A Note From Our President Curt McCarty

Wow! Eleven new members to our church family in the past couple of months. What a blessing to see SOTH moving in a growing direction. Welcome to all the new families, you cer-tainly enhance our worship service. Many of you have already involved yourselves in the oper-ation of the church. Your new energy, efforts, and thoughts will make us a stronger congrega-tion. Welcome and thank you. Along with good things happening this month, how about the great field day we held here for the Crossville Christian School. By all reports it was a smashing success with lots of fun and pizza for all. Word is the kids would like to make this an annual event. A very nice outreach into our community and a fun thing to do.

As you read this the consecrated steward program has already begun. Our stewardship committee has worked very hard on this program which we actually began a few years back. This is the conclusion of the program and believe me it has meant a lot of work for your com-mittee. We owe them a lot of thanks. Fred Mundt is a regional speaker for this program and we are very fortunate to have his help in this program. Please mark your calendars for the June 11th congregational meeting. This meeting will be held between services on that Sunday. If you have any thoughts that you would like the con-gregation to consider now is your time to let us know. As always, if we know your thoughts and concerns we can make better decisions. Your servant in Christ,

    Curt

Save this date, July 30th!!! The Youth Group will again sponsor an Ice Cream Social on the last Sunday of July. So please mark you calendar for July 30th after second service. Instead of donuts, let’s support the youth and join in them for ICE CREAM!!

    Anniversaries Birthdays

Last month we missed some new mem-bers special day!

James Bandazewski’s birthday was May 14th.

Joe & Courtney Marko’s celebrated their 4th anniversary on May 18th.

On April 23 we experienced a deluge of 5 inches of rain. Unfortunately, it was the scheduled day of the

Shepherd’s Little Flock annual golf outing. Typical of the wonderful group of SLF supporters, everyone (who was still afloat) turned out for the dinner and festivities at the multi-purpose room in Fairfield Glade. As usual, we had a great dinner thanks to Diane Mundt & the crew of teachers from the daycare. We feasted on pulled pork sandwiches from the Flying Pig, baked beans, coleslaw from Doug Mundt, and chips with a variety of drinks. Marilyn Halas, Sabrina’s mom, provided beautiful, yummy, homemade cupcakes. Prizes were distributed by drawing names, but everyone received something. Lots of laughs and fun! Nineteen teams signed up for the outing, including three 90 year olds. 34 tee sponsors and 13 donors of vary-ing dollar amounts, items, or services also contributed to the success of the fundraising outing. We are so very grate-ful for the support of all the participants, sponsors, donors, and volunteers. The banner, listing our tee sponsors, is hanging in front of the daycare As a result of a lot of work from many volunteers the golf outing netted $6,878. 87! The Lord is so good! All monies are designated for the operation of the daycare. We are humbly grateful and appreciative.

Over the last year and a half SOTH has been blessed to receive many new members. On Sunday, April 30 a pot-luck dinner was held and 25 members who have joined during that time were given a formal warm welcome. Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Attached with this note is a flyer for your use in the hope that you and your congregational members will join us for a special 500th Reformation celebration on Saturday, June 24th. We are eager to share with you a visit by Rev. A. Trevor Sutton, author of " Being Lutheran" and " Why Should I Trust the Bible". We chose that date, as it celebrates the date of the presentation of the Augsburg Confession and also the later signing of the Book of Concord. Please note the session titles; as Pastor Sutton has concurred to highlight these events via his presentations. We particularly want to ask you to encourage Confirmation and post-Confirmation teens to come and share time with other young Lutherans in the area, while experiencing a few hours of the truths of our faith! Their fee is NO CHARGE. We would appreciate a headcount call to our office by June 20! If you would like more information or materials to publicize this event please call the Church Office:

Consecrated Stewards Board of Stewardship, Nancy Burns Chair

Consecrated, Lord, To Thee Consecration Sunday is

    June 4, 2017

Please note: The only service on this Sunday will be at 10:30 AM. Mark your calendar for this celebration.

HOW COULD I BE A VISITING FRIEND? I don't drive, I don't like meetings, AND I don't know very many people!

“Visiting Friends” have some members who participate in this ministry but have never attended a monthly meeting, maybe they don’t drive or feel they don’t know many people. But what they can do, is care about fellow members who may be hurting and just send a card to let them know they are not forgotten. Sharing a call or card with someone you don’t know is an opportunity to share God’s love. Visiting Friends meet once a month on the second Monday, at 10:00 am in the first classroom. Our mis-sion is to see that all members challenged by loneliness, health, or medical problems receive a call, a card or a visit each month. As stated before some members of this team are unable to attend meetings etc. but want to make a contribution to fellow church members. All we ask is that you keep a record on a contact sheet we provide. This is important, because we as a group and congregation want everyone to know we care about each other and no one is forgotten. We have a core group of members who faithfully visit our shut-ins and who make many calls and send cards. We could always use more volunteers in this important ministry. Your service would be not only be ap-preciated, but you will find a special peace knowing you are reaching out to someone in need. Our meetings last an hour, we open and end with prayer. After that, it's purely a discussion making sure everyone on our list has been contacted. Your sister in Christ, Toni McCarty

A note from the Editor: Occasionally the Staff will be introducing you to one of the ministries we have here at SOTH. These are some of the ministries/committees that do not have a regular monthly article in the Staff. Their quiet, behind the scenes contributions are vital to the core of our church but you may not know what they do or even that they exist. Our first contributor is “Visiting Friends”, chairman Toni McCarty.

