President’s Report
John De Lucia
The cold weather is well and truly upon us as can be seen by the drop in numbers attending
the club on Wednesday night and Sunday morning.
Once again, can members PLEASE observe the 5km speed limit into the grounds starting
from West Beach Road. I am sure that nobody wants to be responsible for any near misses
or worse.
I am very pleased to report that the club has entered into a sponsorship arrangement with
Noahs Crossing Veterinary Clinic. The clinic is located on Hayman Road, Lewiston and any
member that is thinking of attending this vet for their pets needs are urged to get a key tag
first which is available from the Shepherd Shop. By using this key tag, the club will receive a
percentage back and you will receive a special rate when you visit the clinic. More
information regarding this can be found in this edition of the Shepherd News.
There is a list of calendar dates printed in the Shepherd News which I encourage you to take
note of and make a note in your diary of special events that you do not want to miss. It is
your responsibility to remember dates of events and meetings and not that of the club.
Our Balmead Shied Trial will be held on Sunday 11 August. Any member wishing to help out,
whether in the canteen, stewarding, setting up/packing away etc is encouraged to speak
with either Ian Cooke, Jeff Hartshorne or myself. Your help and assistance would be greatly
appreciated.
The club was saddened by the recent passing of two of our long serving members, Marie
Hartshorne and Rae West. Marie will be well remembered by members as the lady who sat
under the veranda watching husband and instructor, Jeff, training their dogs. Rae was a long
standing life member of our club who helped the club and husband, Doug for several
years. On behalf of all members, I extend our condolences to Jeff Hartshorne and Doug
West and their families.

CLUB MEETINGS
The recent meeting to discuss the NBC Agenda was publicised contrary to complaints made
by members. The listing below is an except below from June Shepherd News and a screen
dump from the Club website of the Calendar of Events. The onus is on the each mem-
ber to note dates of interest in your diaries and then attend meetings.
June 1st Saturday Agility Dog Club Double Trial am/pm. 8th Saturday GSDC SA 70th Championship Show.
9th Sunday GSDC SA 71st Championship Show.
10th Monday Falcon GT Club Meeting.
17th Sunday Golden Retriever Club "Meeting". 22nd Saturday GSDC SA Endurance Test. 28th Friday GSDC SA RE: NBC Meeting.
Congratulations to all winners that competed in our last two Championship shows. The
judges Jan Braham and Rod Vernon where very well received by all competitors.
Recently, in the media there is an article on responsible management of cats & dogs. They
are focusing their investigating to ensure all owners are providing proper identification and
vaccination of their pets. Therefore I would like to stress to all of our members the
importance of making sure that all of our breeders around our state register
their dog through a National Microchip Database. I cannot stress the importance of this in
the event the dog goes missing, the owners/owners can be contacted.
I am aware we have had a number of people (new owners and vets) expressing concern
where they have discovered that although chipped, some puppies are not being registered
on a recognised database. It is a reasonable expectation of a person buying a microchipped
pet that the point of the chip is to identify and reunite their pet with them if it is lost or
gets out. A breeder, losing a dog at an interstate show would hope the same thing!
Dogs SA are not responsible for reuniting lost dogs, as they have neither the resources
nor the 24 hours access that the databases do. Their function is to put the microchip on a
pedigree for ANKC record keeping only.
When tattooing was introduced, the GSDCA and member clubs like ours were leading the
way in ensuring our dogs were traceable and remained our responsibility. As the technolo-
gy has changed, unlike our interstate sister clubs, where legislation ensures any chipped
puppy is registered to a national 24hr 7 day a week database, we in SA have not kept up
with the systems in place to ensure this continues. We have an ongoing responsibility to
our animals and their owners to ensure this takes place.
We should bear in mind that breeders who are not having club officers chip their puppies
are going to vets who are ensuring under their own codes of conduct that puppies are be-
ing registered on a national database. Potentially this could be seen as a disadvantage to
those breeders not registering thepuppies.
You may not be aware that SA and NT are now the only states which do not have spe-
cific micro chipping laws covering thisissue.
Let’s never forget that a microchip’s fundamental purpose is to positively identify and to
reunite animals with their owners, not just to tick a box on an ANKC pedigree.

25 August 2013 Ms Issy De.lucia
29 September 2013 Mr Andrew O’Loughlin
27 October 2013 Mr Jamie Phillis
Our standards of breed welfare have always been the very best, however on this issue; it
could be perceived that we are falling behind. There is no doubting that it is a breeder's
responsibility to ensure their puppies are given the best chances of being returned to
breeder or owner if lost or abandoned, and to minimize the chance of euthanasia due to
lack of identification.
Some SA breeders already use a prepaid form and get the puppy buyers to fill it out at the
point of sale, as well as listing themselves as back up contacts, thereby doubling the chance
of getting the dog home safe. Once all puppies are sold they post the prepaid forms to the
database, ensuring they are recorded nationally. The new owner is forwarded a certificate,
proving their puppy is registered on the database. The cost of these forms can be as low as
$7-8 each.
Did you know that anyone finding a chipped animal can check the
www.petaddress.com.au website to see which database the animal is registered to? Once
they contact the database, it becomes the database company’s responsibility to reunite
owner and pet.

