South Carolina’s Only STEM Certified Catholic School
SGGCS Reopening Plan Summary
REOPENING GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOLS STATEMENT
SGGCS recognizes the unique challenges that COVID-19 (coronavirus) has had on the community, state,
and nation. Therefore, and by the Diocese of Charleston’s requirement, SGGCS has created a Reopening
Plan that will serve as the guidelines and protocols that parents, students. teachers, staff,
administrators, and community stakeholders will adhere to and follow. This Reopening Plan is fluid and
will be updated when and if necessary, especially as information from the Diocese of Charleston, state
of South Carolina, Center for Disease Control, and/or other health organizations, government officials,
and community experts becomes available.
FACILITIES, HEALTH AND SAFETY, AND DAILY OPERATIONS
Physical Distancing: Physical distancing will be utilized throughout the school day to the best of our ability, including appropriate spacing between desks/chairs. There are exceptions such as classroom center time, lab/group work, and recess where spacing becomes more challenging. Proper protocols for working closely together will be adhered to, especially wearing a mask. Temperature Check/Health Screening: All faculty, staff, and students will have their temperatures taken and a general health screening will be conducted prior to entrance to SGGCS.
Parents will be asked to screen their son/daughter daily before leaving for school and not send them if they are feeling ill or have a temperature of 100.4 or greater.
Clean Facilities: To protect the health and safety of students and staff to the best of its abilities, SGGCS
will provide cleaning products and follow updated guidelines from government agencies on disinfecting,
sanitizing, and cleaning the school facilities. Cleaning supplies will be available through the maintenance
department.
SGGCS will be applying a product called PermaSafe in early August to surfaces in the school
building and are currently exploring Path-Away, which was used in the SGGCS Luffa-Gourd Soap
Project, in the school’s ventilation system.
2
Air Circulation: Classroom doors to the hallway will often be left open throughout the school day to help
improve air circulation. HVAC fans will run continuously to circulate air and filters are currently being
upgraded to MERV-13.
Personal Protection Equipment: Masks will be required for all students and staff when out of
classrooms and learning spaces and at all other times when a minimum of six feet cannot be maintained.
In some classroom environments, teachers and staff may ask students to keep their masks on depending
on the situation. Students and staff should regularly have with them at least two masks every day.
Cafeteria: The cafeteria will not be used as a lunchroom to begin the school year. It will instead be
transformed into a learning space. All students will eat in their classroom, their assigned space, and/or
outside (weather permitting) until further notice. Picnic lunches for all classes will be encouraged.
Restrooms: Restrooms throughout the building will be monitored by school and maintenance staff. A
regular cleaning scheduled throughout the day is being developed.
Soap and Hand Sanitizer: Hand soap and hand sanitizer will be available for students, staff, and visitors.
Arrival and Dismissal: Arrival times may be extended to begin the year to accommodate the health
screenings. Dismissal will begin at 2:45 pm, but the process may run longer than normal because of
adjustments being made to how students exit the building.
Recess and Playtime: SGGCS is planning staggered recess times to help limit the number of students on
the playground and fields at one time. Outside play is still very much a part of the student experience.
ACADEMICS, INSTRUCTION/STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, & LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT(S)
Academics: SGGCS will continue to provide a well-rounded academic program for all students. Though
the schedule will be different, students should continue to expect core classes, high-interest classes, and
special areas/related arts as a part of the regular school day and experience. The schedule is currently
being developed and based on recommendations from the Diocese of Charleston as well as any further
updates to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) guidelines for reopening schools.
Scheduling: To the greatest extent possible, SGGCS will minimize student transitions during the day.
Doing so may, and most likely will, require significant alterations to the traditional SGGCS schedule and
model.
Class Size: Each available learning space in the main school building, Parish Life Center, and church will
be measured to ascertain its square footage and be divided by 36, as currently recommended by the
Center for Disease Control (CDC). This will help to determine class size in that space, including
teacher(s), classroom assistants, and other support staff.
Virtual Learning: Parents may opt for their child/children to learn remotely. Teachers and support staff
will develop individual strategies along with the administration to address those students who are
learning from their home locations. Some strategies include, but are not limited to, recording the
teaching/instruction taking place (i.e. five to twenty minutes of core instruction), students learning from
home “attending” a live teaching session with the class (i.e. through Zoom), or meeting with the
student(s) online during a particular part of the day.
3
Attendance: The student attendance policy is currently being rewritten to allow for absences when
students are feeling ill and/or uncomfortable attending school in-person due to health reasons
(attendance through virtual learning will be required).
Special Education/Special Needs: Students with IEPs, 504 Plans, Catholic Action Plans (CAPs), and/or
other accommodations/modifications should have their plans/goals reviewed prior to the start of the
2020-2021 school year. Based on these plans and goals, a schedule for services will be created by the
Special Education Coordinator. SGGCS will work closely with the local therapy groups, school district,
and academic coaches to administer the plan and monitor the goals. Therapists, support staff from the
school district, and academic coaches must adhere to SGGCS’ COVID-19 protocols as well as the Safe
Haven and safe environment protocols.
