Welcome | 1

Dear Friends,Reading through our Winter/Spring catalog was one of those delightful Shambhala Mountain Center moments. There are so many programs that are personally inspiring, and I kept checking my calendar to see how many I might be able to take. There is such a display of wisdom, engagement and depth, and over and over I was given the opportunity to experience the sense of gratitude for our land and the amazing role it plays in so many peoples’ lives – presenters, retreat participants and staff.

Recognizing the need in our world for the wisdom held and shared in our offerings, we have established new policies designed to help more people come home to themselves and to the natural beauty of our shared land. In addition to the 15% coupon offered in this catalog for our winter and spring programming, we have expanded our generosity policy to include all of our programs. We also want Shambhala Mountain Center to be a place where you can simply come for a weekend to practice, wander the land and visit the Stupa at your own pace and are offering 25% off of our lodging prices in a new “Getaway” option. And, beginning in March, we will be hosting an open house on the first Sunday of every month. All of us here at Shambhala Mountain Center extend a warm invitation, and look forward to welcoming you home.

With love from the mountains,

Michael Gayner, Executive Director

ShambhalaShambhala Mountain Center offers regularly scheduled programs for people who are new to meditation, as well as those who have a developed personal practice. Shambhala teachings recognize that human wisdom and basic goodness do not belong to any one religion or doctrine. Shambhala welcomes people of all religious traditions, as well as those who do not follow a particular spiritual path.

The Shambhala Training Heart of Warriorship program (Levels I-V) introduces teachings that cultivate genuineness, confidence, humor, and dignity in daily life. Each program includes meditation instruction and practice, talks on Shambhala teachings, group discussions, and individual meetings with a teacher. Descriptions and details for programs that have prerequisites can be found on our website.

The Way of Shambhala is a series of five contemplative workshops that provide an experiential overview of meditation practice, wisdom teachings, contemplative arts, and physical disciplines rooted in the ancient traditions of Shambhala and Tibetan Buddhism. For additional program details, see our website.

The Sacred Path program introduces further practices to develop warriorship and extend the student’s training in meditation. These practices are based on a societal vision and aspiration to help the world.

PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION

The Karma of Money, Fame and SexDavid Loy

Buddhism teaches that the delusion of self – the “I” that is separate from the rest of the world – is haunted by a sense of lack. When we don’t understand the source of this discomfort, we often become preoccupied with money, sex, fame, or war. Such obsessions also reveal where our society is collectively stuck. In this retreat, we will examine personal transformation according to Buddhist tradition and consider how to integrate social transformation with the Buddhist path.

Tuition $195 + 2 nights

David Loy is a professor, writer and Zen teacher in the Sanbo Kyodan tradition of Japanese Zen Buddhism. He is the author of Money, Sex, War, Karma: Notes for a Buddhist Revolution.

Shambhala Training Level I:The Art of Being Human

Marlow Brooks

Meditation sharpens our intelligence and uncovers our wisdom. In this workshop, we receive practical instructions for transforming confused emotions and situations into effective actions as they arise. No longer deterred or depressed by obstacles, we can include everything as part of the path. Daily life challenges can become opportunities for both contemplative practice and social action. Through the practice of meditation, we glimpse unconditional goodness as the ground of our existence. Opening to ourselves with gentleness and appreciation, we begin to see our potential as genuine and compassionate human beings. This workshop is recommended for new and experienced meditators, as well as for those looking to enrich their existing spiritual path. You will receive a copy of Shambhala: The Sacred Path of the Warrior by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche.

Tuition $135 + 2 nights

Marlow Brooks has been directing all Shambhala Levels for over twenty-nine years. She has taught at Naropa University for many years and is also a healer in the Chinese Five Element tradition. She is an artist and calligrapher and her work has appeared in exhibitions in China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Canada and the United States. Her art is deeply influenced by the vision of the Shambhala teachings.

