Your Body Knows the Answer Using Your Felt Sense to Solve Problems, Effect Change, and Liberate Creativity David I. Rome

Combines mindfulness with the Focusing technique made popular by Eugene Gendlin to tap into your body’s subtle wisdom for dealing with all life’s challenges. Your body has an answer to just about any question or challenge that arises. It’s simply a matter of learning to recognize and listen to the subtle physical signal that comes from someplace inside you other than your mind. This “felt sense” was first made widely known by the psychologist Eugene Gendlin, whose book on learning to use your felt sense, Focusing, has sold millions of copies since it was first published in 1978. Certified Focusing teacher David Rome here enhances the traditional Focusing techniques with mindfulness and other Buddhist principles learned from his teacher Chögyam Trungpa to provide remarkably effective techniques for learning to access your felt sense—and not only for applying it to problem solving and dealing with challenges, but for kickstarting the creative process in oneself. With its short, accessible chapters and its abundant practical exercises, this may be the most compact and accessible guide to Focusing yet published.

Summary

DAVID I. ROME is a certified Focusing Trainer who has brought Focusing together with Buddhist mindfulnessawareness practices in workshops in the United States, Canada, and Europe. He began practicing Buddhism in 1971 and served for nine years as private secretary to the Tibetan teacher Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche. David played a leadership role in the early development of Shambhala International and Naropa University and was one of the first teachers in the Shambhala Training program. He has served as President of Schocken Books and Senior VP for Planning of the Greyston Foundation and is a senior fellow with the Garrison Institute, a Hudson Valley research and retreat center applying contemplative methods to solve social and environmental challenges. Your Body Knows the Answer is his first book.

The Essence of Buddhism An Introduction to Its Philosophy and Practice Traleg Kyabgon, Sogyal Rinpoche, The Karmapa

One of the clearest introductions to the teachings and philosophies of the three main schools of Buddhism: Theravada, Mahayana, and Tibetan. The Essence of Buddhism is a comprehensive overview of the Buddhist path from the perspective of the three vehicles of Tibetan Buddhism: the Hinayana, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. Although these vehicles are associated with different attitudes toward Buddhist practice, basic to them all is the need to understand our own immediate condition. The primary tool for achieving this is meditation, and The Essence of Buddhism serves as a handbook for the various meditative approaches of Buddhist practice. Along the way, it provides vivid definitions of fundamental Buddhist concepts, such as compassion, emptiness, and Buddhanature, and answers common questions.

Deeper Dating How to Drop the Games of Seduction and Discover the Power of Intimacy Ken Page

“Among the best manuals for succeeding in finding and keeping love we have seen.”—Harville Hendrix, PhD and Helen LaKelly Hunt, PhD A program that not only leads to healthy relationships but that also steers us toward our own potential greatness—from wellknown blogger and dating expert Ken Page. Lose weight. Be confident. Keep your partner guessing. At the end of the day, this soulless approach to dating doesn’t lead to love, it leads to insecurity and desperation. In Deeper Dating, Ken Page presents a new path to love. Out of his decades of work as a psychotherapist—and out of his own personal struggle to find love—Page teaches that the greatest magnet for real love lies in our “Core Gifts”—the places of our deepest sensitivity, longing, and passion. Deeper Dating guides us to discover our own Core Gifts and then teaches us to extricate these gifts from the wounds that keep them buried, empowering us to express them with courage, generosity, and discrimination in our dating life. When we do this, something miraculous happens: we begin to attract people who love us for who we really are, we become more selfassured and emotionally available, and we lose our taste for relationships that chip away at our selfesteem. Without losing a pound, changing our hairstyle, or buying a single new accessory, we find healthy love moving closer. Deeper Dating integrates the best of human intimacy theory with timeless spiritual truths and translates them into a practical, stepbystep process.

Summary

KEN PAGE, LCSW, is a psychotherapist and author of the popular Psychology Today blog Finding Love. Ken has led hundreds of workshops on intimacy and spirituality for thousands of participants. Home Grown Adventures in Parenting off the Beaten Path, Unschooling, and Reconnecting with the Natural World Ben Hewitt

When Ben Hewitt and his wife bought a sprawling acreage of field and forest in northern Vermont, the landscape easily allowed them to envision the selfsustaining family farm they were eager to start. But over the years, the land became so much more than a building site; it became the birthplace of their two sons, the main source of family income and food, and ultimately, both classroom and home for their children. Having opted out of formal education, Hewitt’s sons learn through selfdirected play, exploration, and experimentation on their farm, in the woods, and (reluctantly) indoors. This approach has allowed the boys to develop confidence, resourcefulness, and creativity. They learn, they play, they read, they test boundaries, they challenge themselves, they fail, they recover. And these freedoms allow their innate personalities to flourish, further fueling growth and exploration. Living in tune with the natural world teaches us to reclaim our passion, curiosity, and connectivity. Hewitt shows us how small, mindful decisions about daytoday life can lead to greater awareness of the world in your backyard and beyond. We are inspired to ask: What is the true meaning of “home” when the place a family lives is school, school system, and curriculum? When the parent is also the teacher, how do parenting decisions affect a child’s learning? (And exactly how much trouble can a couple of curious boys gallivanting in the wild woods all day get into?) Home Grown reminds us that learning at any age is a lifelong process, and the best “education” is never confined to a classroom. These essays on nature, parenting, and education show us that big change can come from making small changes in how you live on the land, while building a life you love.

