    Parshat Tetzaveh/Zachor February 23, 2013 13 Adar, 5773

A large part of ParshasTetzaveh is devoted to thegarments of the Kohanim .One of the Bigdai Kehunahis the Choshen Mishpat. The Choshen Mishpat, orChoshen as it is commonlycalled, is a Breastplatethat contains the names ofthe shevatim of Israel, engraved on twelvestones. The Urim V'Tumimis a writing of the ExplicitName of G-d, that wasplaced into the Choshen. The Urim V'Tumim gavethe Choshen the ability toconvey communicationsfrom HaShem . TheChoshen, which the KohenGadol wore, served aninvaluable role. Wheneverthe Jewish nation wasfaced with a critical issueaffecting their nationalwelfare (for example, aquestion of whether to goto war or not), the KohenGadol would seek the

advice from HaShem andthe answer would appearon the Choshen.

I remember as a child, thinking that this was thegreatest thing in theworld. "If only I had myown Urim V'Tumim, Iwould pass all my testsand I would know if theYankees would win" - itwas a wonderful dream. Ofcourse, the Urim V'Tumimwas not used for suchfrivolous matters. It was

    used for matters of utmost

importance. The Ramba"n givesus an insight into the workingsof the Choshen and the UrimV'Tumim: The word Urim means'lights'. Whenever the KohenGadol needed to receive ananswer, the letters of the namesof the Tribes, inscribed on thetwelve stones of the Breastplatewould illuminate. That was the'Urim' part. But the letters wouldbe scrambled. It was not assimple as reading out: G-O T-O

W-A-R. One needed to break thecode -- what were the lights ofthe letters of the Breastplatesaying? The Ramba"n explainsthat there are secondary holynames called the 'Tumim'. These'Tumim' gave the Kohen Gadolthe ability to interpret the 'Urim'.The ability to use the 'Tumim' tointerpret the lights of the 'Urim'was a form of Ruach HaKodesh.

The Talmud says [Berachos 31a]that, in fact, there were timeswhen the Kohen could not figureout what the letters were saying.

There is a famous Gemara aboutthe High Priest Eli, who misreadthe letters of the Urim v'Tumimregarding Chana. Eli read theletters appearing on theBreastplate to be Shin-Cof-Reish-Hay (Shikorah -- drunkenone) when in fact the correctreading was Cof-Shin-Reish-Hay(Kesheira -- worthy one). At thatprecise moment, Eli lacked thepower of 'Tumim'. The sefer BaisAv, by Rav Elyakim Schlesinger, mentions that nowadays thereare people who are blessed withthe power of 'Urim'. What is the

    power of 'Urim' nowadays? Orah

Rabbi Frand on Parshas Tetzaveh/Zachor[Light] -- This refers to Torah. There are people who aresteeped in Torah, haveknowledge of Torah and canbring proofs from Torah. Butnot everyone who has thepower of 'Urim' -- who looksat the Torah and sees thelight of the Torah also hasthe power of 'Tumim'. It doesnot immediately follow thatmost anyone has the powerto interpret what the Torah is

in fact saying. The peoplewho have the power of the'Tumim' are a few treasuredindividuals in eachgeneration. That is a specialability. Many people haveUrim. They see the Torah andcan proclaim something isHaShem's will and this is "theopinion of Torah". But that isnot always the case. To trulyperceive Da'as Torah, oneneeds the power of 'Tumim'.Many times, people sincerelyand honestly say "This is the'Urim' -- this is what the

Torah wants," but sometimesthese people do not have thepower of 'Tumim'.

A profound example of this isfound in the Haftorah fromParshas Zachor [Samuel I;Chapter 15]. We see anunbelievable thing in thisHaftorah. Shmuel HaNovi toldShaul HaMelech to go anderadicate Amalek. ShmuelHaNovi was extremelyexplicit. Shaul was instructedto have no mercy. He was tokill man, woman, and child.

He was to kill out all the

animals -- camels to donkeys! Shaul HaMelech went to warand smote Amalek, but he had mercy on the King of Amalekand on the animals. HaShem became angry with Shaul andordered Shmuel HaNovi to strip the monarchy from him. When Shmuel came to deliver this message to Shaul, theKing came out to greet the prophet. Shaul HaMelech's firstwords to Shmuel HaNovi were "I have fulfilled the word ofHaShem." How is this possible? Shaul HaMelech could notbring himself to kill them all. He had mercy. So the firstwords out of his mouth should have been, "Shmuel, I am

sorry. Shmuel, I blew it -- I have a soft heart." However, that is not what Shaul said. Shaul HaMelech bragged aboutfulfilling the letter of the law! HaShem made a clearinventory of what he wanted accomplished. Shaul wassupposed to kill all the animals. He did not kill all theanimals. How could he claim he fulfilled the word ofHaShem? There can only be one answer. Shaul HaMelechbelieved that this was the Will of HaShem. He believed thatby saving the animals and eventually sacrificing them, thatwould be a sanctification of HaShem's Name. Shaul believedthat this is what HaShem really intended. This was Shaul'sunderstanding , based on the power of the 'Urim'.

This is a classic example of having the power of 'Urim' butnot the power of 'Tumim'. A person can sometimes beblinded, whether it is for reasons of personal motive or outof fear of people or for any other reason. For some reason,Shaul HaMelech misinterpreted the 'Urim'. He looked at thewords of the Torah and said, 'This is what HaShem means;this is what HaShem wants' - - and yet was completelywrong.

The power of 'Tumim' is reserved for the select few. That iswhy we need a leader; that is why we need a Rav; that iswhy we need a Rosh Yeshiva. As much as we think we maybe able to figure out the 'Urim' on our own, we still needguidance -- because we do not always know the 'Tumim'.We can be well intended and think we have textual proofs, but if we do not have the guidance of a person who is giftedwith the insight of 'Tumim', we can make tragic errors. Theend of the book of Shoftim contains one of the most sordid

incidents in Jewish history, that of the Concubine in Givah. The aftermath of that incident was that the other shevatimgathered against Benyamin. They were justifiably outraged. They wanted to fulfill the will of HaShem and ensure that

justice was served. However, after the fact, they realizedthat they had gone too far. They repented, they offeredsacrifices, and they tried to make amends to preserve theTribe of Benyamin. If their intentions had been noble, howdid it happen that they became so carried away with theiractions? The last verse of the book of Shoftim provides an

answer. "In those days there was no king in Israel, every mandid as he saw fit in his own eyes." That is the bottom line. Onecan be well intended. He can act for the sake of Heaven. He canprove that "this is what it says to do in the Torah". He can seethe lights of the 'Urim' as clear as day. But if he does not havethe 'Tumim,' he will not know how to interpret the 'Urim'. He willnot know how far to go and what to do. He will not know when tostop and when to go. When do such things happen? When thereis no 'king' in Israel. Unless we have a bona fide leader, the worstof things can happen. The power of the 'Urim' and the 'Tumim'combined is reserved for the few of a generation. HaShem shouldhave Mercy upon us and direct us to the guidance of the peoplewho not only have the power of the 'Urim' but also the power ofthe 'Tumim.'