Individuals who are providing a service to students (student screening, title services, individual
student help, small group help, therapy, academic coaching, counseling, ESOL, etc.) and
authorized by the school administration are permitted into the school and classroom, but must
follow all SGGCS health guidelines, including temperature and health screenings, and adhere to
the safe environment protocols.
MAP Testing: SGGCS anticipates the window for all MAP testing to open on August 24 and remaining
open through most of September.
MASS, THE SACRAMENTS, AND SPIRITUAL/RELIGIOUS EVENTS
Mass: SGGCS will follow the protocols of the Diocese of Charleston and from St. Gregory the Great
Catholic Church for Masses. At this time, the pastor has advised that there will be two school Masses
celebrated each Friday.
Chapel: SGGCS anticipates providing for Chapel during the school year. Currently, available spaces are
being reviewed or alterations to the Chapel schedule will be planned.
Spiritual and Religious Events: In-person spiritual and religious events, such as the Living Rosary, class
retreats, etc., will be postponed until further notice. Opportunities for virtual attendance to these
events will be considered.
ATHLETICS
SCISA Phases: SGGCS will follow the SCISA Phases to implementing full competition athletics. Though
the school is not a part of or participates in SCISA, the three phases outlined by the association provide a
guidance for schools to begin/reopen their sports programs.
Intramural Sports: If SGGCS cannot proceed with a full competition schedule for any or all of its sports
programs, an in-house or intramural sports program may be evaluated.
SGGCS continues to plan for Cross Country, Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Basketball, and Golf
for the 2020-2021 school year.
Students in Grades 5 and 6 may still have the opportunity to participate in JPII athletics and will
be determined by the Athletic Directors at SGGCS and JPII.
4
GROUP GATHERINGS AND BUILDING USAGE
General Group Gatherings: All group gatherings and special activities will be reviewed, however, the
current recommendation from the Diocese of Charleston is to cancel all in-person gatherings. The pastor
has all final say for group gatherings.
Assemblies: There will be no school-wide assemblies for the first semester (through to January 2021).
Fall Events: All first semester events, including Back-to-School Night, Running of the Halls, the Christmas
Program, etc., will be reviewed to determine if they can be held virtually, should be
cancelled/postponed, or rescheduled. Fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held virtually.
Annual Auction/Fundraiser: This falls under the second semester and is being currently planned for
some time between the end of January and the end of March.
FIELD EXPERIENCES AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Field Trips and Experiences: All field trips and field experiences will be cancelled or postponed for the
first semester (through to January 2021). No trips will be scheduled.
Virtual Field Trips and Experiences: All teachers will be encouraged to plan a virtual field trip for their
class(es). These may be real-time experiences as well as pre-recorded field experiences.
School Sponsored Clubs and Activities: These groups may meet during or immediately after school, only
at the school, if appropriate social distancing protocols are followed and in place.
TRANSPORTATION
Buses: The SGGCS bus will not be used for the first semester. JPII is responsible for their own buses that
pick up and drop off at SGGCS, including the athletics bus.
Carpooling: Carpooling to and from school will be strongly discouraged. It is advised that parents/guardians bring and pick up their own children at SGGCS.
COMMUNICATIONS AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
SGGCS Staff: Staff will receive support and training on reopening guidelines and others that are recommended or required to be followed (i.e. CDC, Diocese of Charleston, SGG Catholic Church, etc.). Department of Social Services: The PK program at SGGCS is bound by the rules and regulations of DSS. All policies and procedures directed to faith-based registered programs will be followed. Department of Health and Environmental Controls: SGGCS follows procedures and recommendations from DHEC, including updates on school shot records (immunizations) and anticipate an annual inspection of the records in the fall. Drills: All emergency drills will take place as required and will follow social distancing guidelines as best as possible, understanding limitations and available space. The use of face masks will be required during drills.
5
Positive COVID-19 Results: If a student or staff member tests positive for COVID-19, SGGCS will respect privacy, but also ensure that protocols and procedures for communication have been followed, including communication with the Diocese of Charleston. Any individual who tests positive will be required to quarantine for a minimum of fourteen days and may only return with a note from their healthcare provider.
A positive test result does not mean that a class should close and self-quarantine. Students who test positive must remain away from campus as written above. SGGCS will continue its in-person academic and spiritual programs keeping in mind masking, social distancing, cleaning, and washing hands to help limit the spread. Families will be given the option to have their children virtually learn until a period of time has passed.
Open Communication: As much as it is expected that SGGCS will communicate with the parent community, so too will parents be expected to communicate with the school what is happening at home. Parents should take all necessary precautions and preventative measures at home and inform the school if the family has been exposed to or is experiencing an illness.

ST. GREGORY THE GREAT CATHOLIC SCHOOL
REOPENING PLAN
2020-2021
South Carolina’s Only STEM Certified Catholic School
7
REOPENING GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOLS STATEMENT
SGGCS recognizes the unique challenges that COVID-19 (coronavirus) has had on the community, state,
and nation. Therefore, and by the Diocese of Charleston’s requirement, SGGCS has created a Reopening
Plan that will serve as the guidelines and protocols that parents, students, teachers, staff,
administrators, and community stakeholders will adhere to and follow.