Thoughts Are Not the Enemy An Innovative Approach to Meditation Practice Jason Siff

A revolutionary new approach to meditation: a mindfulness of thinking that accepts and investigates the thoughts that arise as you meditate—from the author of Unlearning Meditation. In most forms of meditation, the meditator is instructed to let go of thoughts as they arise. As a result, thinking is often taken, unnecessarily, to be something misguided or evil. This approach is misguided, says Jason Siff. In fact, if we allow thoughts to arise and become mindful of the thoughts themselves, we gain tranquillity and insight just as in other methods without having to reject our natural mental processes. And by observing the thoughts themselves with mindfulness and curiosity, we can learn a good deal about ourselves in the process.

Summary

JASON SIFF was a Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka in the late 1980s, where he began studying Pali and teaching meditation. After he left the Buddhist monastic order and returned to Los Angeles in 1990, he studied counseling psychology and worked as an intern for four years, at the end of which he decided to devote his life to meditation teaching instead of practicing psychotherapy. He cofounded the Skillful Meditation Project around that time, and began teaching meditation as his primary occupation, further developing his own approach to awareness meditation practice, which is called Recollective Awareness. Since then he has been invited to teach by several lay Buddhist sanghas in America, Canada, and Australia. He has also taught at Esalen Institute and the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies.

The Heart Sutra A Comprehensive Guide to the Classic of Mahayana Buddhism Kazuaki Tanahashi, Roshi Joan Halifax

An illuminating indepth study of one of the most wellknown and recited of all the Buddhist texts—by the renowned modern translator. The firstcentury classic Prajnaparamita Hridaya Sutra may be the best known of all the Buddhist Scriptures. It’s a key Zen text, chanted daily by many, but is studied extensively in the Tibetan tradition too. In just about thirtyfive lines, it expresses the truth of impermanence and the release of suffering that results from the understanding of that truth with a breathtaking economy of language. Kazuaki Tanahashi’s guide to the Heart Sutra is the result of a life spent working with it and living it. He outlines the history and meaning and then analyzes the text line by line in its various forms (Sanskrit, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, Mongolian, and various key English translations), providing a deeper understanding of the history and etymology of the elusive words than is generally available to the nonspecialist, yet with a clear emphasis on the relevance of the text to practice. It includes a fresh, modern translation of the text by the author and Roshi Joan Halifax.

Summary

KAZUAKI TANAHASHI is the translator and editor of numerous works by the great Japanese Zen master Eihei Dogen. He is also a renowned calligrapher, a pioneer of the genre of “one stroke painting,” and the creator of multicolor enso (Zen circles). His brushwork has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries, museums, and universities all over the world.

With Heart in Mind Mussar Teachings to Transform Your Life Alan Morinis

A weekly spiritual practice for developing a strong and open heart—drawn from Judaism’s Mussar tradition Mussar draws from the vast storehouse of Jewish wisdom, law, revelation, and text and brings it right home in a way that is completely practical. Judaism teaches that Torah (the collective wisdom of the tradition) provides the blueprint for human experience—and so the more of it we acquire, the more we gain a clearer, truer perspective on life and learn how to navigate its pathways. The phrase “acquiring Torah” is code for the process of internalizing this wisdom to bring about a genuine transformation of the inner self. In short, accessible chapters, this book describes fortyeight methods through which we can acquire Torah—and turns them into a straightforward practice. These methods include cultivating humility, joy, awe, goodheartedness, closeness with friends, not taking credit for oneself, judging others favorably, and so on. The fruits of working through each quality or method are a refined soul and a strong and open heart.

Summary

ALAN MORINIS is the founder and director of the Mussar Institute (www.mussarinstitute.org), an organization that promotes the study of Mussar through study groups, courses, and public talks. He has been a student of

Runaway Realization Living a Life of Ceaseless Discovery A. H. Almaas

For the first time in print, wellknown spiritual teacher A. H. Almaas presents the highest level and most profound teachings of the Diamond Approach on the true nature of reality and the path to enlightenment. The teaching in this book is off the map—because reality itself cannot be captured in a map. In fact, reality is far more alive, far more mysterious than anything we can conceive of. It is always revealing itself by knowing itself; and knowing reality and living it becomes the fulfillment of our life. A. H. Almaas, the originator of the Diamond Approach, here presents a new paradigm for understanding reality: the view of totality. He reveals that our life can become an endless revelation of reality, an adventure with neither beginning nor end. A. H. Almaas has been developing and teaching the Diamond Approach, a spiritual path of selfrealization and maturity based on an original synthesis of modern discoveries in the field of psychology and a new paradigm about spiritual nature, for more than thirty years. If we can say the Diamond Approach has a goal it is to realize the truth at progressively deeper levels until one reaches the ultimate Truth, the Absolute, and to become integrated into that truth so that we are a living presence and embodiment of that truth. The teachings of this path have been unfolding over time, and Runaway Realization presents—for the first time in print—the highest level of teachings in the Diamond Approach in the most profound work by Almaas so far. In this book, Almaas offers a detailed look at the true nature of reality and the nature of enlightenment. He also talks about practice—what it is and what it isn’t, and how practice relates to the process of realization. He looks at what it is to be a human being and what our role is in the totality of the universe. The material includes a discussion of the nature of space and time, as well as a view of more and more subtle levels of realization.

