Shamrock Shuffle INFO PACKET

The 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle Presented by Dental Health Associates & Isthmus

Madison, Wisconsin Sunday, March 13th, 2016

Races begin 10:00AM

5K, 10K & 3 Mile Walk

Information & Tip Sheet

Sunday, March 13th, 2015 • Races Begin 10:00AM • The Orpheum

VERY IMPORTANT - Race Changes, Announcements & Primary Info

•  EARLY packet pickup for race bib, race shirt and race chip will take place on

Friday, March 11th, Saturday, March 12th. There will also be day-of-race day packet pick up. You will find detailed information about locations & times in this packet.

•  VERY IMPORTANT: There will be separate corrals at the starting line, divided

by race distance and expected pace. See the section titled 'Starting Line' for more details.

•  VERY IMPORTANT: Daylight Saving Time takes place the night BEFORE

the race. Please adjust clocks/planning accordingly.

•  5K & 10K race and 3 mile walk courses are tentatively laid out. The courses are on the final pages of this handout.

•  The 5K, 10K and 3 Mile courses are very similar to last year’s course. The

Observatory Hill still remains in in both races.

•  Please be advised that there are areas of the course that may be ICY or MUDDY.

We ask that you watch your step if you come across ice, snow or slippery footing.

•  Please err on the side of caution when you see any dangerous circumstances. You may not make a personal record but at least you’ll stay injury-free for your next race! Please treat this, as we intended, like a fun run.

•  The 5K & 10K race is chip-timed. You will find your DISPOSABLE timing chip

on your bib number. It should stay ON your bib. This will help insure an accurate start/finish time. No chip. No time.

•  Please try to refrain from wearing iPods & music players. We only ask this because

(1) it’s safer and (2) our regulators at USATF make it a policy to restrict them. In the past, our lead bikes and course marshals blow whistles and yell at runners up ahead to clear the way but didn’t hear them because they were listening to music too loudly.

•  If you would like to find out immediate results, check our web site

(http://www.shamrock-shuffle.com) on your smart phone since results will be posted immediately online. After race officials and race management review the results, they will be available at State Street Brats in hard copy form beginning at 1PM to hand out awards for overall and age group winners. Any awards not picked up will be available at Fleet Feet Madison in Middleton for 30 days.

•  This race is capped at 5,000 runners. We will make announcements on our web site

and via Facebook if we are coming close (4,000+) to our cap. No “bandits” are allowed on the course. We will ask them to leave.

•  We will be giving commemorative 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle to the first 400

participants who appear at Saturday’s packet pickup on March 12th.

•  There will also be 300 free tickets to Madison Capitals games available to participants.

•  Fleet Feet Madison will sell official Madison Shamrock Shuffle Nike merchandise

before and during the race weekend.

•  We stopped giving shirts to those who signed up on/after March 1st. If there are any shirts available after the race, we will give away leftovers to those who didn’t get one. We may even sell some. Money will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County.

The 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle Packet Pickup & Registration Pick up your registration materials at three different times during the weekend: •  Fleet Feet Sun Prairie Race Director’s Meet & Greet Happy Hour & Packet Pickup 2828 Prairie Lakes Drive, Suite 106 in Sun Prairie Friday, March 11th from 4PM-7PM •  The Orpheum 216 State Street in Madison Saturday, March 12th from 9AM-4PM •  The Orpheum 216 State Street in Madison Sunday, March 15th from 8AM-9:45AM