SHAMBHALA

Learn to MeditateMany of us are slaves to our minds. We try to focus, and our mind wanders off. We try to keep stress at bay, but anxiety keeps us awake at night. We try to be good to the people we love, but then we forget them and put ourselves first. And when we want to change our life, we dive into spiritual practice and expect quick results, only to lose focus after the honeymoon has worn off. We return to our state of bewilderment. We’re left feeling helpless and discouraged. It seems we all agree that training the body through exercise, diet, and relaxation is a good idea, but why don’t we think about training our minds? Meditation practice allows us to find peace within ourselves while developing a strong, flexible mind.

Our Learn to Meditate retreats offer accessible meditation practice techniques as well as a perspective on how they work. We will draw from Turning the Mind Into an Ally, the best-selling book by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as we explore this question together in a contemplative environment. You will receive a copy of this book at the retreat.

Tuition $140 + 2 nights

PERSONAL TRANSFORMATION

Introduction to Mindfulness-Based Stress ReductionShastri Janet Solyntjes

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a practical, scientifically supported program designed to reduce stress, facilitate relaxation, and promote physical health and emotional well-being. Inspired by the work of Jon Kabat-Zinn, this retreat offers tools for coping with “full catastrophe living” including chronic stress, illness, pain or personal crisis. By relating directly with our bodies and emotions, we will discover the power of mindfulness to change our lives. Through sitting, walking and body-scan meditation practices – as well as mindful yoga – we will return to our lives better equipped to manage stress.

Tuition $150 + 2 nights

Shastri Janet Solyntjes, MA, teaches mindfulness practices at Naropa University, workplaces and Shambhala Meditation Centers. A meditation practitioner since 1977, she completed training in MBSR with Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli, as well as a MBSR Teacher Development Intensive at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She is co-founder of the Center for Courageous Living.

BODY AWARENESS

Precious Knowing: A Meditation and Yoga Retreat for Women

Katharine Kaufman

Our bodies hold emotions, images, patterns and stories. When we learn to fully inhabit our bodies through mindfulness practices, we can know ourselves as complete and wakeful beings. To do this, we will practice sitting meditation, flowing and restorative yoga, and playful improvisational movement. We will deepen our practice and insight through silent mornings, alone and together, and our community will develop understanding and trust during evening talking circles. Previous yoga or meditation experience recommended.

Tuition $260 + 4 nights

Katharine Kaufman, MFA, is ordained in the Soto Zen lineage of Kobun Chino Roshi. She taught and practiced yoga for many years at Richard Freeman’s Yoga Workshop and Wendy Bramlett’s Studio Be, and has studied in India. Katharine is a senior adjunct faculty member in Contemplative Movement Arts at Naropa University and a published poet.

CONTEMPLATIVE ARTS

Introduction to Ikebana/Kado: The Contemplative Art of Flower Arranging

Alexandra Shenpen

The practice of Ikebana awakens our delight for the natural beauty found in this world and teaches us that everyone has the instinct, gentleness, and courage of artistic talent. As we place each stem we are expressing our innate wisdom and humanity. Perception deepens as we look longer, use less, notice the space, and bring our attention back to this moment. Hana-kokoro – flower heart/mind – reawakens the inherent life and appreciation within humans and nature. Join us to learn basic patterns of harmony as we work with branches, flowers, water, space, attentiveness, intuition and elegance.

Tuition $155 + 2 nights (includes materials)

Alexandra Shenpen, PhD, Sensei, has studied Ikebana/Kado through Kalapa Ikebana and the Sogetsu School of Japan over the last 25 years. She teaches extensively at Naropa University, meditation centers and public venues locally and abroad, and is a psychotherapist in private practice. She recently passed the master teacher (Riji) exam through Sogetsu Ryu in Tokyo.