Summary

Feeling Wisdom Working with Emotions Using Buddhist Teachings and Western Psychology Rob Preece

A psychologist and longtime practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism shows how emotions relate to spiritual practice—that our feeling life is truly at the heart of our awakening. The realm of emotion is one of those areas where Buddhism and Western psychology are often thought to be at odds: Are emotions to be valued, examined, worked with as signs leading us to deeper selfknowledge? Or are they something to be ignored and avoided as soon as we recognize them? Rob Preece feels that neither of those extremes is correct. He charts a path through the emotions as they relate to Buddhist practice, showing that though emotions are indeed “skandhas” (elements that make up the illusory self) according to the Buddhist teaching, there is a good deal to be learned from these skandhas, and paying attention to their content contributes not only to psychological health but to deep insight into the nature of reality. He draws on his own experiences with emotions and meditation, through both his training in Tibetan Buddhism and psychotherapy, to show how working with emotions can be a complement to meditation practice.

Summary

ROB PREECE is a contemplative psychotherapist who’s been practicing analysis for twenty years and Buddhism for around thirty. His work focuses on the interface between Buddhism and transpersonal psychology. A former faculty member of Sharpham College, he spent 1980 through 1985 on retreat in the Himalayas, and he’s also an accomplished thangka painter. He leads meditation retreats and workshops that compare Jungian and Buddhist views of psychology. He has published four previous books with Snow Lion.

Advice from a Yogi Padampa Sangye's One Hundred Verses Padampa Sangye, Khenchen Thrangu, Thrangu Dharmaka

This new translation of Padampa Sangye’s One Hundred Verses, beautifully rendered into English, provides timely guidance for people trying to practice the Buddhist path in the workaday world. This commentary on Padampa Sangye’s classic verses of advice to Tibetan villagers of Dingri by the renowned and beloved meditation master Khenchen Thrangu offers guidance for people trying to practice the Buddhist path in the midst of a busy life. These hundred verses, studied for centuries by Tibetans and students of Buddhism, contain all the elements of the Tibetan Buddhist path. Khenchen Thrangu’s lively explication of each stanza brings to light their subtleties and amplifies their relevance to our lives. These two venerable teachers show us that being mindful of the truth of impermanence and the inescapability of death is the key to working with everyday difficulties such as loneliness, craving, family squabbles, competition in business, disagreements with neighbors, and betrayal by friends—as challenging to us now as they have been to meditators for centuries.

Summary

PADAMPA SANGYE was an eleventhcentury Indian yogi and spiritual master (also known as Kamalashila) who traveled widely throughout his life and brought Indian Buddhist teachings to China and Tibet. Best known as Machig Labdron’s teacher, he is counted as a lineage guru by all schools of Tibetan Buddhism and is even asserted in the Tibetan tradition to have been the legendary Bodhidharma. KHENCHEN THRANGU was born in Tibet in 1933. He founded numerous monasteries and nunneries, schools for Tibetan children, and medical clinics. He has taught extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the United States and is the abbot of Gampo Abbey. He was appointed by the Dalai Lama to be the personal tutor for the Seventeenth Karmapa.

Being Taoist Wisdom for Living a Balanced Life Eva Wong

A beautifully clear and accessible explanation of how to live a Taoist life—by reknowned Taoist master Eva Wong. Being Taoist is one of the most readable books on Taoist philosophy available. It shines a light on exactly what it takes to live a Taoist life. Taoist living rests on four pillars—the public, the domestic, the private, and the spirit lives. Not only do Taoists strive to live these four aspects fully and in a balanced way, they also believe there is an outlook and an art to each of them. Eva Wong uses the teachings of Taoist masters (one for each pillar) to explain the essential concepts. She then gives voice to these texts—simplifying them, removing barriers to understanding, and making them completely accessible and relevant to the modern reader. Wong is a clear and enthusiastic guide to this intriguing spiritual Way, and she challenges us to stop, reflect, and ask ourselves: Do we balance the public, domestic, private, and spirit aspects in our lives? Do we emphasize some at the expense of the others? Do we ever think about unifying worldly and spiritual wisdom in our lives?