Facilities and Building Considerations
Signage: Exterior and interior signage communicating how to stop the spread and describing
symptoms of COVID-19 and good hygiene will be posted in the school and Parish Life Center.
Directional signage on the floors or elsewhere will be posted for staff and students to follow.
Communal Areas: Students, staff, and visitors should not gather in communal areas in the
school or Parish Life Center (i.e. lobby, restrooms).
Social Distancing: 6 feet of physical distancing is in effect until further notice and
markings on the floor may be implemented to help provide a visual for students, staff,
and visitors.
Water Fountains: Water fountains will be closed to all students, staff, and visitors until
further notice.
Water Bottles: Students and staff will be encouraged to bring their own water
bottles to school on a daily basis. Students should be afforded the opportunity
to refill their bottles in the sinks located in the classroom with teacher
supervision and permission.
Hallway: Hallway traffic will be limited to the right side of the hallway, and social
distanced as best as possible. Markings and direction arrows on the floor may be used
to help provide direction and proper spacing.
Stairwells: Students, staff, and visitors will use the east wing stairwell to go upstairs and
the west wing stairwell to go downstairs.
Elevator: The elevator is to be used only by staff, students, and visitors who have an
idenfitied need or disability.
Lockers/Cubbies: Students may not gather at lockers or cubbies. Individual students will
be sent one at a time or students whose lockers or cubbies are at least six feet apart will
be permitted to attend to their locker or cubby. Depending on available space, students
may be assigned to one locker or cubby. Hand washing or hand sanitizing before/after
visiting the locker/cubby should be a part of the classroom rules.
8
Tardy: If more than one family is late to SGGCS, they must remain outside until the
family that is in the lobby departs.
Cafeteria: The cafeteria will not be used as a cafeteria to begin the school year. It will
instead be transformed into a learning space.
Lunch: All students will eat in their classroom, their assigned space, and/or
outside (weather permitting) until further notice.
Classrooms: Each teacher/staff member will design a classroom learning environment
that increases the space between desks/tables/chairs/students by 6 feet and implement
classroom rules that adhere to this guideline.
Spacing Guidelines: SGGCS will currently follow the CDC guidelines of 6 ft of
spacing (social distancing) as best as possible, including in the classroom,
hallway, etc. There are exceptions such as classroom center time, lab/group
work, and recess where spacing becomes more challenging. Proper protocols
for working closely together will be adhered to, especially wearing a mask. For
recess, please reference information located later in this section and in
Appendix C.
Furniture: SGGCS will remove any classroom furniture beyond what is needed to
accommodate the maximum number of students assigned to a class/classroom.
Items from Home: As few items from home as possible should be brought to school on
a daily basis. Students should only really need their bookbag (and school issued
electronic device, if available), lunchbox, and jacket, if necessary. Those items should be
cleaned at home regularly.
School Supplies and Home Supplies: Students and families should anticipate
that students will be asked to keep their school supplies at school. These would
include pencil pouches, markers, art products, etc. and use home supplies to
complete schoolwork when at home. Students who attend Extended Day Care
(EDC) may use their school supplies while in Study Hall and then may receive
permission to put it back in their classroom at the end of Study Hall or when
they sign out from EDC.
Arrival and Dismissal
Temperature Check/Health Screening: All faculty, staff, and students will have their
temperatures taken prior to entrance to SGGCS. A general health screening (i.e. does the child
or adult appear to be ill? Are symptoms currently being displayed?) will be conducted for all
persons about to enter the school building or Parish Life Center.
Arrival
Faculty and Staff: Faculty and staff will have their temperatures read prior to 7:30 am by a
member of the front office or appointed representative.
9
Students: Students will have their temperatures taken in the car, in the carpool/fire lane, by a
member of the front office or appointed representative.
Arrival Time: SGGCS will open its doors at 7:30 am and will extend the Tardy Bell until
8:00 am, until further notice.
Temperature Rule: No one will be admitted into the building with a temperature of 100.4 or
higher.
100.4 or above: Students and staff with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will be sent
home for the day. Students and staff may not return to school until the appropriate
measures have taken place including, but are not limited to, receiving a negative COVID-
19 test result, doctor’s note, self-quarantining for a period of time.
Temperature During Day: If a student or staff member has a temperature of
100.4 or above during the course of the day, the same rule applies as above.
Communication: Please see the Communications and Emergency Procedures
section regarding communications out to the SGGCS community.
Positive COVID-19 Results: If a student or staff member tests positive for
COVID-19, SGGCS will respect privacy, but also ensure that protocols and
procedures for communication have been followed, including communication
with the Diocese of Charleston.
Contact Tracing: Contract tracing only works if and when positive
COVID-19 test results come back quickly. SGGCS will attempt to do the
best it can to identify persons and spaces that came into contact with
the infected person, but are limited in its resources. Overall, masking,
social distancing, cleaning, and washing hands are proven to help limit
the spread.
Positive Test Results: A positive test result does not mean that a class
should close and self-quarantine. Students who test positive must
remain away from campus as written above. SGGCS will continue its in-
person academic and spiritual programs keeping in mind masking, social
distancing, cleaning, and washing hands to help limit the spread.
Families will be given the option to have their children virtually learn
until a period of time has passed.
