Lakeview HighSchoolwasclosebehindinsecondplace,andHickoryHighSchoolstudentstookthird.Theeventwasheldin conjunction with the Greater Sharon Associates (GSA) and its Downtown SharonSpringFling.Highschoolteamsof two to five students were required to create and present an integrated marketingplanforthisyear’sSharonSpringFling.StudentsfromFarrellHighSchoolandMercerCountyCareerCenteralsogavestrongpresentations.
“Thejudgesweresoimpressedbyeachteam’s ingenuity and effort,” said Laura Ackley,generalmanagerofDonna’sDiner,BuhlMansionGuestHouseanddirector of marketing for Tara-A Country Inn.“Wethoughtallofthestudentsdidanexcellentjob.Thepanelofjudgeshadtogradenotonlyoncreativity,butfeasibility,professionalism,andbudget;anoverallplanwhichcouldbeimplementedtopromotedowntownSharon’sSpringFlingeventonMay7.Itwasverychallengingtopickjustonewinner;eachteamhadelementsoftheirpresentationthatcouldbeused.Kudosto the students and their advisors!”
Thecompetitionincludedthreeparts:apreliminaryeventheldinFebruaryattheShenango campus where students heard presentationson“BuildinganIntegratedMarketingPlan”byPennStateShenangoBusinessInstructorGeorgiaMacris,andtheSharonSpringFlingeventbyLauraAckley;ameetingwithGSAmembersatVisitMercerCountyPAinMarchabouttheDowntownSharonSpringFling;andtheactualcompetitionheldinApril.
DuringtheFebruaryevent,studentsheardfromseveralmediaaccountrepresentatives,includingSuKillar,iHeartRadio;StefanMarcella,TheSharonHerald;EricDoan,WFMJ;andSaraMcCauley,VisitMercerCountyPA/SocialSara.Eachrepresentativetalkedabouthis or her form of media, in addition to speakingaboutwaysofgettingfreepublicityandexposure.
Thestudentshadatotalofsixweekstopreparetheirintegratedmarketingplan
beforetheyreturnedonApril2wheretheypresentedinfrontofapanelofsixjudges,includingPennStateShenangoBusiness Instructors Lisa Bertin, Georgia Macris,andMichaelWachter;PennStateShenangostaffmemberLizIzenas;VisitMercerCountyPASalesandMarketingCoordinatorCarmenAiello;andLauraAckley.
“WeweresopleasedtohavefivelocalschoolsparticipateinourinauguralMarketingCompetition,”saidChuck Greggs, associate director of Admissions.“Weoriginallydiscussedcrafting an event where the students couldcreateaplanforafictitiousorganization;however,aftermeetingwithLauraAckley,whoisinstrumentalinorganizingSharon’sSpringFlingeachyear, we came up with the idea to have thestudentsputtogetheranactualmarketingplanforanactualevent,andI think the outcome was great. We are lookingforwardtonextyear’sevent.”
Local Students Pitch Marketing Plan for Sharon Spring Fling
TheCityofSharon’sHousingRehabilitationProgramoffersassistancetolowtomoderateincome homeowners for needed repairs,suchasroofreplacement,electricalsystemupdate,hotwatertank, furnace, windows, doors, porches, stairs and unsafe or defective conditionselsewhere.Theprogramalsoassiststhosehomeownerswho
havedisabilitiesandneedhandicapaccessibilityrampsandbaths/showersplacedintheirhomes.ThroughtheLeadHazardReductionProgram,residentswithchildrenundertheageofsix,residingorvisiting,maybeeligibleforrepairstoprotectchildrenfromleadbasedpainthazards.Eachyearthecity renovates 20 to 25 homes, and mitigatesleadhazardsinapproximately
10 houses.
“It’sareallygreatprogramthatmoreresidentsshouldtakeadvantage,”saysFrankSmeraglia,Sharon’srehabilitationspecialist.