Cold Mountain (Graphic Novel) The Legend of Han Shan and Shih Te, the Original Dharma Bums Sean Michael Wilson, Akiko Shimojima, J. P. Seaton

A graphic novel portrait of the wild antics and legendary poetry of the “Laughing Pair”—Han Shan and Shih Te, two of China’s greatest poets. This is a smart, funny graphic novel exploring the life, legend, and lore of two of the greatest poets in Chinese history—Han Shan (known as “Cold Mountain”) and Shih Te—who reportedly lived during the Tang dynasty (618906 CE). They were critics of authority (both secular and religious) and champions of social justice who left their poetry on tree trunks and rocks. They were also reportedly monastics, drunks, cave dwellers, immortals, and many other wild and wondrous things. There is much delightful uncertainty about this “Laughing Pair”—including whether or not they actually existed. What is known is that the poetry attributed to them was greatly influential in both China and Japan, and to the Beat writers in the United States during the 1950s and ’60s. Acclaimed manga creator Sean Michael Wilson has brought these renegade poets to life, showing the places they went and the philosophical and meditative aspects of their lives, as well as revealing their humor and wackiness and their penetrating insights into the human condition.Their poetry is interwoven throughout—translations by J. P. Seaton, one of the most respected tranlsators of Chinese poetry in the United States.

The Heart of Unconditional Love A Powerful New Approach to LovingKindness Meditation Tulku Thondup

A new, fourstage approach to the popular Buddhist practice known as lovingkindness meditation, with the aim of finding unconditional love in our own hearts, in our relationships, and in our perception of the world around us. The unconditional love that we all long for—in our own lives and in the world around us—can be awakened effectively with this unique approach to the Tibetan Buddhist practice of lovingkindness meditation. Tulku Thondup gives detailed guidance for meditation, prayers, and visualization in four simple stages that can be practiced in as little as thirty minutes a session. The fourstage format is a brandnew approach being presented for the first time in English, distilled from the author’s lifelong study and practice of authentic, traditional teachings. What if we could experience not only our own body, mind, and heart as a boundless source of lovingkindness, but every particle of the world around us as a beautiful realm filled with the blessing energies of the Buddhas and their celestial abodes? The whole environment would become a miraculous display of unconditional love, wisdom, and power, accompanied by the sweet music of holy prayers and inspirational teachings. This is not just a dream or a fantasy but an effective meditation practice that can bring relief from stress, healing to mind and body, healthier relationships, and a positive new outlook on the world around you. Lovingkindness meditations are a highly effective way to generate positive causation, bring true peace and love into our lives, and release ourselves from habitual suffering. When we train ourselves to desire the happiness and wellbeing of others, with the unconditional love of a mother who cares wholeheartedly for her little ones, we find our whole world pervaded by the positive qualities of joy, peace, and beauty. The training can be compared to sunbathing. As our body absorbs the sun’s heat, it becomes warm and gradually emanates that warmth into our surroundings. In the same way, through devotion and trust in the Buddha of LovingKindness, we immerse our mind in his unconditional love, which we then radiate to those around us. The Heart of Unconditional Love presents this meditation in a new, fourstage format distilled from the author’s lifelong study and practice of authentic, traditional teachings. The meditation can be practiced in as little as thirty minutes a session.

Karma What It Is, What It Isn't, Why It Matters Traleg Kyabgon

A jargonfree explanation of two central teachings of the Buddha: karma and rebirth. By now, we’ve all heard someone say, “It must have been his karma” or “She had bad karma.” But what is karma, really? Does karmic theory say that we are helpless victims of our past? Is all karma bad, or can there be good karma too? Is reincarnation the same as the Buddhist theory of rebirth? In this short and eminently readable book, Traleg Kyabgon answers these questions and more by elucidating the Buddha’s teachings on karma and rebirth. He distinguishes the Buddhist view of karma and rebirth from related notions of karma and reincarnation found in the Hindu tradition, explains why the notion of karma is indispensable to the theory and practice of Buddhism, and demonstrates how karmic theory provides a foundation for morality that doesn’t require belief in God. Throughout he shows how to work with karma intelligently to bring about beneficial changes in the way we relate to our thoughts, feelings, and circumstances.

Nothing Holy about It The Zen of Being Just Who You Are Tim Burkett, Norman Fischer

Zen teachings—infused with elements of memoir—by a popular modern teacher who “grew up” at the feet of two of the great figures who brought Zen to America, Shunryu Suzuki and Dainin Katagiri. He employs his reminiscences of those two great masters as teaching anecdotes. Tim Burkett was twenty when he met Suzuki Roshi, and it was love at first sight. He immediately quit pursuing the career in law to which his illustrious family of jurists inclined him, and became a serious Zen student. He went on to become a licensed psychotherapist and then followed Katagiri Roshi to Minneapolis to become a founder of the Zen scene there. He never left. Now that he’s himself a revered Zen teacher, he’s decided to articulate his own view of Zen. He structures the teaching according to five notnecessarily sequential levels on the road to enlightenment: (1) commitment to the path, (2) studying the self, (3) cultivating compassion and equanimity, (4) perseverance, and (5) emptiness. This is an introduction to Zen teaching that reads like an intriguing memoir, as the author discovers the teaching in the people, places, and experiences he encounters in the course of his practice.

Summary

TIM BURKETT is abbot of the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in Minneapolis, and a dharma heir in the lineage of Dainin Katagiri Roshi and Shunryu Suzuki Roshi.