Brad Armstong After a courageous fight, Brad Armstrong lost his battle with cancer on 21 June 2013. He was only 41 years old. Brad was a member of the Club and the very proud owner of Ch Leppsdorf Loui Armstrong, the Bronze Medal winning dog at the Queensland National Show. Loui was Brad’s pet and he said a wonderful companion and support, particularly during his long illness. Our thoughts and best wishes go to his wife, Judy, the boys Dale and Joshua, and the beautiful little girls, Tessa and Tylah. Such a lovely family – just so very sad.

Marie Hartshorne
Marie Hartshorne will always be remembered for her tireless support of
Jeff – both around the trials and sitting under the veranda at the club.
Marie loved to watch Jeff train the dogs and she formed many a friendship
with other members who would also sit under the veranda and talk ‘dogs’.
Marie also had helped in the canteen by way of serving at club functions
and helping out on training days. Her help was indeed appreciated.
Our deepest condolences to, Jeff and the dogs - who will especially miss,
Marie.

Social Report Bev Mayne
Rae was involved in the Club as Social Convener, Show Manager & many
other areas, her involvement in the Club was supported by Doug who she
convinced should be on Committee as well, and was awarded Life Mem-
bership of the Club.
Beautrae Kennels was very successful, and Rae never wanted to go on
holidays because of all the animals she accumulated, but was at a dog
show every week, both locally and interstate, Rae was known for her familiar
cough from outside the ring whenever one of her beloved Shepherds was
exhibited to get their ears up, and this was probably the beginning of double
handling!
Rae passed peacefully with both her Daughter Kelley & her husband Doug at
her side on the 4th of
July 2013 at the age of 71 years.
Rest in peace Blondie.

volved using a TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) to release the tension within a point, following by stretching the affected muscle group. Other ways to treat trigger points include acupuncture therapy and massage.
Acupuncture therapy
Acupuncture mainly works in two ways to control pain and treat muscle injuries. Acupuncture can manipulate blood flow towards or away from muscle. When an injury has just occurred, we want less blood flow towards the muscle to reduce the inflammatory response. When it is an older injury, we want more blood flow towards the muscles to bring in nutrients to aid healing. As discussed earlier, acupuncture can also be used to treat trigger points.
Home Management:
Resting
Each individual should have sufficient resting period in between working. Resting allows the body system to repair muscle damage, to metabolise toxins built up from overloaded working (lactic acids), and in particular to avoid repeated trauma to injured muscles that are still undergoing their healing process.
Heat and cold therapy
Straight after an injury, cold therapy (ice pack) should be applied on injured muscle, this restricts blood flow to the affected area and reduces the inflammatory response and swelling. In contrast, heat therapy (hot water bottle/wheat bag) should be used in chronic cases to promote healing by bringing blood flow to injured muscles.
Massage
Gentle massage along with heat therapy on muscles aids blood circulation and partially releases tension within a trigger point. Owners can seek advice from a Veterinary Physiotherapist or Chiropractor on some simple ways to massage their animals at home. In addition to reducing pain from releasing muscle tension, massage can also promote better performance.

Pain management in large breed dogs with
muscle injuries from working It is common for large breed dogs to have
some degree of musculoskeletal issues
from working. Major injuries include
dogs that have had a fall, are traumatised
or appeared lame after working. Minor
injuries can occur from repeated forceful
muscle contractions and twisting from
running, fast turning and jumping, which
does not cause a problem at the begin-
ning, but cumulatively results in chronic
muscle pain and reduce in flexibility in
older age. In this article, we will discuss different aspects of pain management in working
dogs experiencing muscle injuries.
Medical Therapy:
Owner should seek medical advice as soon as possible after any suspected muscle injuries. Dogs that experience acute muscle injury will require anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce swelling and pain. In severe cases, one may see muscle spasm post injury or haematoma formation. Chronic pain from previous injuries or exhausted muscle that did not have enough of a rest period will benefit from pain relief medication. However, the cause of chronic pain needs to be addressed; otherwise the medication will only be of temporary relief.
Alternative Therapy:
Trigger point therapy
Trigger point is a bundle of contracted muscle forming a knot, it is irritable and painful on compression. Trigger point usually forms from an insult or when there is a lack of muscle stretching. Hence working dogs are quite prone to have early trigger point development due to muscle damaged from lots of running and jumping. Once a trigger point is formed, it remains contracted until treatment is performed. These trigger points can start to devel-op as a puppy and increases in number as the dog gets older. There are 2 types of trigger points; active and latent points. Active trigger points are points painful enough to cause a problem affecting routine daily life. For example, lameness. Latent points are more com-mon and exhibit as underlying chronic pain; many dogs with chronic pain where diagnostic tests cannot find any underlying cause will have trigger points.
