Stewart C. Barton Jr. aka “Stu” retired from Wingate High School in 2006 after teaching and coaching for 30 years. We wish him farewell, and send our

condolences to his family. Mr. Barton will always be remembered here at Wingate High School. He served our community and our children with great honor.

Happy New Year! We are looking forward to another successful productive year here at Wingate High School. Students received their schedules on Monday morning and started their second semester classes on Monday. Some had class changes, others did not. Semester 1 grades are posted in Infinite Campus, and will be mailed out as soon as grades are finalized.

Keep in mind, students needed to earn at a minimum a D- [60%] for the semester to earn a .5 credit for each class. Students are expected to earn a certain number of credits to move up a grade. Credits per grade:

Freshman [9th] 0- 5.5 Credits

Sophomore [10th] 6 – 11.5 Credits

Junior [11th] 12-18.5 Credits

Senior [12th] 19 – 24 Credits [Required courses and testing must be completed to graduate]

Please remind your students to be diligent in their studies, and to do their classwork and homework in a timely manner. Progress grades for Quarter 3 will be posted on February 5th, and Parent/Teacher Conferences are scheduled for February 19th. If you have a concern about your student’s grades or attendance prior to PTCs, you can call our counselors Margie Long [11th- 12th grade] or Marjean Benally [9th 10th grade].

In addition, our Senior English Teacher Mrs. Karen Malone and our Senior Class would like to take this opportunity to invite you to WHS to view their work. They have worked diligently on senior portfolios for College and Career Readiness. Our seniors have applied to and researched at least two colleges in preparation for graduation. It is the hope of WHS that they have a plan for next year as they begin life after high school.

Students will set up in the multipurpose room and begin exhibiting their work from 9:00 am to 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, January 13th. Thank you for supporting your senior student in their last year of high school. We are looking forward to seeing you here.

Smith, We are Wishing you and your family all the best as you enter into a new

Dormitory news!

In Dorm18, Boys’ Wing, we have our

early Morning Prayer and Exercise,

every Tuesday morning. We are usually

joined by students from Dorm-17 and

Dorm-19. We use white corn meal and

corn pollen to pray. Whoever would like

to participate is welcome to join. We

meet out front of the residential Mini-

Gym at 6:20am to 6:45am.

Our students really enjoy their prayer

time. Students are also learning Navajo

words for the four sacred mountains,

four directions, and for mother

earth/father sky. After our prayer we

do an exercise.

Also, a former student from the class of

2013, Alvin Grieve, went hunting and

killed a Bull Elk. He bought a large hind

leg to Dorm-18; We will make Elk Stew

for our Students. Alvin Grieve is

currently a student at Navajo Technical

WHS National Honor Society ~Mrs. West, NHS Sponsor

The National Honor Society completed service work at the St. Joseph’s homeless shelter, located on Gallup’s north side, last semester. In October, students helped prepare, clean, and serve dinner. Students returned during their Thanksgiving break and assisted with the daily cleaning of the linens and the dormitory area. It is always rewarding to see our students sacrifice some of their vacation time to help others in need. Students also went Christmas caroling and shared their vocal talents with local elderly homes. Yeego Shush! NHS also completed their application process for the New Year in December. Students selected will be notified when the selection process is complete.

We have some exciting events planned for the upcoming

year. Also, a regionally award winning Jump Rope Coach

and judge will be joining the training sessions this month.

We need to get a good idea about how many students will

be participating, as soon as possible. So, it's very

important to come out to the sessions this month.

Senior of the Month for October was Paris Peshlakai. She is the daughter of Danny and Laurel Peshlakai and is from Navajo, New Mexico. Paris has been a member of National Honor Society since her sophomore year and a member of the volleyball team. Photography and playing guitar are some of Paris’ special talents. Her future plans are to attend the University of Northern Colorado and become a biologist. Congrats Paris!

Dual Credit Program with Dine’ College

Last month, there was an unusual activity planned for Tuesday, December 8th. About 1,000 schools around the world got on line and got involved with the ‘Hour of Code’ which promotes computer programming in high schools. Wingate High School has an extra-ordinary need to develop a computer programming class because our students need computer skills to compete in a more technologically advanced world. A recent article in Education Week reminds readers that Common Core state standards only suggests that computer programming classes be an elective class for graduation…but not a requisite class? How are we to meet President Obama’s mandate that students be prepared for a far more technological world in the future? If we do not require our students to learn computer skills that prepares them for their futures. The magazine article definitely poses questions to ponder.

Wingate High School and Dine’ College-Crownpoint are already discussing those needs for second semester and especially for Fall, 2016 when we expect to have the ITV lab set up and running. There is a very strong likelihood that computer programming in Net Logo would be a first class or workshop to be developed. The current sixty-three (63) students are enrolled strictly in Math 100 (Intermediate Algebra), Math 106 (Math Survey), Math 110 (College Algebra), Math 190 (Pre-Calculus) and Math 191 (Calculus 1). The Wingate High School/Dine’ College-Crownpoint Center dual credit program is vitally important for future college success because last week the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) standardized test was rejected by the Massachusetts Board of Education! As I stated in a previous article in this newsletter there are teachers, students and parents around America who are ‘opting out’ of standardized testing because: ‘raise a child, not tests scores’ as their call to action.

Course final exams were issued in December through all Dine’ College campuses as part of the course requirements. The best part about being in a dual credit program is that the college math instructors at Dine’ College develop a course syllabus and mid-term and final exams that ensure there are standards being met across the high school and tertiary classes. Secondary students are starting to complete their college requirements early before they have even left high school. This will save them a lot of money not having to matriculate in these very same classes next year or the following one.

Finally there is a new development that might be an unintended benefit for starting a dual credit program. We currently have enough students enrolled at Wingate High School, Shash Bitoo Olta, through Dine’ College-Crownpoint to begin to consider fielding a sports team in assorted men’s and women’s sports. We would develop a small independent division 3 league and compete with schools who aren’t recruiting all over the country and world. So many Dine’ students have had so much success in high school sports and they do NOT take their ability any farther. Stay tuned for more…
