Aga Khan Development Network, East Africa 2000-2003 Regional Program Director: Reporting to an international board of directors, provided oversight of an Early Childhood Development Program in Kenya, Tanzania & Uganda. Facilitated the work of 200 staff across the three countries; managed international grants in multiple currencies; cultivated international donor relations; led strategic planning, operational coordination, monitoring and evaluation efforts; and served as ambassador to governments and senior development officials locally, nationally and internationally. Our work was featured on a Canadian television documentary series that “follows Canadians who work to promote peace and meet the basic needs of developing countries.”

Moving global engagement, social responsibility and accountability from concept to practice: a. 2005-2010 Associate Director, UBC Centre for International Health Lead UBC’s global health

b. 2004-2007 Developed and implemented an innovative, longitudinal service-learning and community engagement curriculum enabling medical and dental students to acquire the knowledge and skills for addressing health disparities and to gain a better understanding of the social determinants of health. This work resulted in a CIHR funded project—Developing an agenda for reducing oral healthcare disparities in British Columbia, enabling the faculty to develop a comprehensive educational research program in this area.

Funded by the Special Populations Fund grant from the Provincial Government, SACE seeks to ensure that social accountability becomes a fundamental component of medical education at UBC. Using interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches, the aim is to enable key partners - practitioners, academia, community organizations, health authorities, and government - to address health disparities by actively and explicitly engaged in activities that meet priority health concerns of vulnerable populations.

f. 2009-2015 Ethical International Engagement - a University-wide participatory action learning project on ethical international engagement (EIESL) (http://ethicsofisl.ubc.ca): Goal: To raise critical consciousness by educating students to become ethical global citizens, to work for the community and to strive to promote equity and positive change. The initiative engages several faculty and students from across a wide range of disciplines to ensure that international projects are based on a sound ethical foundation:

Accessible Science Initiative (ASI) This project enables the development of science and biotechnology in low and middle-income countries through participatory engagement, capacity building, and exchange of knowledge. ASI initiated its first pilot project in Tolima, Colombia, in collaboration with the University of Tolima and high schools within the region to develop local science education; Nyumbani Social Enterprises (http://nyumbanisocialenterprises.com/) Nyumbani means “home” in Kiswahili. It is a not-for-profit, community-based social enterprise registered in Kenya that works with street youth to create housing security, food security and gainful employment. The directors of Nyumbani Social Enterprises comprise a UBC graduate student affiliated with the EIESL project, and 2 young Kenyans who are former street children;

Live, Originate, Think, Unite, and Shape (LOTUS) A grassroots student initiative that fosters dialogue using an appreciative inquiry framework to focus on the themes of diversity, pluralism and intercultural understanding.

TEACHING

My teaching focuses on pressing health, social, economic, environmental, and ethical challenges that impact the quality of life of people worldwide, particularly those who are most vulnerable. The concepts of social responsibility and social accountability continue to receive increasing attention in the education of health professionals and higher education more generally, particularly within the context of a growing desire to prepare students to be ethical, compassionate and mindful professionals.

Teaching Philosophy: I believe that education must enable learners to be attentive to the tensions between self-interest and social responsibility, and to be mindful of the human consequences of their decisions and actions. Informed by critical pedagogy, I work with learners to delve deeply into issues of social justice, fostering a commitment to civic engagement, ethical leadership, and global social responsibility toward pressing social, economic, environmental and moral problems. Drawing upon experiential and transformative learning principles, my approach to teaching engages the head, hands and heart. 1989-1991 Inner City School Teacher & Adult Educator, Toronto, Canada Taught at one of the Model Schools for Inner Cities, an initiative that ensures students have equal opportunities they need to thrive; and taught a civics course to new immigrants to help them flourish in their new country. Course examines critical issues in healthcare around the patient-doctor relationship, healthcare systems, ethics, cultural competency and social determinants of health. Responsibilities: curriculum management; recruitment and training of tutors; student assessment and remediation; and ongoing course development and innovation; ensuring compliance with accreditation standards. PACS 410/420 Professionalism & Community Service. (2005-2007) Created a new longitudinal Service-Learning Course for the DMD Program. Students learn to work with communities to jointly identify priorities, develop, apply, and evaluate a health promotion initiative, demonstrate ethical reasoning and critical thinking. ORNT 400 Introduction to Diversity and Equity. (2004-2015) Introduction to diversity, inclusion, equity and professionalism mandates of the medical school. SPPH 523/INDS 502S Global Health & Human Security: (2012-2015) Graduate level course examining critical issues in global health that are fundamental to achieving human security. Topics include poverty, equity and non-medical determinants of health, global change and infectious diseases, environmental health, occupational health, conflict, and global governance. DPAS CSLO/SDPO Community Service-Learning Option/Self-Directed Project Option. (2007-2015) The Community Service Learning Option promotes learning and development before the start of clinical clerkships in 3rd year. The aim is to foster social accountability by actively engaging communities, learners, and practitioners in study, service and scholarship through shared responses to health determinants and inequities.