Forced Closure: Based on guidelines from the Diocese of Charleston,
DHEC, and/or CDC, SGGCS may be forced to close the building and
switch to remote/virtual learning because of the number of cases of
COVID-19 in the school.
JPII Students: Students of JPII who have a sibling that attends SGGCS, and rides the JPII bus, may
not exit the car in front of SGGCS, but must be escorted by the parent to the JPII bus for their
admissions requirements.
10
Denied Bus Entry: If, for some unforeseen reason, a JPII student is denied entry onto the
JPII bus and the parent has departed campus, the student may not be permitted into
SGGCS unless explicit permission is given from the administration (i.e. student’s life is in
danger, threatening weather, etc.). SGGCS will do whatever possible to contact the
student’s parents. Meanwhile, the student should remain on the outside benches of
SGGCS. JPII’s main office will be notified by SGGCS, as well.
Hand Sanitizer: Hand Sanitizer will be available for students, staff, and visitors as they enter the
school building or elsewhere throughout the complex/campus.
Denying Entry: SGGCS reserves the right to deny entry to staff, students, and/or visitors at any
time, but especially to those who have any contagious disease, including COVID-19, or are liable
to transmit it after exposure.
Dismissal
Carpool: SGGCS will begin carpool at 2:45 pm and anticipate it ending at approximately 3:00 pm.
Students in PK and K will be permitted to sit on the outside benches, socially distanced. All other
students will remain in their assigned space/classroom and be dismissed from that location.
1st to 3rd Grade: Students in 1st to 3rd Grades will exit the building through the west wing
exit door facing the SGGCS Fire Lane. They will report to their assigned number.
4th and 5th Grade: Students in the 4th and 5th Grades will depart from their classroom’s
outside door. They will report to their assigned number.
6th Grade: Students in the 6th Grade will depart the building through the east wing exit
door facing the SGGCS Fire Lane. They will report to their assigned number.
Other Spaces: In the event that other space is needed (i.e. Computer Lab, Science Lab)
for student use, students will be expected to stay in that space and be dismissed
from that classroom exiting out the east wing or west wing doors facing the SGGCS Fire
Lane based on their location in the building.
Staff: All staff will be utilized to assist in the dismissal process and will be assigned a
location at the beginning of the school year by the school administration.
Extended Day Care: All students will remain in their assigned space/classroom until carpool is
completed. Once carpool has finished, students enrolled in EDC will report to their assigned
space/classroom. Roll will take place and a pre-packaged snack will be provided.
PK and K: Students in EDC who are in the PK and K will play outside from 3 pm to 6 pm.
1st to 6th Grade: Students in EDC who are in the 1st to 6th Grades will complete Study Hall
from 3 pm to 4 pm. At 4 pm, students will be invited to leave their assigned
space/classroom to play outside.
Study Hall: Study Hall will be spread out into available classrooms and spaces
and will not be centrally located in the Library, at least to start the school year.
Play: The same recess rules will apply to free play in Extended Day Care.
11
Inclement Weather Days: On days when the weather is not conducive to outside play,
the indoor recess rules will apply.
Athletics: All students will remain in their assigned space/classroom until carpool is completed.
Once carpool has finished, students registered for an after-school sport will be picked up by the
Athletic Director and/or coach from their assigned space. The Athletic Director and/or coach will
locate a suitable space for students to change and report to their practice/game location.
JPII Athletics: Students who participate in JPII athletics and are waiting on the JPII bus
will be dismissed when called. SGGCS assumes JPII will screen students prior to entry on
the athletics bus. If a student is denied entry, then they will be placed on a bench
outside of SGGCS and parents will be contacted.
Health and Safety
If Sick, Stay Home Policy: SGGCS will communicate often and regularly that if a student (or
someone in the family has been sick or is currently sick) is sick, then they need to stay home.
Students can login virtually for the day. The same rule will apply for staff.
Monitoring and Continued Screening: All staff must monitor and continue to screen students
throughout the course of the school day and all after-school activities/events. Teachers and staff
must be prepared to take the temperature of a student and watch for symptoms. If a student
presents themselves as potentially having COVID-19, they must not be sent out of the classroom
until the main office is notified. The main office will then be prepared to receive the student in
the designated space. For all other injuries or non-related COVID-19 issues, students may come
to the Nurse’s Station if it cannot be treated within the classroom environment. Students must
not be sent for band aids, wraps, ice packs, etc.
Random Temperature Checks: SGGCS reserves the right to randomly check the
temperature of any student or staff member throughout the course of the school day.
Isolation: Students and/or staff who are suspected of having COVID-19 symptoms will
be moved into a designated space.
Sanitization: The room or learning space where the suspected ill student/staff member
will be sanitized and cleaned. Doors will be open to increase air circulation in that space,
if possible. Other areas of the building where the suspected ill student/staff member
(such as bathroom, common areas, etc.) visited will be cleaned. Any other available
resource may be used. The students/staff may be moved to another location.
Communication: See the Communications and Emergency Procedures section of this
document.
COVID-19 Testing: See the Temperature Rule under the Arrival section in Buildings,
Health and Safety, and Daily Operations in this document.