Feeding Your Demons:Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict

Lama Tsultrim Allione

Inspired by the ancient practice of Chöd, Feeding Your Demons is a five-step process created by Lama Tsultrim Allione that allows us to offer compassion and understanding to our inner demons rather than engaging in battle and struggle with them. This develops the potential for deep healing and allows the psyche to move from polarization toward integration. The process is of great benefit when working with a wide variety of both personal and collective demons, including addictions, physical and mental illnesses, fear, anger, relationship challenges and other dilemmas of modern life.

Tuition $195 + 2 nights

Lama Tsultrim Allione is an internationally known Buddhist teacher and the founder of Tara Mandala Retreat Center. One of the first American women to be ordained in the Tibetan tradition by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, Lama Tsultrim is the author of Women of Wisdom and the national bestseller Feeding Your Demons: Ancient Wisdom for Resolving Inner Conflict. In 2009 Lama Tsultrim received the International Outstanding Woman in Buddhism Award, given in Bangkok, Thailand.

MINDFUL LIVING

The Five Keys to Mindful CommunicationAcharya Susan Chapman & Greg Heffron

Mindful communication moves us from a me-first to a we-first model of relationship, building an enlightened society one conversation at a time. This retreat introduces the Green Light communication model to explore patterns of conversation: the open, Green Light of awake body, tender heart and open mind; the closed Red Light of heartless-mind and mindless-heart; the in-between, Yellow Light in which we compassionately welcome vulnerable feelings. We evoke the power of deep listening and gentle speech as ways of touching in with the goodness of others and the clarity of our truth. The format includes sitting meditation, brief talks, Mudra Space Awareness practice and dialogue exercises.

Tuition $170 + 2 nights

Acharya Susan Chapman, MA, author of The Five Keys To Mindful Communication, is a family therapist, contemplative psychologist and meditation teacher. She completed Gampo Abbey’s three year retreat and served as Druppon, retreat leader, for six years.

Learn to MeditatePatricia Kelly

Many of us are slaves to our minds.

Patricia Kelly has been practicing meditation since 1986. Her connection to practice brought her from Maine to Naropa University and the Contemplative Psychotherapy program. After graduating in 1989 she remained in Boulder, raising her son and working in community mental health with families and children. She maintains a private psychotherapy practice in Louisville, Colorado. She continues her meditation training as a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and is an active member of the Shambhala Community.

Confusion Arising as Wisdom Ringu Tulku Rinpoche

In this special weekend, Ringu Tulku will teach on his new book, Confusion Arises as Wisdom, a commentary on Gampopa’s Great Teachings to the Assembly. How could confusion arise as wisdom? According to the Mahamudra view, confusion arises as wisdom when we realize that everything we experience is the radiance of the mind’s own nature. What is the nature of our mind? How do we come to recognize that? Gampopa shows his students – and now us – the path of deep understanding and meditation that leads to the realization of Mahamudra, the “Great Seal” of the true nature of reality.

Tuition $195 + 2 nights

Ringu Tulku Rinpoche was born in east Tibet and fled to India in 1959. He studied with many outstanding masters, including Dilgo Khyentsé Rinpoche and the Gyalwang Karmapa, and was awarded the titles of Khenpo and Lopön Chenpo. Since 1990, Ringu Tulku has traveled worldwide. Rinpoche is extremely knowledgeable, and with his excellent command of English, he is able to transmit the most complex teachings in a remarkably accessible way, infused with his characteristic warmth and sense of humor.

BODY AWARENESS

Free Your EnergyJeanie Manchester & Billy Goldman

In this retreat we will refine and deepen our understanding of the practice by utilizing the breath, the steadying of the gaze, and proper body alignment. The practice will serve as a place to listen and become more aware of our superficial mind and our habitual patterns. As these habitual patterns arise within the container of the practice there is the opportunity to see them for what they are-concepts/ideas.

As one is successful in this endeavor the energy that was previously deployed in identifying with these ideas is released which results in greater freedom and energy. Not only do we experience greater joy but we begin to respond, versus reacting, to our challenges.