Parenting in the Age of Attention Snatchers A StepbyStep Guide to Balancing Your Child's Use of Technology Lucy Jo Palladino

Are your kids addicted to technology? Here is a practical, stepbystep guide that gives parents the tools to teach children, from toddlers to teens, how to gain control of their technology use. As children spend more of their time on tablets and smartphones, using apps specially engineered to capture their attention, parents are concerned about the effects of so much technology use—and feel powerless to intervene. They want their kids to be competent and competitive in their use of technology, but they also want to prevent the attention problems that can develop from overuse. Lucy Jo Palladino shows that the key is to help kids build awareness and control over their own attention, and in this guide she gives parents the tools to do exactly that, in seven straightforward, evidencebased steps. Parents will learn the best practices to guide children to understand and control their attention—and to recognize and resist when their attention is being “snatched.” This approach can be modified for kids of all ages. Parents will also learn the critical difference between voluntary and involuntary attention, new findings about brain development, and what puts children at risk for attention disorders.

cardinal rules of comedy have an uncanny resemblance to the rules of building a strong marriage. In Take My Spouse, Please, writer and comedian Dani Klein Modisett artfully lays out 15 axioms of marriage, and not coincidentally, axioms of life. With her trademark humorous, sharp, yet reverent tone, Dani offers a map for navigating your marriage through rough patches, bad jokes, and a bum audience. Take My Spouse, Please shows how these 15 rules of comedy, when applied to marriage, keep you and your spouse connected, enjoying each other and getting through those inevitable tough times. Seeing your primary relationship through the lens of a comic will shake it awake in a way that no other book on marriage will. It helps you see that there is (almost) always room to laugh at a trying situation, and more importantly, with each other. In addition to the author’s lively anecdotes, Dani has interviewed dozens of comedians, comic writers, and marriage counselors to deliver more marriage “material.” The wisdom gleaned from these devotees of both comedy and marriage supports the core premise: humor matters. The celebration of humor that follows—from gutbusting anecdotes to earnest advice—is the heart and soul of the book.

Yoga of the Subtle Body A Guide to the Physical and Energetic Anatomy of Yoga Tias Little

With his expert teachings, philosophical insights, and pragmatic imagery, worldclass yoga instructor Tias Little turns the anatomy of the physical body into a tool for navigating the subtle body. Yoga of the Subtle Body unites practical somatic concepts and wisdom teachings in this guide to the anatomy of the physical, mental, emotional, and subtle bodies. Tias Little is a master teacher, and he brings his precise instruction to the wisdom teachings and philosophy of hatha yoga. He offers us a guided tour of the body’s structure and physical anatomy, then uses this new structural awareness as grounds for exploring the subtle body. In a meaningful and pragmatic way, the book maps the connection between the body and the rich symbolism that pervades the yogic imagination, including the chakras, nadis, and koshas. We come to see how the (yoga) body cannot be seen apart from the psychospiritual forces that animate it. Further, Tias offers readers clear, illuminated instruction for yoga, pranayama, and meditation techniques that apply these bodymind principles. This book is essential reading for all serious students and teachers of yoga. Each chapter focuses on one of the eight key energetic/anatomy centers of the body: feet/base, pelvis, sacrum, belly, diaphragm, heart/lungs, throat, and crown. The book is organized literally from the ground up, and figuratively from physically basic to conceptual/subtle. Each chapter has a list of poses for activating and applying the lessons, guided meditations, and excerpts from yogic texts. These practical exercises allow readers to immediately integrate the chapter’s lessons into their practice.

Zen Chants ThirtyFive Essential Texts in New Translations with Commentary Kazuaki Tanahashi

An introduction to Zen chanting practice, with new accurate and chantable translations of the texts used in Zen centers and monasteries throughout the Englishspeaking world—by the renowned translator of Dogen and Ryokan. Zen chanting practice is an important correlative to zazen. It’s the forceful, dynamic, and energetic counterpart to the more passive practice of sitting meditation, and it’s a powerful expression of the fact that practice happens in a community of others—a community that ultimately includes all beings. Here is a concise introduction to Zen chant for the uninitiated, and a companion for all Zennists who practice chanting, either on their own or in their Zen communities. Kaz begins with an introduction to Zen chant: where the texts come from, how they were practiced historically, how they got transmitted to the Western Zen world, and why the practice is such a powerful thing. He then presents his own translations of thirtyfive chants commonly used in Zen centers, with a deep analysis of their meanings. The recitation of Zen chants helps shape, confirm, and expand one’s meditation experience and mindfulness practice. Thus, by familiarizing oneself with Zen chants, one receives insight into the spirit of Zen.

BHAKTI FLOW: A Training Guide for Yoga and Life by Rusty Wells Illustrated with Black & White Images Throughout, Autumn 2015 A popular San Francisco-based yogi explains Bhakti Flow, a devotional style of yoga that emphasizes a seamless connection between the breath and the movements of the body.