Logs and Records: Logs and records will be kept, especially if a student/staff member
tests positive. SGGCS will communicate with all entities (as described in the
12
Communications and Emergency Procedures section of this document) and reach out to
local health officials for assistance, if necessary.
Cuts and Scrapes: To limit transitions, classrooms will be supplied with bandages and
other minor medical supplies to assist students. Ice packs may be placed in the Art
Room and Science Lab.
Clean Facilities: To protect the health and safety of students and staff to the best of its abilities,
SGGCS will provide cleaning products and follow updated guidelines from government agencies
on disinfecting, sanitizing, and cleaning the school facilities. For more information about the
school’s cleaning procedures, please visit Appendix B at the conclusion of this document.
Appendix B: Appendix B has information on cleaning/sanitizing toys, playgrounds,
outdoor equipment, daily classroom cleaning procedures, etc.
Clean Then Sanitize: The Center for Disease Control recommends that surfaces be
cleaned with soap and water and then sanitized with a recommended cleaning product.
Classrooms should not only have available cleaning supplies, but a supply of dish
detergent or soap product should be available.
Hand Washing: Students and staff will be encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water
throughout the day. If soap or water are not readily available, hand sanitizers with at least 60%
alcohol should be used. To start the day, it is recommended that every student wash their hands
as they enter the classroom. Hand washing should continue throughout the day. Students
should wash their hands prior to recess/PE and then again as they come in from outside play.
Hygiene Practices: “Good” hygiene practices will be enforced starting the first day of school.
Aside from hand washing, students will be encouraged to cough and sneeze in their
sleeves/elbows or into a tissue/towel, not touch their face or touch anyone else, bathe regularly
at home, and cleaning their own space(s) regularly.
Restrooms: Teachers and staff will be expected to review restroom procedures with
students at the beginning of the year. Students must clean up after themselves in the
restroom, as best as possible, and wash their hands with soap and water. Maintenance
will monitor the bathroom cleanliness throughout the school day and teachers/staff
should be prepared to take an opportunity to wipe off a counter if it is messy. Gloves
will be available. For more information regarding restrooms, please see
Restrooms/Restroom Breaks under the Academics, Instruction/Student Support Services,
and Learning Environment(s) section.
Cleaning Supplies: Families will be expected to provided wipes and sanitizer, as usual, but
SGGCS understands that these products are currently difficult to obtain. The maintenance staff
is prepared and is currently working with various vendors on obtaining additional supplies that
will be needed for the staff and students at SGGCS, and groups such as Youth Ministry, that
utilize the school’s facilities. Dish detergent/soap products will also be available or requested
from families for classroom/school use.
13
Gloves: There is a supply of rubber gloves available in the Nurse’s Station and each
classroom will be given a small pack to begin the year.
Student Care Plans: Student health plans are updated on RenWeb and it is the responsibility of
staff to review those plans regularly.
Face Masks and Personal Protection Equipment
Students: Students are encouraged to wear a face mask and will, at times, be required to wear
them. When students are distanced (6 feet apart), masks may come down. Students will wear a
face mask when moving from space to space (in transition). Teachers and staff will give students
instructions on when to wear masks. Face masks should align with the SGGCS dress code and
not display inappropriate words, symbols, or messages as well as not be politically motivated,
anti-Catholic/religious, or have symbols of hate. Though SGGCS will encourage simple masks, it
recognizes that this is an opportunity for students to wear something that is unique and
identifiable as their own personal face mask.
Teachers and Staff: Teachers and staff will only be required to wear a mask when working
closely with a student/group of students, meeting with parents and colleagues (unless socially
distanced), and moving from space to space (individually or guiding a class or group of students
to their next location). Teachers and staff are permitted to teach from the front of the classroom
without the use of a mask when they are socially distanced from the nearest student(s). When
appropriate, face shields can be used, such as working in small groups or one-on-one with
students so that the student may imitate the teacher’s/staff member’s mouth. Teachers and
staff may have a face mask that is appropriate to the dress code. Teachers and staff are
encouraged to have at least more than one face mask with them during the school day.
Recording(s): Teachers should not wear a face mask when recording themselves for an
online class, but instead should either be socially distanced from the nearest student(s)
or wear a face shield.
Main Office Staff: Members of the main office should not meet with anyone without
wearing a mask. This would include meeting with guests, interacting with students,
welcoming visitors, and engaging with colleagues. No one should be permitted into the
main office unless they are there for a specific reason (i.e. meeting with the principal or
teacher, needs specific assistance).
Maintenance Staff: Members of the maintenance team should wear a mask, especially
when: cleaning/sanitizing the building, entering a class with people present, engaging
with colleagues, etc.
Nurse’s Station/COVID-19 Station
Nurse’s Station: The current nurse’s station shall remain and be designated a space where
students or staff who do NOT display symptoms of COVID-19 can continue to visit.
Nurse/Nurse Volunteer/Staff Member: The person attending to a sick student or staff
member must wear a face mask. The room will be cleaned after the person departs by
the person attending to the sick student or staff member.
14
COVID-19 Station: SGGCS will designate a restricted space where students and staff that are
displaying symptoms of COVID-19 can be evaluated and/or wait for their pick-up. The room will
contain the necessary health-related items and will be sanitized regularly as documented by
maintenance or main office records.
