TODA Y'S EVENTS

The Shell Brighton National Speed Trials are back again intheir full glory. Again we welcome the very popular Dragstersover a quarter of a mile. These will be run singly at the end ofthe Meeting. These machines are buill with only one purpose inmind, i.e., to cover the quarter mile in as short a time as possible. They show a high ingenuity- of engineering, as a close inspectionin the Paddock will show. Drag racing was first seen at Brightonspeed Trials in 1962 when the late Sidney Allard attempted thekilometre in his machine. The experiment was repeated in 1964with both Mickey Thompson and Dante Duce of America com-ing over to support our event. Unfortunately, these machineswere not geared for the kilometre.

Brighton has always been famed for the kilometre, being theonly course in the country over this distance.

Today's entry is certainly not lacking in quality. J. William-son must be favourite for F.T.D. in his Manpower McLaren-but R. Rose in his McLaren may be a surprise winner.

THE MOTORCYCLES

Although there are many sprint courses throughout thecountry, few can compare with the challenge of the BrightonKilometre. With the restoration of the kilo distance in 1971 onMadeira Drive, many of Britain's top sprint and drag racingriders are appearing again this year. For some, Brighton is achallenge that they cannot resist, while others are entering to seejust what makes Brighton the speed merchants' mecca.

The Incorporated Sprint Organisation (ISO) are again proudto be co-operating with the Brighton and Hove Motor Club inorganising the motor-cycle entry. ISO also organise the now farrnousChandy/ISO World Records weekend at RAF Elvington, nearYork, and the Brighton/Kilo is possibly the last opportunity formany riders to test their machines over the kilometre distancebefore this year's World Records Weekend on 30th September/l stOctober. The Brighton course itself presents more than just thechallenge of time and speed, as riding ability and handling are ata premium due to the narrowness of the Drive. Also, in the areaof the finish line there are several undulations in the track surface, and it is not uncommon for machines passing through the terminal'speed trap' to do so in mid-air!

An innovation this year is the provision of a standing-start tmile course for the bikes as well as the dragsters (which isorganised by the B.D. and H.R.A.) , in addition to the traditionalstanding-start kilo. This is to accommodate the pure drag-racingmotorcycles who race regularly on t mile drag-strips such as SantaPod. The engines of these bikes are very highly stressed, some

Page 12: SHELL - BRIGHTON · Appreciation - The Organiserswish to express their sincere thanks to the following for theirassistance: The Mayor & Corporation of Brighton for the use of Madeira

10

producing over 150 b.h.p .. and will only withstand runs of 10/12seconds as opposed to the 20 or so seconds required for the kilodistance.

Two fine examples of drag racing bikes will be John Hobb's1000 C.c. machine-Olympus II-this is virtually a doubled-upversion of his World Record holding 500 c.c. superchargedTriumph, and his new machine pOSSe5Ses not only two twin-cylinder Triumph engines, but each engine has its own individualsupercharger and separate fuel-injection system, and is estimatedto develop a shattering 200 b.h.p. This is a 1972 machine, andis still very much in the development stage. but is already con-sistently running below 10 seconds in the 1 mile. Another bigdrag racing machine is 'Pegasus', Vincent-powered also super-charged. and superbly prepared. 'Pegasus' is owned and riddenby three' enthusiasts, Mick Butler (who at this meeting will beriding his own 500 c.c. Norton over the kilo), Derek Chinn andIan Messenger. We must wait and see who actually has the! mileride today, as these three lads share the expenses and the rides.

Among the kilo contenders this year are Don East, winner ofthe "Dolphin Trophy" last year. Don comes from Greenwich, inSouth East London. and is a regular World Records contender. His machine 'Quasimodo' is a blown 750 Triumph. and must beone of the most spartan machines going. In the 500 c.c. class isanother Brighton regular. John Camni. who can cover the dis-ance in a very quick 20 seconds with terminal speeds in the 140m.p.h. bracket on his blown 500 Triumph. And there is a reallywide range of other machines, ranging from the) 928 250 c.c. RexAcme ridden by Chris Percival and owned and entered by BertSnashall, through the racing and sprint machines. up to the verylatest Standard Production 'superbikes,' such as the huge ItalianLaverda 750 twin. There will undoubtedly be some on-courserivalry among the beautiful vintage machines. Dick Knight ispresent with his Brough-Superior, often called the Rolls Royce ofmotorcycles. and his machine has man)' links with the history ofthe Brighton Speed Trials. There will be two Douglas machinespresent-those of Ken Halls and the ex-Brooklands machine ofDoc Bayley/Len Cole, this latter ridden today by Phil Manzano, the sprint and drag-racing columnist of Motor Cycle News.

Finally, no story of motorcycle sprinting woul d be completewithout mention of that doyen of record-breakers. George Brown, still holder of the outriaht solo course record over the Brightonkilo. and also holder of many world records. Although Georgewill not be competing today he will be presenting a special GeorgeBrownfTSO Trophy to any rider who can break his own courserecord.

rso hope that everyone will enjoy this year's Speed Trial.and especially. the entertainment and excitement that we are surethe motorcycles will provide.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DRAG RACING IN ENGLAND

A small group of enthusiasts first got the bug from Americancar magazines and formed the British Hot Rod Association andstarted holding small meetings on lonely airfields. Our late Presi-dent, Sydney Allard built the first American-style dragsters and in1963 a challenge series against an American car "Mooneyes" wasorganised. The legendary Mickey Thompson also turned up andone of the appearances was here at Brighton.

Following the success of these races, two festivals of dragracing, with several American vehicles present, were held in 64and 65. Unfortunately. rain made the 65 one a financial disaster, and the club formed to run them. the British Drag Racing Associ-ation, was amalgamated into the B.H.R.A. to form today's leadingclub, the British Drag Racing and Hot Rod Association.

Another milestone was the opening of Britain's first perma-nent strip-Santa Pod near Bedford. in 1966. It was resurfacedin 1968 and has since improved in lay-out and facilities until todayit can match all but the very best American strips. Meanwhilethe sport grew steadily and the cars and bikes got more numerousand faster. The B.D.R. & H.R.A. has now held two very success-ful International meetings, and they hope to lure the Americansback in a couple of years' time.

In 1970 a new club, the N.D.R.e. was formed, and it can onlybe a matter of time before a second permanent strip is opened.

The cars you will see today are among the best in the country, and. in fact. the two big dragsters of Skilton and Priddle are thefastest in the world outside America-both having done 7.3 second*" miles at over 200 m.p.h. Skilton. in fact, holds the worldrecord over two directions for the t mile.

Most of these vehicles can be seen at any meeting at SantaPod throughout the season and if you would like to know moreabout the sport the Association's General Secretary on 01-3692103will be able to help you; or you can speak to any of the dragracers in the Paddock today.
