Dear Friends,

In the long history of Sherwood Forest, 2018 is a year to remember.

The Board of Directors and staff were working hard to complete our Way More Than Camp capital campaign. The camp facilities were being transformed by the construction of seven, yes seven, new buildings. And it was Rachel Tutwiler’s first summer in her new role as our sixth camp director.

To house all of the campers during construction, programs had to be adapted. That meant cabins for our youngest campers who attended camp in the first week of a long session would be used by older campers. Our Adventure and Journey campers all started their summers on out of camp trips. By the time they had completed their

trips, the Mini Camp program had ended, and so they had cabin space. Very crowded cabin space.

While these changes in camp required everyone to learn to adapt, it was surprising to me how relatively quickly campers and staff adjusted. Challenges like these are part of life and our campers and staff got plenty of opportunity to discover just how flexible they can be.

When we began this first ever multi-million dollar capital campaign, there was a lot of hope for its success, but also some trepidation that Sherwood Forest had bitten off more than it could chew. Imagine how thrilled we were when we reached our $6.2 million dollar goal well ahead of schedule. Imagine how incredible our decision to stretch for an additional $1 million dollar target. Then you can probably imagine how over the moon delighted and excited we felt when we met that goal!

And when I say “we” I mean you too. You have been with Sherwood Forest and our campers all along. Your support, your encouragement, your belief in our work and the promise of our campers- all that you bring to Sherwood Forest- makes Sherwood Forest possible.

You have my deepest admiration and heartfelt thanks.

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM MARY

1st and 2nd Grade

3rd Grade

6th and 7th Grade

4th and 5th Grade

Each year brings something different for campers at Sherwood Forest as they build upon the skills they learned the year before. Our Quest and Supports for Success programs are designed to reduce summer learning loss, foster a love of learning, and build the soft skills that research has shown are critical to academic achievement, high school graduation, and success in post-secondary education. Take a look at what our programs looked like in 2018 and how we continue to work with our campers as they grow.

Mini campers spent 5 days learning the ropes of camp life as they developed independent living skills. They moved in small groups through different activities, allowing them to discover what camp has to offer.

During their first 28-day session, campers developed a love of learning by participating in our award winning 3rd Grade Book Club. Kids read either Hatchet or Zarah the Windseeker and engaged in hands-on activities related to the book, like fire building, fishing and more!

In 2018, we launched our STEM Program for 4th and 5th grade campers. Participants explored concepts of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math by engaging in hands-on activities in camp’s natural atmosphere.

6th grade marks the start of the Leadership Training Program, which helps campers recognize and develop their individual strengths. 6th graders focused on identifying their leadership styles. In 7th grade, campers utilize these skills as a team to accompish a large project together as a group – either planning and producing an all-camp musical production or a 100+ mile backpacking and canoing trip.

OUR PROGRAMS

In 2018, we had to limit the number of Mini Campers due to construction.

50% of campers saw an increase in intrinsic motivation to read

Thanks to our Way More Than Camp campaign, we now have a designated space for STEM at camp.

In 2018, 7th grade Art Trek campers led a production of Shrek, Jr. during Girls Camp

Leadership trips took place on the Ozark Trail and National Scenic Riverway on the Current River

70% of campers saw an increase in vocabulary scores

8th and 9th Grade

10th - 12th Grade

After developing independence and teamwork skills, campers put them into action as they planned extensive trips. 8th graders focused on making an impact in their local community as they traveled across Missouri to visit colleges and participated in service projects. 9th graders expanded their focus to impacting the national community as they planned and executed a 12-day trip to Washington, D.C., visiting college campuses, historical sites, and volunteering along the way.

After completing the Leadership Program, campers can join Supports for Success, our program sequence to further support our students in realizing their unique dreams as they transition into post-second-ary education and careers. Through this program, teens spent time engaged in their communities, were exposed to career/college related programming, and strengthened social-emotional skills.

2018 marked the first year that we had 12th graders in the program and we marked their accomplishments at our first Decision Day event where campers announced their post high school plans.

Year-Round Learning

Through Quest, our program for 1st — 9th graders, we offer weekend meetings during the school year where our campers are able to build their skills from the summer through experiential trips.

In 2018, we partnered with the World Bird Sanctuary and the Endangered Wolf Center to offer our program participants an opportunity to connect with camp friends while continuing to learn through hands-on activities.

Campers also spent time at camp over “Trash Bash” weekends where they volunteer their time helping prepare camp for the summer through a variety of projects balanced with fun activities at their “home away from home”.

93% of 9th graders indicated having greater problem solving confidence

100% of 8th graders reported being more responsible after their camp experience

“I want to be a teacher. Being at camp helped

me realize this passion. Supports for Success is

teaching me how to get there.”-Monica, 17

WAY MORE THAN CAMP

2018 marked the completion of Sherwood Forest’s Way More Than Camp campaign. When the campaign started, we set a goal of raising $6.2 million. Thanks to the generosity of donors, volunteers, and the greater community, we not only reached our goal, but by the close of the campaign in August of 2018, we raised over $7.2 million!

We held a Groundbreaking Ceremony at camp in April 2018 that marked the beginning of construction. In order to have the buildings ready for use by summer 2019, construction continued through our 2018 camp session. During the summer, camp operated as usual despite the disruption as kids enjoyed their final meals in the old dining hall and garnered excitement for their return to the new buildings at camp next summer.

The Way More Than Camp campaign will make it possible for us to welcome more young people at camp each year thanks to a new village, dining hall, and new and improved learning spaces which allows our program to continue to evolve and have a deeper impact for our kids. The endowment fund will not only provide an additional income source to support programs and operations, but will also serve as the foundation for future planned giving efforts.

We are so thankful for everyone who helped make this possible! The following list includes all donors who contributed to Way More Than Camp, whether that gift was made in 2018 or in previous years.

Revenue

In 2018 Sherwood Forest successfully completed a $7.2M capital campaign. Although overall support decreased slightly as our Board and Staff focused on the completion of the capital campaign, programs support remained strong and diversified: 22% United Way, 28% Individual Contributions, 18% Corporate & Foundation Grants, 10% Special Events, 14% Program Fees, 3% Government, 1% In-Kind, and 2% Other.

With the expansion of our facilities, the Finance Committee worked hard this year to evaluate our future revenue needs to allow us to fully implement our programs as envisioned in our Strategic Plan.