This is a comprehensive guide to the history, study, and practice of Bhakti Flow yoga, a synthesis of Bhakti yoga (the yoga of devotion) and Vinyasa Flow. Wells highlights the devotional, "offering" side of yoga practice and infuses that spirit into asana practice. The book is divided into four sections: 1. Foundations of Bhakti Flow Yoga: an historical overview and basics of contemporary practice. 2. Vibrations of Bhakti Flow Yoga: explains the energetic side of this practice, including subtle body, meditation, sound (Nada Yoga), prana, pranayama, koshas (sheaths of the subtle body), chakras, nadis (energy pathways), and bandhas (energy locks), and more. Offers different levels of practice for those wishing to use sounds in practice and also offers practical instruction on breathing, meditation, and chanting. 3. Bhakti Flow Yoga Lifestyle: Overview of Ayurveda, including the doshas (constitution), nutrition, taste, and digestion, along with recommended Ayurvedic diet guidelines for general health. The section on vegetarianism offers practical advice on making the diet work for you. 4. The Practice of Bhakti Flow Yoga: The section is divided into pose families, which include Basics, Standing Poses, Standing Balance Poses, Core, Arm Balances and Inversions, Backbends, Seated Poses and Twists, and Restorative Poses. The author unpacks each of the yoga poses, with details on both physical and spiritual considerations of each pose. There are also discussions on dristi (point of focus), how to start a home practice, and practical tips for pregnant students or those with high blood pressure. Wells includes two sample sequences, along with recommendations on sequencing in general. The Beginners Sequence is gentle, complete, and accessible for all body types. The Surya Flow 1 Sequence is an example of a strong one-hour vinyasa practice that can easily be a launching pad for more creativity. • Author is a wildly popular teacher: Wells regularly gets one hundred students a class and that he has an opt-in mailing list of

over 10,000 people. His teacher training program is one of the more popular ones in San Francisco and consistently sells out; more than 500 students have gone through the training in the past few years.

• A practice for the spirit--not just the body: Bhakti, the devotional part of yoga, is becoming more important to practitioners as their practice deepens.

• Praise for the author: "Rusty has become one of the significant modern voices of yoga because his profound personal practice has led him into a contemporary passionate translation of many of the sacred threads of wisdom. To stand with innocence and courage in the face of the great unknown and to encourage others to do the same is truly a great service." Rodney Yee, owner of YeeYoga, co-developer of Gaiam Yoga Studio, Yoga Director of Donna Karan's Urban Zen Foundation, co-founder of Piedmont Yoga Studio.

A GUIDED TOUR OF HELL by Samuel Bercholz; illustrated by Pema Namdol Thaye 128 Pages, 4-Color Art Throughout, Autumn 2015 Like Dante's Inferno, this art book-graphic novel is a fearless exploration into the existence of Hell--but from a Buddhist perspective

When Samuel Bercholz became a student of Buddhism in the 1960s, he had no idea what realms would be revealed to him along the path. In this unique book, which is part art book, part graphic novel, and part illuminated manuscript. Bercholz describes his two near death experiences--one of which plunged him into the Hell realm as understood in Buddhist cosmology. There, he toured the various landscapes of Hell, including the hot hells, cold hells, and the borders of Hell, and was introduced to the various denizens residing there.

In prose, and through vivid, powerful artwork by his collaborator, the master painter Tsarak Pema Namdol Thaye, Bercholz fearlessly recounts his stunning experience—and also tells the story of his entry into Buddhism and the rich experiences that lead to his life and work as a publisher and teacher. This book is a veritable Buddhist Dante's Inferno, dealing with the eternal question of the existence of hell in a contemporary interpretation. SAMUEL BERCHOLZ is the founder of Shambhala Publications. He has taught Buddhist philosophy and meditation practice throughout North America, Europe, and Australasia for the past 40 years. TSARAK PEMA NAMDOL THAYE, commonly known as Pema Namdol, is a Master Tibetan Artist who has garnered international acclaim as a painter, sculptor, 3-D Mandala specialist, traditional Tibetan architect, author, and art educator.

HEART OF THE BRUSH: Exploring the World of East Asian Calligraphy by Kazuaki Tanahashi 384 Pages, Autumn 2015 This is a comprehensive and accessible introduction to the history and art of calligraphy as it’s been practiced for centuries in China, Japan, and elsewhere in Asia, that offers the possibility of appreciating it in a hands-on way.