2013-2014 Research Director of the St. Paul’s Family Medicine Residency Site The St. Paul’s Site is connected to a dedicated group of Family Practice preceptors who serve the urban core and inner city. St. Paul’s Hospital is a tertiary referral hospital located in downtown Vancouver that maintains strong ties with the community. The site trains primary care physicians with a broad range of interests including full-service Family Practice, Palliative Care, HIV/AIDS, Addictions, Aboriginal, and Global Health. It is affiliated with Vancouver Coastal Health Authority and all residents spend at least one month at Three Bridges Community Health Centre, an inner city primary care clinic. St. Paul’s is also home to the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS and is a provincial quaternary referral center for Cardiology and Cardiothoracic Surgery related illness. There is a leading-edge Palliative Care Service through which all our residents rotate, as well as highly regarded departments of Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Emergency Medicine.

Civic Engagement Projects Mentored:

2007-2015 UBC Students for Cross Cultural Health Care (SCCHC) http://sites.google.com/site/ubcscchc/ Mentor medical students to develop SCCHC as an initiative that helps prepare them to address the complexities of cross-cultural care, and provides hands-on opportunities for them to practice cross-cultural competencies. 2008-2009 International Service-Learning and the CanMEDS Health Advocate Role Medical students express increasing interest in pursuing international experiences in low-income

countries where there are pronounced inequities in health and socio-economic development. With funding from the Northwater Foundation, I developed an international service-learning experience that enabled medical students to undertake a social justice-oriented approach.

Mentor medical students to develop a participatory, school-based youth action initiative focused on promoting youth mental health. Medical students work with school teachers, clinicians, policy makers, administrators, educators and community organizations to develop and implement a participatory action project aimed at reducing stigma and improving access to mental healthcare for youth. (http://www.bcmj.org/mds-be/reducing-stigma-and-improving-access-mental-health-care-youth) 2011-2015 Teddy Bear Clinic http://mdprogram.med.ubc.ca/2014/05/06/clinic-time-for-teddy-bears/ Mentor medical students to develop and implement community based health advocacy initiative that takes place at various community centers in Vancouver that serve socioeconomically vulnerable families. The aim is to work with young children and their parents to help them prepare for visits to healthcare clinics. Activities include introduction to medical equipment, talking with healthcare providers and having their teddy bear clinically examined and vaccinated.

2012-2014 Medical Students Against Human Trafficking Mentor medical students in partnership with civil society organizations (Office to Combat Trafficking in Persons; Surrey Memorial Forensic Nursing; Children of the Street; and Chrysalis Network) to develop and implement a series of health advocacy workshops aimed at developing the capacity of future health and human service professionals to respond to the growing problem of human trafficking in Canada. 2013-Present Social Medicine Network BC http://globalhealth.med.ubc.ca/2014/03/the-social-medicine-network-bc-smbc/ Mentor medical residents and students in establishing an interprofessional network to develop collective capacity of knowledge and skills around the social determination of health, develop socially and community responsive practices, and improve healthcare systems. 2013-2015 Youth Health Education Project: What you want to know from your doctor, but are afraid to Ask Adolescent children have growing health concerns that they do not raise with their family doctor. This health education project enables medical students and residents to serve as a resource to schoolchildren, many of whom do not have regular access to a family doctor.

Global Engagement Education:

Student Directed Seminars Student Directed Seminars allow senior undergraduate students to initiate and coordinate learning experiences under the supervision of a faculty member. I have supervised 8 Student Directed Seminars and 3 Directed Studies Courses. The following HESO courses were developed out of my research on Ethics of International Engagement & Service Learning Project 1) Developing Internationalists: Critical Approaches to Service; 2) Ethics in International Development http://ethicsintdev.wordpress.com/about/; 3) Topics in International Service Learning;

Identified as one among “some of the most outstanding professors at UBC” I am invited to give an opening lecture that will inspire, provoke and challenge students to consider their responsibilities as global citizens. UBC Global Resource Systems (2010-2015) Invited lecturer for the GRS 290/390/490 course – Global Issues in Cultural Context – that prepares students in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems to gain a deep understanding of global issues. It is taken prior to the students’ international service-learning and studying abroad placement. I provide two 3-hour lectures per semester on the topic of ethical international engagement.
