H ockey legend Hector “Toe” Blake holds the distinction of being the only coach in NHL history to lead his team to Stanley Cup victory for five consecutive years. More than 50 years later, and in a very different arena, Shafik Hirani’s excel- lent coaching ability led to an unprecedented fifth win as Investors Group’s National T.O.P. Leader. While building a successful hockey team and building a success- ful practice certainly have their differences, Shafik also sees a number of similarities: “The coach of a hockey team relies on the commitment and performance of his team on the ice,” he said. “From that perspective, I am grateful to share this award with my entire staff, At Your Service (AYS) support and mentors throughout the years.” As a 16-year veteran from Calgary South, Shafik started his “coaching” career in 1999 when he became a Division Director, but unlike a pure coaching role, Division Directors are called upon to be player-coaches, by both managing clients and recruit- ing and mentoring new Consultants. Shafik has built an impressive client base with more than $100 million in assets, earning him President’s Elite status for being in the top one per cent of our Consultants for five consecutive years along with winning the Sales Achievement/Business Achievement Award in 2008 and 2010. Yet, Shafik finds a greater sense of satisfaction from the success of his team members. In 2010 he won the Pillar Performance Award for having the highest number of Pillar Award qualifiers in the country. “Absolutely nothing makes me more proud than that accomplish- ment,” he said. “We all have a purpose in life and I truly believe that purpose should not be self-gratifying. It must be to make a difference in other peoples lives.” In that spirit, Shafik found new inspiration in 2010 when he and his wife Beth welcomed their first son, Avery, into the world. “As I’ve been watching Avery grow, I’ve reflected much on my relationship with Investors Group,” he said. “Investors Group was around 100 years before I was born and will be around 100 years after I die. With that knowledge, I owe it to myself to conduct myself in a manner that reflects a legacy. We all do.” Shafik Hirani becomes National T.O.P.