    Property Guys John Wedlund, chairman

It is great to have guys and gals on the Board of church property, plus the volunteers that help us time to time. They all come with their own talent and experience. Not to mention their volunteer spirit and commitment to our Lord and Savior. I can’t tell you how much it means to our church to have members give of their time and labor to help save costs on our maintenance, repair, and construction needs. However, there are times when we have to hire contractors to get some projects done. Just recently we hired Jamie Dutch, a pressure-cleaning contractor, to get rid of the black sub-stance forming on the entire church building roof. Jamie did a good job. The roof looks like new again. Where does that black stuff come from? We also hired Action Heating and cooling Co. to help solve a problem with a cooling sys-tem in the Family Life Center building. We always thank the Lord for giving us the opportunity and ability to serve.

When you wake up Tuesday morning and you are a property guy, you have no idea what adventure lies ahead for the day!!!! Thank you guys and dolls for all you do to keep SOTH so nice.

    Try it, you’ll like it!!!

One of our most important ministry’s here at Shepherd of the Hills is our Greeters. It doesn’t seem like it should be that important does it? I will tell you from our personal experiences at other Lutheran churches, SOTH is one of the most welcoming. It is not by accident. We are a very friendly, caring congregation and that comes through to anyone who visits our church.

Now, knowing how important it is to have greeters at our doors wel-coming members and visitors alike, PLEASE come forward and sign up to meet and greet once a month, or whenever you are available. There is a sign up sheet in the Gathering Place.

It is time for others, not just the same volunteers, to step forward.

We NEED on our WELCOMING COMMITTEE!

Save this Date, July 23rd! “Jesus loves children”

Our next Jesus Loves Children event will be on Sunday, July 23rd. The theme will be “Jesus, our Good Shepherd”. Save the date and spread the Word!

YOUR MAILBOX MOST LIKELY HAS MOVED AND THAT’S A VERY GOOD THING!!!

Each time we accept new members the mailboxes are reorganized.

Your name is ABOVE your box. Please remember to check your box often!.

A simple way to ease our budget is as easy as signing up for KROGER COMMUNITY REWARD DOLLARS !

Last year SLF was awarded over $500 from just 22 people. This year we have only 18 but would love to have many more. If you are a plus card member just go to Kroger.com website & click on Community. Then click on In Your Community. Scroll down to Community Rewards. Click on Enroll now.

You may either re-enroll, sign in or create an account. The site will ask you who you want to reward. Put in Shepherd’s Little Flock or the number 15029. You must re-enroll each Fall. These rewards come from Kroger and do NOT affect your personal rewards. Every little bit helps. Please take the time to sign up and tell your friends and family, too. Thanks so much.

Senior Singles will be meeting on Friday, June 9th at the Beef and Barrel Restaurant on West Avenue at 11:15am. There is a signup sheet out on the counter in the Gathering Room. (Note to all old and new members alike: Senior Singles is a group, of widowed, divorced, never married, of any age members of our congregation or not, that meet for lunch in even months on the second Friday for fel-lowship and a good time.)

On Friday, June 16th at 11:30 am, we will be partnering with SLF and helping to present their Father’s Day celebration.

The Caregiver Coffee Hour is scheduled for Wednesday, June 21st from 2pm to 3pm in the Gathering Room. No need to sign up for this event. Church members and guests are always WEL-COME!

Calling all avid BINGO players!!! Mark your calendars!!! Sunday, June 25th the Senior Ministry will be partnering with the Youth Ministry in hosting a Bingo Ses-sion and Brunch after the second service. Our official hours will be 11:30am to 1:30pm. Brunch will be served first and we will start the Bingo session anytime you are ready. We can eat and play at the same time if you wish. The signup sheet is out! Come join us for a fun afternoon!

Special thanks to Ruth Worshik and all the members of the Senior Ministry Board who helped to make the SLF Mother’s Day celebration a memorable event. Also, to Ingeli Matthews for filling in and hosting fellowship on May 14th.

The National LWML surpassed its 2015-2017 Mission Goal of 2 million dollars by nearly $100,000! Thanks were given to God by National LWML President, Patti Ross, for all the mite offerings re-ceived which allowed mission grants to be funded and Gospel outreach to be completed. The over-age of $97,904.23 will be used for the 2017-2019 Mission Goal. Thank you to all of OUR faithful and generous mite box feeders; YOU helped to make it happen!