You will receive a bib number with a timing chip glued to the back and a race shirt (if you ordered one in time). There are also opportunities to get a 2016 Shuffle Cup for a free beer if you are one of the first 400 present at Packet Pickup on Saturday, March 12th at The Orpheum. We will offer other social offerings like finish line web streaming, Shuffle Merchandise for sale at the Fleet Feet kiosk and tickets to local hockey games. You may have a friend pick up your race materials. We advise that you give them consent by giving them a permission slip with your signature. They will need to present that letter

at packet pickup. Please wear your bib number on the front of your shirt. That helps us identify you. In photography and timing purposes, keep it showing on the front of your body. The race is “chip-timed”. It registers you when you cross the start line & the finish line for accurate results. The chip will be adhered to your bib number when you pick it up. Please keep it on your bib number. The disposable, paper chip will need to stay on there, so we have accurate results for your race. After the race, you can dispose of it or put it in a shadowbox because it was just that awesome of a race. Online registration closes Wednesday, March 9th at 11:59PM. If it hits our cap of 5,000 runners, then we will close down online registration early. We will have registration at packet pick-up. It may sell out before/on race day. When the numbers reach 4,000+, we will notify everyone on the web site as well as our Facebook group.

Day of Shuffle Parking You can park at the parking ramps located near The Orpheum. This will have a minimal cost but it will be stored in a dry, convenient location. Visit the city parking web site http://www.cityofmadison.com/parkingUtility/garagesLots/ to find out locations and information about these parking ramps. There is also on-street parking. It is FREE on Sundays in Madison with few spots taken on an early Sunday morning.

The 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle Amenities

All of us at the Madison Shamrock Shuffle use resources to provide you with a race day that’s safe, comfortable and, most importantly, FUN. We offer the following amenities to all runners and family members spectating: • The Orpheum is open beginning 8:00AM on race day • We also offer gear check/coat check at no cost inside the Orpheum • Porta Potties are near the Start/Finish Line at Peace Park • Look for the photographers from Focal Flame! They're taking pictures of you! • State Street Brats opens at 9AM on Shuffle Day • Water stations are available on all courses • Food and drink in the finish line chute • State Street Brats will once again host a post-race party after the race

The 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle Starting Line

The races begin at 10:00AM. PLEASE LINE UP IN YOUR RACE DISTANCE CORRAL, ACCORDING TO PACE. We will have dozens of volunteers and signs that will help direct you. If you don't see where you need to go, then please ask a volunteer in and around the corrals who will help direct you.

The start line is located on the 500 block of State Street. This start line will be well marked with a stage, music and start/finish structure. It is THREE BLOCKS from The Orpheum (after State & Gorham). Please plan accordingly to get down to the starting line in time for your race shotgun start. It’s only a couple blocks but it will take you a few minutes to get down there beyond Gorham Street. If you are pushing a stroller, we suggest that you begin your race towards the back of the pack. This is to insure safety for other runners. We have the race chip timed so you won’t lose out by being in the back of the pack. If you are a handicapped racer, let a volunteer know so that we make every effort to accommodate any extra needs. No pets are allowed on the course. We love running with our dogs, too, but our insurance guys ask that NO pets be present.

Please follow directions from course volunteers & course markers. They are there to help, so keep your eyes peeled for them. If you need immediate assistance, course volunteers are there to help—get off the course and let them know what you need. We also have course marshals on bike who are there to direct the volunteers. Then, we have course directors who are seasoned professionals at organizing races and troubleshooting. Finally, we have medical professionals on staff if any immediate needs arise. We have many people at the ready. They play a big part in making this race awesome—high five any of them as you run by them!

Costumes are encouraged. If you would like to dress up, please do! At the finish, smile for the cameras! There will be professional photographers from Focal Flame Photography getting you on the course and crossing the finish line. After the race, check our web site (www.shamrock-shuffle.com) for the link to their pictures. When you cross the finish line, please keep moving so people don’t run into you. You will be given the choice of bottled water and food at the end. Please take what you need to help recover/cool down and make your way to the Orpheum if you have anything you need to pick up.

