Any level of text editor or word processor will have commands to save, load, and print your text. These commands are so frequent that you will usually see many ways to invoke them. If you have already saved this document at least once, it will save the document to the same drive, directory, and file name you used last time. Another set of commands are found less frequently on text editors, but are common on higher-level word processors. These commands are for formatting various elements of a document. You may find a format menu. Many of these commands also are available on toolbars.9WORD PROCESSING PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDSThe attributes of word processing that lead to its effectiveness as a learning tool for children with special needs are generally the same attributes that make it effective for children in general.

In addition, the word processor frees students from the more tedious duties related to the editing process,19 enabling them to spend more time on the content of their written products.Word Prediction SoftwareWord prediction software is another example of a computer-based technology that can help students communicate with written language more easily. Many times, students with communication deficits will avoid the use of longer words and complex thoughts to avoid frustration with the act of writing. But word prediction software allows students with mild learning disabilities, as well as those with mild communication and motor impairments, to express their words and ideas in the vocabulary that more closely reflects their thinking, rather than in the vocabulary that is easiest to spell. Thus, with the help of word prediction software, students with mild learning disabilities are better able to compete academically in regular classroom settings.Use of computers for communication and networking activities via the Internet can expand the learning environment beyond the walls of the classroom and allow students with disabilities, just like other students, to access and send information literally around the world. Yet improved access and delivery systems do not necessarily bring improved instruction.10ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY TOOLS FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITYABBREVIATION EXPANDERS-these software programs allow a user to create, store, and re-use abbreviations for frequently-used words or phrases.ALTERNATIVE KEYBOARDS

INFORMATION/DATA MANAGERS

Another type of tool-Graphic organizers and outlining programs help users who have trouble organizing and outlining information as they begin a writing project. This type of program lets a user "dump" information in an unstructured manner and later helps him organize the information into appropriate categories and order.A portable word processor- is lightweight device that is easy to transport (e.g., from classroom to home). It can be helpful to kids who may have trouble writing by hand and prefer to use a keyboard. Word processing allows the user to edit and correct his written work more efficiently than doing so by hand.11Future of children.org>home>publication>journal.May17,2011.www.readingrockets.org>reading topicsAZwww.enotes.com>...>software/wetware discussion.April20.2009www.education.com>...>technology and learningREFERENCE PAGE