It works as a guide for the beginner hoping to develop an appreciation for Asian calligraphy, for the person who wants to give calligraphy-creation a try, as well as for the expert or afficionado who just wants to browse through and exult in lovely examples. Kaz begins with an introduction to the history of the art: what those ideograms are, how they came to be, how they evolved from primitive symbols into the forms we’re familiar with today. Then he examines the recognizably different styles that have evolved. He then invites the reader to give it a try, giving guidance for materials (both traditional and improvised modern), and then instruction in the basic strokes. Understanding that this is no substitute for having a real teacher (who would, traditionally, have you work on a single stroke for many months, then tell you how unworthy you are to be holding a brush in the first place, and why don’t you just die), it’s a good way to get a feel for how it works, for the way the strokes go together, the rhythm of particular diagrams, and of the satisfaction that comes from doing it well. It’s about skill, but it’s also about state of mind, of course, and a well-brushed ideogram is a reflection of the mind and heart of the person holding the brush. Actually holding the brush enables you to get that in a way reading about it never could. The heart of the book is the long section Kaz calls “Master Samples and Study”: 150 ideographs, from action to zen, each presented in a two-page spread: On each verso page is the ideogram presented in three different styles—each example is chosen for its beauty, and identified by artist when possible. Its meaning, its pronunciation (in Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese), etymology, the pictograph from which it evolved, and other notes of interest. At the bottom of the page the stroke order is shown: the sequence of brush movements, numbered in their traditional order. On each recto page facing is Kaz’s own interpretation of the ideograph, full-page. Then there’s a special section devoted entirely to enso. A section that follows entitled “Inside Calligraphy,” contains subheads: “Aesthetics in Formal Script,” “Asthetics in Cursive Scripts,” “Heart of Creativity,” “Contemporary Art/International Art,” “Continuous Practice,” and covers such issues as compostion, spatial relationships, how to grind ink, and whether a Westerner can really learn the art (he thinks we can). Numerous appendices provide all sorts of useful tangential material. KAZUAKI TANAHASHI, a Japanese-trained calligrapher, is the pioneer of the genre of "one stroke painting" as well as the creator of multicolor enso (Zen circles). His brushwork has been shown in solo exhibitions in galleries, museums, and universities all over the world. Tanahashi has edited several books of Dogen's writings and is also the author of Brush Mind. JAPANESE GHOST STORIES (Graphic Novel) by Sean Michael Wilson; illustrated by Michiru Morikawa; afterword by William Scott Wilson 128 Pages, Illustrated Throughout, Autumn 2015 Eerie traditional Japanese ghost stories retold in a graphic novel format

Over one hundred years ago, the writer Lefcadio Hearn gathered and translated into English a selection of traditional Japanese ghost/mystery stories. They were published as Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. In this new graphic novel, acclaimed manga creator Sean Michael Wilson retells six of these stories. All of them are very well known in Japan, where ghosts and demons are often called yokai, meaning the "mysterious and weird." Today these stories find expression mostly in movies and manga, but they remain rooted in the traditional ghost stories of the Edo era known as Kaidan, which means "recited narrative of strange, mysterious, rare, or bewitching apparitions"

The book includes an afterword by William Scott Wilson, the esteemed translator and editor of Japanese texts and samurai philosophy, who put the stories into historical context. Creepy ghost stories--and more!: This book is an appealing mix of ghosts, myth, magic, and Japanese culture, with bewitching drawings by Michiru Morikawa, illustrator of The Demon’s Sermon on the Martial Arts. Acclaimed manga creator: Sean Michael Wilson is the editor of the critically acclaimed AX: A Collection of Alternative Manga (Top Shelf), which was selected as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Books of 2010. Sean Michael Wilson's 2010 manga treatment of the samurai classic Hagakure led to it being listed as one of the top ten business books by the Wall Street Journal. Praise for AX: A Collection of Alternative Manga: "Within the pages of this greatly anticipated manga anthology are some of the most imaginative, lush, grotesque, and ridiculous comics to come out of Japan. It's an incredible selection."--Publishers Weekly SEAN MICHAEL WILSON is a comic book writer who lives in Japan. He has had more than a dozen books published by U.S., UK, and Japanese publishers, and he often works with Japanese and Chinese artists on manga-style books, such as Hagakure and Yakuza Moon. MICHIRU MORIKAWA is a Japanese illustrator and manga artist and winner of the 2005 International Manga and Anime Award. With Sean Michael Wilson, she has created two graphic novels: Buskers and Yakuza Moon.

THE KISO ROAD by William Scott Wilson 256 Pages, Autumn 2015 Step back into old Japan in this fascinating travelogue of the famous Kiso Road, an ancient route used by samurai and warlords, which remains much the same today as it did hundreds of years ago.

Travel with William Scott Wilson, esteemed translator of samurai philosophy, along Japan's famous Kiso Road (Kisoji in Japanese), an ancient and historic route that runs from north to south through the Kiso Valley in the Japanese Alps. The road was officially established in 1602, but ancient records show that it has been in use since at least 701, probably by merchants and hunters. In the seventeenth century, the road was a route for the daimyo (warlords), to travel on their biennial trips--along with their samurai and porters--to the new capital of Edo (now Tokyo). The natural beauty of the route is renowned--and famously inspired a series of woodblock prints by the artist Hiroshige.

The Kiso Road is a window into old Japan and Wilson shares its rich history and lore, literary and artistic significance, cuisine and architecture. Wilson is a delightful and expert guide. His storytelling ability, vast knowledge of Japanese history, literature, and culture, and warm and readable writing style make this a book that will be treasured as much by armchair enthusiasts as tourists.

• The only contemporary book in English devoted to the Kiso Road: Though the road is described in various travel guides, no

other book exists in English that is devoted to unpacking the history, lore, and culture of this very popular tourist destination. • A practical guidebook as well as a great read: This travel guide through a less-modern, less commercialized part of Japan will

also appeal to armchair enthusiasts who want a window into the historical, literary, and artistic significance of this very important road.