Location: This restricted location is currently being discussed and will be determined.
Playground and Fields (Physical Education)
Playground: The PK and K will continue to use the “small” playground area while 1st to 4th will be
permitted to use the “large” playground area. Teachers and staff will be responsible for ensuring
that students are social distancing themselves and cleaning the equipment after use. The
current recommendations are to clean “regularly,” but most importantly, have students wash
their hands prior to coming onto the playground with soap and washing their hands coming in
from the playground.
Recess: Recess times will be staggered to start the school year in order to limit the number of
students who are in the playground area. This will be a fluid plan and anticipate that some
recess periods may be shortened and/or divided into multiple times a day to accommodate
the students enrolled in SGGCS.
Recess Scenario: At the time of this writing, a possible scenario includes having the
homeroom teacher staying indoors with about half of the class while the other half is
outside playing under the supervision of the classroom assistant or assigned staff
member.
Indoor Recess: On inclement weather days, students will remain inside. Socially distanced
activities may be used. Avoid games like “Heads-Up-7-Up” or “Duck-Duck-Goose” to limit
students touching each other. Using the gym may not always be an option, especially if there
are multiple classes having recess at the same time.
Pavilions: Students may eat at the pavilions under teacher/staff member supervision. Time
will be staggered, with cleanings taking place after the meal is finished. Students must sit at
least 6 feet apart.
Outdoor Picnics: Students and staff are highly encouraged to have students bring
blankets to have outdoor picnics throughout the year. Students and staff are welcome
to use the fields behind the school, Resurrection Garden, the area around the flagpole,
or the field in front of the church for picnics. Students must sit 6 feet apart. Blankets
must be sent home after each use for cleaning. They may not remain in the
locker/cubby. Teachers/Staff must designate where students sit at the picnic tables.
Fields: Students in the 4th to 6th Grades will be invited to play in the fields behind the school.
Socially distanced games should be played. This would include, but are not limited to, volleyball,
soccer, and kickball. Specific rules must be designed by the supervising staff member, including
no physical contact. Games such as basketball and football should be avoided until further
notice. Students can also be encouraged to run (Cross Country), go for a walk (individually or in a
small group that social distances), or tend to the gardens (under supervision).
15
Equipment: All equipment used during recess or Physical Education should be cleaned after
each use and stored properly. Students should not bring outside equipment into the building
unless explicitly permitted by the principal or classroom teacher. The equipment should be
cleaned when the student brings it into the classroom.
Physical Education: Physical Education will still be a part of the weekly routine and schedule at
SGGCS. The gym, playground, and fields will be used and the above protocols will be followed.
ACADEMICS, INSTRUCTION/STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICES, & LEARNING
ENVIRONMENT(S)
Academics and Instruction
Academics: SGGCS will continue to provide a well-rounded academic program for all students.
Though the schedule will be different, students should continue to expect core classes, high-
interest classes, and special areas/related arts as a part of the regular school day and
experience. The schedule will be developed later in the summer based on recommendations
from the Diocese of Charleston and any further updates to the Center for Disease Control (CDC)
guidelines for reopening schools.
MAP Testing: The Diocese of Charleston is moving forward with MAP Testing for the fall,
winter, and spring. This information, especially in the fall, will help to determine
individual student progress, especially coming from three months of distance learning
and two months of summer break.
Scheduling: To the greatest extent possible, SGGCS will minimize student transitions
during the day. Doing so may, and most likely will, require significant alterations to the
traditional SGGCS schedule and model.
Class Size: Each available learning space in the main school building, Parish Life Center,
and church will be measured to ascertain its square footage and be divided by 36, as
currently recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). This will help to
determine class size in that space, including teacher(s), classroom assistants, and other
support staff.
Divided Classrooms: Grade levels that cannot fit within one space will be
divided with one group remaining in the designated “homeroom,” while the
other is relocated to another learning space for the time period or day. Classes
that must be divided will be broken up based on student ability.
Enrollment: Based on current data, it is the belief at SGGCS that all students can be
physically welcomed back onto campus for the start of the academic year. At this time,
no alternating schedules (i.e. attending school every other day) are being discussed.
Instruction: Teachers will continue to create lesson plans and unit plans that are cross-cutting
(STEM/STREAM) and target diocesan/state/school idenfitied standards. Teachers should modify
16
lesson plans as appropriate and based on students’ needs. Small group instruction will continue
to be encouraged, especially for reading and math. Whole group instruction in the high-interest
and related arts classes will be suitable. High-interest classes are Social Studies, Religion, and
Science.
Virtual Learning: It is anticipated that a small percentage of the population at SGGCS
will continue to learn virtually in the first semester, with the potential for long-term.
Teachers and support staff will develop individual strategies along with the
administration to address those students who are learning from their home locations.
Some strategies include, but are not limited to, live sessions, recording the
teaching/instruction taking place (i.e. five to twenty minutes of core instruction),
recording a shorter lesson while students are working separately, or meeting with the
student(s) online during a particular part of the day.