The ladies of the LWML, along with many other of our church members, put on another fabu-lous Fling this year! The Gathering Place was packed, you could feel the excitement in the air, and giddy laughter rose to the rafters! Bling flew off the tables at an amazing rate! We grossed a profit of $1,216.50! The two Thrivent Seed Money Grants paid all of our expenses, so the majority of that money will go to mites and missions. Thank you to EVERYONE who helped make the Fling a smash-ing success! Many hands make light work, and we couldn’t have had a better group of volunteers and supporters than the ones you can find at SOTH!

The Plateau Pregnancy Baby Bottle Drive is in full swing! If you haven’t gotten a baby bottle yet, you can find them in a tub near the mailboxes. Fill it with whatever your heart directs, whether it be coins, cash or a check. Know that each donation to their work could help an uncertain young family choose life today, knowing they will receive the support they will need to provide for their child tomorrow.

The Summer Quarterly LWML meeting is set for July 15th. The program isn’t set yet, but we have a lead on a possible speaker. Stay tuned for more information .

Our next Mission in Motion Servant Event is tentatively planned for Friday, July 21st. We’ll be preparing and serving lunch at the Bread of Life Mission. If you are a Thrivent member, please con-sider letting us use one of the two Action Team Seed Money grants you qualify for every year, to purchase the necessary supplies. That keeps more of our funds available to turn around and donate back into the community. Please speak to me or let Diane Mundt know if you would be so inclined. And now, for some exciting big, big news: Wedding bells are soon to be ringing for our “adopted daughter!” Caitlin is engaged and will be getting married on June 28th! The story is too long and com-plicated to retell in the space I have available here, but watch for a detailed update to be out soon. Ohh Boy - what a story! Now would be a great time to send Caitlin a card or email! I’ll have stamps available before and after Bible study on Sunday mornings. There are many avenues a Consecrated Steward can take here at SOTH. The LWML offers many op-portunities to serve. Come be a part of one of them!

Our choirs are on summer vacation! In the next few months please prayerfully consider joining either one of our choirs. We welcome anyone willing to serve the Lord and make a joyful noise! You just need to be com-mitted to practice once a week and play or sing on an occasional Sunday. We do our best to work around everyone’s travel plans.

You do not need to be able read music to participate in bells, but your love and enthusiasm for hymns will bring you the confidence to learn.

Shepherd’s Little Flock Sabrina Gunderson, Director

Noteworthy News – I will be attending a Lutheran Accreditation Conference in Memphis at the end of this month. We will be going over the new rules for accreditation. I have been fortunate to have been on 2 accreditation teams since working for Shepherd’s Little Flock. I learned a lot about the different schools and process on becoming Lutheran Accredited. I have been blessed with meeting some wonderful people and have enjoyed seeing how different schools and daycares are being run and operated. What’s Happened – We had a wonderful turn out for our Mother’s Day celebration that the senior ministry put on. We are so thankful for the support and active church partnership. We are so thankful so many of our mother’s were able to come. We had almost all of the mother’s in the pre-school and over half from the transition room. What a wonderful turn out!!

What’s Happening – We will be having a Father’s Day celebration on Friday, June 16th at 11:30 a.m. at the fellowship hall. We are looking for any men from the church that would like to join us. Just call and let Sabrina in the SLF office know. We will be putting the “School Bus Supply List” up soon. The list of supplies are for all year and we take the funds that we raise and go the teacher store in Memphis while we are there for the Lutheran Early Childhood Conference. The teacher store gives us a discount and we do not pay for shipping and handling. We are able to purchase more supplies that way. The preschool room has asked the K.I.C.K. to join us in a free congregational car wash on Tues-day, June 27th from 9 till 11 with a grilled lunch after. If you would like to have your car washed by some very special children bring your car, truck or vehicle to the back parking lot during the morn-ing. Focus on the Flock– Celebrating a birthday this month: We Wish Happy Birthday and God’s blessings to: Carlotta will be 3 on the 3rd Charlie will be 4 on the 19th Olivia will be 3 on the 6th Fawn will be 4 on the 27th Khaidyn will be 3 on the 11th Colt will be 4 on the 28th Creative Curriculum –

Reminders – We will be having the 4th of July Parade on Friday, June 30th at 9:30 a.m. Plan to join

us for our country’s birthday celebration.

SUNDAY Adult Bible Class 9:15 AM

Our Bible Study Focus Pastor Andrew is leading us in a

reading of Dr. Luther's Large Cate-

chism. It is not really that large,

and it's very readable. In this Chris-

tian classic, Dr. Luther does an ex-

    cellent job summarizing the foun-

dations of our faith. This project

    was chosen because 2017 marks

    the 500th anniversary of the

    Protestant Reformation. The discus-

sions will be held during our normal Sunday School hour beginning

in February. All are invited. Please let Judy know if you need a

    copy of the Large Catechism.