• Best-selling translator and authority on samurai culture and philosophy: William Scott Wilson is the best-selling translator of Japanese and Chinese classics, including Hagakure. He is recognized as the foremost translator of classic samurai texts. In this book, Wilson is the storyteller, rather than translator, and his voice is engaging and distinctive.

WILLIAM SCOTT WILSON is the foremost translator into English of traditional Japanese texts on samurai culture. He received BA degrees from Dartmouth College and the Monterey Institute of Foreign Studies, and an MA in Japanese literary studies from the University of Washington. His best-selling translations include Hagakure, The Book of Five Rings, and Taiko. He is also the author of The Lone Samurai, a biography of the legendary samurai Miyamoto Musashi. THE POWER OF MINDFUL INTENTION: Discovering the Joy of a Life Lived on Purpose by Jan Chozen Bays 240 pages, Autumn 2015 How making a vow--consciously setting an intention--can be a powerful tool for achieving all sort of goals, from the author of the best-selling Mindful Eating.

Making a vow is a powerful mindfulness practice--and all you have to do to tap into that power is set your intention consciously. A vow can be as "small" as the aspiration to smile at someone at least once every day, or as "big" as marriage; as personal as deciding to be mindful when picking up the phone or as universal as vowing to save all sentient beings. It can be deeply spiritual, utterly ordinary, or both. Zen teacher Jan Chozen Bays looks to traditional Buddhist teachings to show the power of vows—and then applies that teaching broadly to the many vows we make. She shows that if we work with vows consciously, they set us in the direction of achieving our goals, both temporal and spiritual.

A best-selling author: Jan Chozen Bays's three books have sold more than 72,000 copies altogether. A powerful jump start for acheiving your goals: Vows, taken on consciously, become like an engine powering you toward a life of focused purpose. You do it anyway--why not do it for a reason? We set intentions all the time unconsciously (the daily Starbucks venti double latte . . .). If you do it consciously, the intention can set you in a direction that leads toward a goal--and it powers you to get there. A broad appeal--way beyond Zennists: Bays's Zen-based teaching is known for being accessible to everyone, whether they have any interest in Zen or not. Praise for Jan Chozen Bays's previous books: "[Bays] brings gentle compassion to the task of integrating mindfulness into a busy life."--Publishers Weekly "With [Jan Chozen Bays's] help, mindfulness practice becomes a powerful yet delightful gateway to the inner peace that is within reach of us all."--Spirituality & Health "Insightfully explores compassion, creativity, faith, and fear."--Library Journal JAN CHOZEN BAYS, MD, is a Zen master in the White Plum lineage of the late master Taizan Maezumi Roshi. She serves as a priest and teacher at the Jizo Mountain-Great Vow Zen Monastery in Clatskanie, Oregon. She is also a pediatrician who specializes in the evaluation of children for abuse and neglect.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS, COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS, AND LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT YOGA by Richard Rosen, 208-224 pages, Autumn 2015 Rosen is a wonderful writer—witty and expressive and a joy to read. He makes complex concepts clear and understandable and this book will give yoga practitioners a thorough background in yoga philosophy.

Richard Rosen has written a collection of short essays on the nuts and bolts of yoga and yoga philosophy that will appeal to those who

are new to the practice as well as experienced practitioners. “The introduction of yoga into this country is usually dated from 1893 and the visit of Swami Vivekananda to the Chicago World’s Fair. At the time, of course, Americans knew relatively little about Yoga, its history, its philosophy and psychology, and its practice. Vivekananda then began the education process. But he was a man on a mission with a personal agenda, and much of the information he relayed was skewed either to fit that agenda or influenced by personal bias; for example, Vivekananda, like so many educated Indians at the end of the nineteenth century, disliked and had a low opinion of Hatha Yoga, the offshoots of which are now the dominant forms of yoga in this country. So we could say that Americans got off on the wrong foot in regard to understanding and appreciating the yoga tradition, and since that time, though we’ve become much more sophisticated about certain aspects of yoga practice, many of our questions are still insufficiently answered and many of our misconceptions are still uncorrected.

This book aims, to the extent that it’s possible, to answer those questions and correct those misconceptions through a series of mostly short essays.”

Rosen divides the book into five or six thematic parts and gives pithy, accessible explanations of the following concepts central to the yoga tradition: the main texts (Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, Yoga Sutra, etc.); the proper pronunciation of commonly mispronounced Sanskrit words (cakra, hatha); the reason behind the spelling of certain Sanskrit words in English (swami for svami, pundit for pandit); yamas and niyamas; the subtle body; the evolution of asanas; pranayama; mudras; and bandhas. He will attempt to answer the question of how old yoga actually is; if it is a religion, a practice, or a science; and explain the symbolism of frequently-recurring numbers (4, 8, 84, 108, etc.) in the yoga tradition; and much more. RICHARD ROSEN is a graduate of the Iyengar Institute of San Francisco and has been teaching yoga since 1987. He is a contributing editor at Yoga Journal magazine and director of and one of the principal teachers at the Piedmont Yoga Studio (cofounded by Rodney Yee), in Oakland, California. Many of Rosen’s practice instructions and technical teachings are posted on the Piedmont Yoga Studio website, www.piedmontyoga.com.