Teacher Work Week: It is anticipated that virtual learning will be discussed at
length during Teacher Work Week (August 11 to August 17).
Distance Learning Plan: SGGCS developed a Distance Learning Plan based on a template
given to the school by the Diocese of Charleston. That plan will be initiated should or if
SGGCS be forced to close for any reason including, but not limited to, COVID-19 or other
infectious diseases, weather related (hurricane, tropical storm, snow/ice, etc.), and/or
at the bishop’s or pastor’s discretion. SGGCS already has in place the policy to follow
Beaufort County School District on weather related closings, delays, or cancellations and
will only stray from that policy based on the information in the previous sentence or
with a federal/state/local government mandate, if applicable.
Teaching Methodologies: Classroom methods, such as group work, labs, learning/play
centers, may continue, but social distancing practices must be in place. Students
will wear masks during group activities. Every precaution should be taken by the
teacher/staff member prior to starting group activities to ensure that classroom rules
will be followed and social distancing practices will be followed.
Changes to Instruction: At any given moment, changes to instruction could be
implemented by the administration based on updated information from the Diocese of
Charleston and/or recommendations/guidelines/protocols provided by health officials.
As much that can be planned will be planned, plans in these times are subject to change
and will be fluid, especially if it is recognized that a schedule is not working.
Google Classroom/SeeSaw: It is expected that all teachers will continue to utilize Google
Classroom or SeeSaw (or other online platform permitted by the school administration) even
when reopening SGGCS for the fall. These online platforms support the school’s ongoing
implementation of 1:1 devices. Teachers/Staff can post classwork and homework regularly
online, which reduces the amount of copying and limits the amount of paper/work being
handled. This may also reduce the number of books/workbooks a student has to take home
each day.
17
Absent Student/Make-Up Work: By utilizing Google Classroom/SeeSaw or other online
platforms, there will not be a significant lag in students having to make up work due to
them being out for an extended period of time due to illness, death in the family, travel,
etc.
Absences: Because of this possibility, and based on the current Diocese of
Charleston guideline on virtual learning attendance, a child who learns from
home for any period of time will be considered PRESENT should they complete a
majority of the work assigned to them during that timeframe. A child who does
not complete any of the work should be marked ABSENT for the day, but the
work should be still expected, unless the teacher has granted it to be excused.
Zoom/Teams/FaceTime: Online platforms such as Zoom, MS Teams, and FaceTime
should be used when meeting with students who are learning from home (should the
school be forced to close for any reason) or to conference with parents. By conferencing
with parents in this manner, this will limit the amount of visits a parent has to make to
the school building.
Grading Practices: The current grading practices and policies as outlined in the Parent-Student
Handbook and Faculty-Staff Handbook at SGGCS should be adhered to. Only in the event of
closing school will the administration require teachers to modify their grading practices.
RenWeb: RenWeb will be used by students and teachers in the 1st to 6th Grades. It is
anticipated that RenWeb will be used more than ever at SGGCS this year due to the
increase in forms now available on that platform to parents/students.
Google Classroom and RenWeb: SGGCS anticipates being able to link Google
Classroom and RenWeb this summer for teacher convenience.
Online Software: SGGCS continues to purchase or utilize various online software programs to
support student learning. Currently, SGGCS uses Reading A to Z, IXL, STAR/Accelerated Reader,
Studies Weekly, and other publishers (Simple Solutions, Sadlier Religion, etc.) to enhance the
learning experience for students. It is anticipated that those will continue as SGGCS reopens and
for those who are learning from home. It will also help with homework and classwork. Links will
be placed on teacher’s Google Classrooms to the programs that they utilize. Other programs are
being considered but with the current budget, programs are not anticipated to be expanded.
Tutoring Sessions: Teachers will be highly encouraged to select at least one day a week where
they will meet with students, especially those that are struggling (individually or in small group).
Teachers will invite and recommend the student(s), along with parental permission, to stay with
them from 3:00 to 3:30 pm on that day to work on core concepts that the student is lacking.
Appropriate Safe Haven, safe environment, and classroom protocols based on COVID-19 will be
used.
Student Support Services
Special Education/Special Needs: Students with IEPs, 504 Plans, Catholic Action Plans (CAPs),
and/or other accommodations/modifications should have their plans/goals reviewed prior to
18
the start of the 2020-2021 school year. Based on these plans and goals, a schedule for services
will be created by the Special Education Coordinator. SGGCS will work closely with the local
therapy groups, school district, and academic coaches to administer the plan and monitor the
goals. Therapists, support staff from the school district, and academic coaches must adhere to
SGGCS’ COVID-19 protocols as well as the Safe Haven and safe environment protocols. The
Special Education Coordinator will be responsible for informing the visiting therapists, support
staff from the school district, and academic coaches.
Special Education Room(s): After each use, the areas in which students with special
needs or student receiving services will need to be cleaned. Therapists, support staff
from the school district, and academic coaches should be informed where to find
cleaning products and how to help SGGCS clean the space that they are using.
Pull Out/Push In Assistance: Students that are pulled out of or pushed into a classroom
must wear a face mask when moving from space to space. Support staff from SGGCS
or elsewhere must adhere to the face mask or face shield protocols, for working with
individual students or small groups.