After You Finish the 2016 Madison Shamrock Shuffle There will not be an official “awards ceremony” on the day of the race but overall & age group winners can pick up their awards. We will have results and awards upstairs at State Street Brats. A link to the race results will be posted on our web site’s ‘results and photos’ page (www.shamrock-shuffle.com). Last year, we were set up and not many people showed up or could find us. We’ll try to put up signage. We should be there by 1:00PM. If you would like to find out immediate results, check our web site’s ‘results and photos’ page (www.shamrock-shuffle.com) on your smart phone or when you get home. Either way, join us at State Street Brats for a post-race party! There will be food & drink specials as well as good fun with fellow participants. There will be beer from our sponsors Goose Island. We will have a hard copy of results as well as medals for age group & overall winners beginning at 1PM.

Conclusion

We expect 2016 to be, once again, another great year for The Madison Shamrock Shuffle.

We have witnessed our numbers grow by leaps and bounds. With our growth, the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County have reaped the rewards. As The Madison Shamrock Shuffle grows, we continue to listen to feedback from all participants and welcome help as we evolve & grow. We expect that all goes well but we can’t predict every problem that comes up. Please be understanding that this is an all-volunteer race

that has donated time and money to provide the best race we can. But if you have any suggestions or concerns, feel free to contact us by email ([email protected]). As always, we thank you for your support. Without it, we would still be a bunch of drinkers with a running problem wondering where to meet up on St. Patty’s Day. And the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County would not have the financial blessings that you contributed.

Madison Shamrock Shuffle Walk (Subject to Change)

This year’s walk has been extended to be placed on our 5K course. We found so many people like being part of all the action. It also helps the city keep things organized. City buses have more access and our officers have less real estate to serve and protect. It takes you on campus and past the Stockyard Pavilions. There’s a barn right next to it where they sometimes have a Haunted House as a club fundraiser. It’s fun but very scary. Please be mindful of runners because they may be competing against other runners or their own personal record. I wouldn’t want to stand in the way of your goals! Shuffle Walk:

1.  Start at common Start Line on State Street – Last Start around 10:15 2.   Go west on State Street and turn right onto Lake St. 3.   Turn left onto Langdon and you’ll pass the Union 4.   Turn right onto Park for only a little bit, then left onto Observatory. 5.   You will follow Observatory up those hills. Stay left! Watch for runners. 6.   Turn left at Easterday Ln. 7.   Turn left onto Linden Dr. 8.   Turn left at Charter St. 9.   Turn right onto Observatory Dr. Stay to your right. 10.  Head back up the hill, turn right on Park St. 11.  Turn left onto Langdon, then right onto Lake St. 12.  Turn left and stay left to the finish line on State St.

Madison Shamrock Shuffle 5K Route (Subject to Change)

They say the best views of Madison are up on Observatory Drive. There’s a reason why they have so many benches up there. When you get to the Bell Tower, the UW Marching Band will be there. I think they take requests. They also like to party at Brats after the Shuffle, so you may see them many times today. There will be a water station at Charter & Observatory so you have TWO drinks of water! What a deal!

1.  Start at common Start Line on State Street – 2nd Start around 10:07 2.   Go west on State Street and turn right onto Lake St. 3.   Turn left onto Langdon and you’ll pass the Union 4.   Turn right onto Park for only a little bit, then left onto Observatory. 5.   You will follow Observatory up those hills. Stay left!

Madison Shamrock Shuffle 10K (Subject to Change)

The challenging 10K returns. We added a loop at the end to help alleviate congestion. There will be a water station close to Elm and you’ll hit it twice.

1.  The 10K is THE FIRST race to start in our staggered starts. 2.   The 10K Corral is the front block. Get up there! 3.   Head west on State Street and turn right on Lake Street. 4.   Turn left on Langdon Street. 5.   Turn right on Park Street and immediately turn left onto Observatory. 6.   Follow Observatory and turn right at Elm. 7.   Then turn left onto the famous Temin Lakefront Path. 8.   Turn left onto Marsh Dr the right onto Willow Drive 9.   Turn right onto University Drive and follow around curve 10.   Turn right onto Colgate 11.  Turn right onto Wellesley Rd. then right onto Oxford. 12.  Follow the path to Elm and Observatory back to the finish.
