Dear Sherwood Forest Families,
November is a time that welcomes seasonal changes that include family gatherings to express gratitude for the wonderful people and things in our lives – it’s a great time of year!
Thank you to our wonderful joint parent and staff Multicultural Night committee of Yelena Alexander, Ruth Taimanu, Magda Martin, Vanessa Rodriguez, Mayra Padilla, Lovi Harvey, Linda Hultman and Chris Wahlen! The event was held on November 16th and it was a huge success! Everyone had a great time exploring cultures from around the world, enjoying performances, ethnic foods, and the amazing ceremony showcasing the flags around our world! WHAT AN AMAZING EVENT!
Thank you to our families for attending our successful student-led conferences held November 8 and 9. We aimed for 100% attendance, and as of today – we have a 97.1% student-led conference attendance rate! Much thanks to our classroom teachers and staff for the time and effort spent preparing for these important conferences. It was so rewarding to see our student-scholars proudly sharing their work, explaining their IRLA levels and power goals, and taking their parents on classroom tours to show our new curriculum materials and explain
classroom routines and procedures. Our families looked very pleased!
A special thank you to all parents who completed the Educational Effectiveness Survey. We have had over 157 survey submissions and are looking forward to learning what our strengths and next steps will be in improving our school environment for every student-scholar and family. Thank you for sharing your perspective!
Sherwood’s team of exceptional educators is committed to giving your child our very best. We believe open, positive, two-way communication is essential for a good school-to-home partnership. There are multiple ways to stay informed about the activities, events, and learning that is happening at Sherwood: our monthly school newsletters, ConnectEd phone messages, student led
conferences twice a year, , and accessing information on our website: www.fwps.org/sherwoodforest.
Feel free to schedule an appointment with your child’s teacher or myself if we can help answer any questions that you may have. Thank you for entrusting your child to us!

Multicultural Night at Sherwood November 16, 2017
Sherwood Forest's annual Multicultural Night was a huge success! Over 350 people enjoyed samples of exotic foods, an impressive Flag Parade by Sherwood Forest students, amazing performances by our students and community members, craft booths from many different cultures and so much more! Our families shared their heritages by bringing artifacts from all over the world, creating displays and wearing ethnic costumes. It was a fabulous night full of culture, music, and delicious food. A very special thank you to all of our parent and staff volunteers, we could not have done it without all the help and support of our dedicated parents, PTA, AmeriCorps, and the many staff members who worked tirelessly to make this popular community building event a success. The planning committee looks forward to your feedback to make this event even bigger and better next year! Please send your feedback to Mrs. Hultman [email protected] (253-945-3810) or Mrs. Alexander [email protected] (253-945-3836).
The winter book fair will run December 4-8. It will be open during school hours Monday through Friday, and before and after the winter musical on Thursday December 7. You can also shop the book fair online November 26 through December 9. Any online purchases will be delivered to the school and sent home with your child.

VISION SCREENING
Dear Parents and Guardians:
This fall began the implementation of Washington
State Law - WAC 246-760. The major change
included the requirement for “near vision” screening
in schools for K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th grade students
as well as distance screening. “Near vision acuity"
means the ability of the human eye to see objects
with clarity at close range. "Distance vision" means
the ability of the eye to see images clearly at a
calibrated distance.
The Federal Way Nurses used a handheld Photo-
Screener device to measure vision along with the
typical vision screens used in some situations in the
past. The new photo-screener allowed for more
accurate and complete screening for distance and
near vision issues including the following:
· Hyperopia (farsightedness)
· Myopia (nearsightedness)
· Astigmatism (blurred vision)
· Anisometropia (unequal refractive power)
· Anisocoria (unequal pupil size)
· Strabismus (eye misalignment)
This was a screening only. You will receive a notice
for referral to a vision specialist if the screening
results note anything but a “pass”. If you received a
vision referral, please make an appointment with an
eye doctor. Your family doctor can only do a general
screening, as we do, so we recommend making an
appointment with an eye doctor.
If you have questions, please contact your school
nurse.
Thank you,
Federal Way School District Nurses