Through daily asana, pranayama, meditation and contemplation we will come to understand better how we can free up the vital life force that is essential for living a vibrant and healthy life.

Tuition $165 + 2 nights

Jeanie Manchester, ERYT 500, Director of Anjaneya Yoga Shala in Boulder, Colorado has been studying modern dance and yoga for the past 30 years and offers yoga immersions, trainings and retreats. Bill began studying yoga in 1981 with Richard Freeman and has been teaching since 1994. He continued to study with Richard Freeman, K. Intense emotions such as anger, jealousy and fear can either trap us in struggles or open us to the direct experience of awakening. This retreat presents techniques to expose core belief structures that perpetuate emotional confusion, meditation practices that foster clarity and insight, and daily Hatha Yoga classes. Revealing that even the most painful emotions offer us an opportunity to develop genuine compassion, these practices also give us a glimpse of the pure energy that is the essence of emotion. Guest presenter and artist Cynthia Moku will also lead a special contemplative brush-and-ink session as a means of processing emotions.

Tuition $185 + 4 nights

Acharya Dale Asrael is an associate professor at Naropa University in the Transpersonal Counseling Psychology, Buddhist Studies and Contemplative Education departments. She is the Dean of Meditation Instructors for Shambhala International. Dale has led meditation retreats internationally since 1980.

Cynthia Moku is an accomplished artist in Japanese brushwork and Buddhist Scroll painting. A student of Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche, she continues her meditation training with Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Cynthia is the founder of Naropa University’s Visual Art Degree Program.

Advanced Tibetan Cranial Apprentice Program Shar Lee

A nearly extinct energetic healing modality passed down orally from Tibetan monks throughout the centuries, Tibetan Cranial (TC) work reconnects us to our inherent healing capacity. While maintaining a state of prayer or mantra, practitioners read hundreds of pulses, and then fine tune bones in the skull, jaw, palate and neck. This work has been shown to alleviate suffering and promote a profound sense of well-being. Yoga and meditation will be taught as part of the five-day retreat so that apprentices can develop a daily spiritual practice to support their work.

This is the advanced TC apprenticeship program. Before registering, you must experience an individual TC session from one of our practitioners or Shar Lee, have been accepted as a TC Apprentice and attended the TC beginners program. See our practitioners listed by location, and details about the program: www.tibetancranial.org. For more information, call 720-378-8044.

Tuition $1000 + 5 nights

Shar Lee, CYI, has been teaching yoga and Buddhist meditation internationally since 1966. After studying Zen Buddhism in the United States, she studied Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal with several esteemed lamas. In 1987, she began training in Tibetan Cranial work with Lama Dorje in Kathmandu, Nepal.

WISDOM TRADITIONS

Awakening the Luminous MindTenzin Wangyal Rinpoche

At the core of the dzogchen teachings is the view that all sentient beings are primordially pure and perfect, and have the potential to spontaneously manifest in a beneficial way. This capacity is within each of us, yet we often find ourselves alienated and disconnected as we rush about in our day-to-day lives. If we are willing to directly and nakedly encounter the experiences of our ordinary life, these experiences become the doorway to the realization of our nature, the inner refuge. Pain can become the path home. Join Rinpoche as we engage in meditation and reflection to honor the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and to discover the gifts of spaciousness, awareness and warmth that bring healing and benefit to ourselves, our relationships and the greater world.

Tuition $195 + 2 nights

Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is the founding director of Ligmincha Institute. In his more than 20 years of living and teaching in the West, Rinpoche has become renowned for his ability to convey the ancient wisdom of Bön Buddhism in a way that is highly relevant to Western students. His books include Healing With Form, Energy and Light; Tibetan Sound Healing; The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep; Awakening the Sacred Body; Tibetan Yogas of Body, Speech, and Mind; and the new Awakening the Luminous Mind.
