The city of Shenyang dates back to 300BC, when Qin Kai, a general
of the State of Yan, established the city of Houcheng. It took its
modern name – or something close to it, Shengjing – in 1625, when it
became the capital for the Qing Dynasty. The Qing dynasty, also
known as the Manchu, would go on to rule China as a whole from
1644 to 1912 – an extraordinary span of almost three centuries that
formed the map of the modern Chinese state.
The area around Shenyang is where it all began, and the Qing era of
cultural effervescence is reflected in many historic places and
artefacts today.

Shenyang has a rich cultural history. It is the birthplace of one of
China's greatest imperial dynasties and was the imperial capital
during the reign of two emperors. It is considered one of the most
important historical and cultural cities in China.
Shenyang dialect is similar to the other Northeastern dialects and also
to the national standard of Mandarin, Putonghua, but is known as a
form of Dongbeihua and has a wide range of vocabulary that is not
part of the country's official language. As Shenyang dialect is mutually
intelligible with most forms of Mandarin, some people prefer to
characterize it as an "accent" rather than a different "dialect."

Northeastern Chinese cuisine is a style of Chinese cuisine in
Northeast China. While many dishes originated from Manchu
cuisine, it is also heavily influenced by the cuisines of Russia,
Beijing, Mongolia, and Shandong. It relies significantly on
preserved foods and large portions due to the region's harshwinters and relatively short growing seasons.

The city's main urban area is located to the north of Hun River,
formerly the largest tributary of the Liao River proper and often locally
referred as the city's "mother river".
Shenyang's metropolitan area traditionally consisted of the 5 small
inner urban districts, surrounded by 4 larger outer suburban districts,
and accompanied by 4 rural counties on the north and west sides.
