Work anniversaries are a great time to reflect on the year that passed and think about what one wants to accomplish in the next year. Over my first year, we have introduced new programs, worked closely with the kitchen to increase offerings, started Town Hall Meetings, trained new staff, and many more initiatives. It has been such a pleasure getting to know everyone and welcoming new residents to our community. I am looking forward to the continued growth of Park Plaza. We are happy to announce that the pipe replacement project is going along on schedule. Phase 2 will begin on schedule – residents will be assigned to move on either June 3rd or June 4th and will be relocated for about a month. During the week of June 10th, all residents will be having the outside of their windows washed. Two workers from the company escorted by a Park Plaza Staff Member will go into each apartment, remove the screens, clean the windows and put the screens back on. It should take about 20 minutes per apartment. We are very much looking forward to the summer as we plan many outdoor outings, concerts and programs. What Are the Best Sug Substitutes f Diabetics?

When an older adult is diagnosed with diabetes, you may immediately start thinking about ways to reduce the amount of sugar they eat. One way to do that is with sugar substitutes. Th e problem is that there are so many diff erent kinds of artifi cial sweeteners that you may be uncertain which one to buy. Th e truth is that you may need to get more than one kind of artifi cial sweetener depending on just how you plan to use it.

Kinds of Sugar Substitutes How you are going to use the sugar

substitute is important because some artifi cial sweeteners don’t work well in baking. It’s also important to know that sugar substitutes cause diff erences in baked goods, such as:

* Lighter fi nished color. * Lower volume in quick breads, cakes, and

muffi ns. * Diff erent texture. * Slightly diff erent taste.

* Altered cooking time. With that in mind, there are several kinds

of sugar substitutes to choose from. Some of them are:

Saccharin: Saccharin is sold under the brand names Sweet n’ Low and Sugar Twin. It’s available in small packets that can be added to hot and cold drinks.

Stevia: Stevia is oft en called a “natural” sweetener. While it comes from a natural source, the stevia plant, it is actually highly-processed since it goes through a complicated purifi cation process.

Aspartame: Aspartame, which you may be familiar with as Equal or Nutrasweet, is a sweetener you should not use in baking

because it breaks down and loses its sweetness when heated. It is best used as a substitute for table sugar to add to drinks or a bowl of cereal.

Sucralose: Sold as Splenda, sucralose can be used in baking or as a table sweetener.

Are ey Safe? In the past, there was some suggestion that

they may cause health problems. However, there is a great deal of research that indicates they are safe. However, they really have no nutritional value, so it’s still best to use them in moderation.

Caregivers can help modify your diet by using sugar substitutes. An elder care provider can off er a packet of sweetener for coff ee or tea rather than getting out the sugar. Caregivers can also cook healthy meals and an occasional dessert using a sugar substitute instead of sugar.

If you or a loved one would benefi t from having a caregiver in your home, please contact GENTLE HOME SERVICES at 773-743-4337.

Over the next few months many of you are moving to a temporary apartment while Park Plaza does some necessary construction. Keep in mind that moving into a new place can be disorienting!

Let’s go over a few basic safety tips in the home to make your transition safer and more comfortable.

☑ Take some time to unpack right away so it feels more like home☑ Be aware of your temporary apartment in relation to dining

room and programing. Is it closer or farther than previously?☑ Bathroom: do you need a bar next to toilet or a raised toilet seat.☑ Shower: do you have a curtain or a glass door, do you need that

changed in your new apartment☑ Is your front door too heavy for you to manipulate?☑ Do you have a bath bench or chair that needs to be moved to

your temporary apartment ☑ Make sure you carry a portable phone or cell phone with you or

have the use of the call button

☑ Do you have a chair that lift s you up?☑ Check for electrical cords- they need to be out of the way to

avoid tripping☑ Keep an eye out for clutter especially if it blocks

pathways to bathroom☑ Use a night light in your bedroom and bathroom☑ Keep frequently used items in accessible drawers or

cabinetsEven though this is a temporary move- safety comes rst!!

Consider having a Physical or Occupational Th erapist come to your new apartment and do a home safety assessment. You can fi nd us in the RPI therapy room on the fi rst fl oor. We are there for you!!

The famous poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning wrote: “How do I love thee, let me count the ways.”

These past few months have had so many lovely things for me to count. So many first meetings, so many lovely new faces and names. Eight remarkable days of Passover, four moving Seders. So many warm welcomes and amazing beginning to new relationships. We are also in the midst of another counting, the counting of the Omer. We count 49 days from the second day of Passover until the Holiday of Shavous. On Shavous we celebrate the giving of Torah at Sinai and the receiving of the Ten Commandments, yet another counting. When we count the days, we show our appreciation and anticipation for the Torah. We Show Hashem that we are excited and ready to yet again accept the Torah and celebrate it with love.

When, I count all these numbers and so many firsts here in Park Plaza, I too am filled with love. So much love for so many milestones and holidays. Love to Hashem for sending me to such a special place and so much affection for all the warmth and care that has been shown to me and my family as we adjust and move fully to Chicago. On behalf of Miriam and myself thank you for everything! May we continue to count many milestone and happy occasions together and continue to count our blessings. Keep making Park Plaza such a wonderful community. We are counting on you!
