for larger landing crafts and hopper barges to serve

the shipping needs to its related companies both domestically and

globally.

“By 1994, SHIN YANG Shipping Sdn Bhd had expanded their

shipping services through the establishment of Shinline Sdn Bhd and

subsequently, Thailine Sdn Bhd to serve the international shipping

sector,” he says, “With this in mind, the international plying Vessels are

mainly for Time/spot Carter, container carrier and bulk carrier under

the two companies. To facilitate this several Japanese built vessels

varying from 7000 to 10000t were purchased from the Japanese to

cater for Malaysia and Japan trade.”

In 1995 SHIN YANG Shipping extended her services to

International Shipping with the creation of Shinline Sdn Bhd. At the

same time Piasau Slipways also set out her new factories at Kuala

Baram which is where the present Piasau Slipways Sdn Bhd located.

Three years later in 1998, Thailine Sdn Bhd., one of the international

shipping’s megastars was formed.

Growing step by step together with the Malaysian Industry we spoke with Chief Executive Officer Captain Ting Hien Liong regarding his company.

fabrication, SHIN YANG Shipyard Sdn Bhd was established in the last

century in 1999 and commenced its operation in vessels construction,

repairs and fabrications for the local and international markets. Due

to this, the company is one of the first few companies to achieve

and obtain ISO 9002 certification in shipbuilding, maintenance and

related metal fabrication activities placing them firmly ahead of any

competition within the region.

“To date, the corporation has a total number of three hundred

vessels trading around the Asian region,” Captain Ting Hien Liong tells

us, “These include tugboats, a range of barges, coastal cargo vessels,

ocean going cargo vessels, chemical tankers, glue barges, piling

barges, anchor handling tug, supply vessels, offshore supply vessels

and offshore utility vessels.”

He adds that for the international markets, they also build supply

vessels, transportation vessel and patrol vessels for navy use in

particular for the UAE market.

New DevelopmentsProspects are bright for the Shin Yang Shipping Corp Bhd (Syscorp)

shipbuilding and ship-repair operations, as group financial controller

Richard Ling said late last year the group’s ongoing shipbuilding

contracts were worth RM762mil, with most of them secured in 2013,

meaning 2014 will be a period of action and consolidation.

DESB Marine Services, owned by Dayang Enterprise Holdings

Bhd, have already entered into a shipbuilding contract with Shin Yang

Shipyard Sdn Bhd for the construction of an offshore accommodation

workboat worth RM70mil.

Syscorp group is already currently building twenty five vessels

that will add to Shin Yang’s already substantial fleet of supply boats,

landing craft, tugs and barges.

“The order-book for new-build vessels can keep us busy for the

next two years. The group is constantly looking for new business and

bidding for new contracts,” Richard was quoted as saying.

These developments have extended the group’s shipbuilding

capacity after major upgrading works to its shipyards and it is due to

these same developments that they are now so heavily focussed on

building bigger vessels.

In 2013, Syscorp’s ship-repair business grew about 15% as more

ships were docked for maintenance and repair works benefitting

themselves from a wider array of services from Syscorp. As an

example, before the end of June 2013, the group had repaired 390

vessels, including 144 delivered in the fourth quarter.

The shipbuilding and ship-repair segment’s revenue in 2013

surged an incredible 70% to RM304.4mil from RM177.8mil in

2012 and the segment’s operational profit improved to RM7.6mil

from RM6.9mil and the credit falls directly on Syscorp’s shipping

operations as the main contributor to group revenue. Over and above

this the containerised cargo volume had risen more than 20% in the

months leading to 2014.