Learning Environment(s)
Desks/Chairs: Flexible seating will be only utilized in classroom settings that social distancing
can be enacted. Most classrooms will use desks and chairs. Desks and chairs must be cleaned
between classes (if exchanging) by students and staff. Maintenance will only be contacted for
major concerns or issues.
Cleaning Supplies: Cleaning supplies will be available through the maintenance
department.
Social Distancing: Desks/chairs must be set up to allow for appropriate social distancing. The
teacher should not allow students to freely move about the classroom. Permission must be
sought every and any time a student needs to move. Students should not approach the teacher
or teacher’s desk during independent or group work.
Carpets: Carpet time may be utilized by the classroom teacher but, based on the size of
the carpet, social distancing rules apply and students must report to the same spot
every time, all the time.
Sharing Materials: SGGCS strongly prohibits shared materials that cannot be properly
sanitized or cleaned after each use. These include items such as Playdough, Legos, paint/paint
brushes, classroom library books, pens/pencils, and electronic devices. Students will be
responsible for their own materials throughout the course of the day.
Paper(s): Teachers will avoid distributing or collecting papers whenever possible.
Supply Bins/Centers Bins: Classes that utilize centers or bins commonly used bins must
create individual bins for individual students. Any common bins will be removed from
the classroom (i.e. pencil jars, paper bins, stuffed animal bins, etc.).
19
Cleaning Time: Students should be instructed on how to properly clean their space.
Items that are used by an individual for a day or week or extended period of time and is
recollected back must be sanitized properly (i.e. Legos soaking in a bin of bleach water).
Library Books: Library books that are collected back should not be touched for 72 hours,
as currently recommended. This will be updated periodically to reflect updates from
health organizations.
Classroom Rules: Each classroom and learning space must have designated rules that follow the
guidelines as outlined in this document as well as the GREAT language, Parent-Student
Handbook, and Faculty-Staff Handbook. Students must be reminded of these rules on a
consistent and regular basis, no less than once a week, and reinforced with positive affirmation
(Gregory’s Gold).
Gregory’s Gold: Gregory’s Gold will continue in the 2020-2021 school year, however,
due to the limitations on providing and collecting paper documents, an electronic plan
will be developed prior to the start of the school year. This may include using the
Behavior Report located on RenWeb.
Student Assessments: Students will receive summative and formative assessments.
Performance based assessments will also be utilized (STEM/STREAM). Depending on device
availability, assessments can be placed on Google Classroom for students to complete rather
than paper.
Data Points: Software and online programs will continue to be used as ways to retrieve
information about a student and their progress/targeted goals. These include IXL,
Reading A to Z, STAR, etc.
Classroom/School Volunteers and Individuals Providing Services
Classroom Volunteers: SGGCS will not permit classroom volunteers to start the academic year.
This includes homeroom parents, lunch help, and class party help.
Recess Volunteers: SGGCS will consider the need for additional support from recess
volunteers from the parent/school community. Additional “eyes and ears” in the recess
field and playground assist in the general operations of the school. Being outside
provides opportunities for physical distancing of volunteers and offers plenty of fresh
air.
Checking-In: Recess volunteers should contact the main office by phone and
report to their assigned areas without having to enter the school building.
Teachers/staff should communicate with the recess volunteer on times and
when/where they are needed on the recess field or playground area.
Individuals Providing Services: Individuals who are providing a service to students (student
screening, title services, individual student help, small group help, therapy, academic coaching,
counseling, ESOL, etc.) and authorized by the school administration are permitted into the
school and classroom, but must follow all SGGCS health guidelines, including temperature and
health screenings, and adhere to the safe environment protocols.
20
Volunteer School Nurses: SGGCS welcomes school nurses to volunteer in the Nurse’s
Station and assist with the COVID-19 school protocols. They must be authorized by the
school administration to be permitted into the school and classroom, but must follow all
SGGCS health guidelines, including temperature and health screenings, and adhere to
the safe environment protocols.
Main Office Volunteers: To begin the year, main office volunteers may be authorized to
be in the school. They will remain in the main office and only assist in handling phone
calls/messages and greeting those who come to the main doors of the school. They
must follow all SGGCS health guidelines, including temperature and health screenings,
and adhere to the safe environment protocols.
Extended Day Care Volunteers: SGGCS will welcome Extended Day Care Volunteers to
assist in Study Hall, but are bound by the school’s protocols for COVID-19. They must be
authorized by the school administration to be permitted into the school and classroom,
but must follow all SGGCS health guidelines, including temperature and health
screenings, and adhere to the safe environment protocols.
Substitute Teachers: SGGCS understands that Substitute Teachers may be required to
help throughout the course of the school year. An updated list of subs is currently in
development. In most cases, teachers and teacher assistants or support staff will be
reassigned to a classroom for coverage for a portion of the day or the whole day,
depending on scheduling and availability.
School Resource Officer: SGGCS anticipates being assigned a school resource officer
from Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office and will welcome him/her into the school building
and ask that they follow all school health protocols.
Related Arts/Special Areas
Related Arts/Special Areas: Whenever possible, SGGCS will schedule related arts teachers to
travel from classroom to classroom. These will be determined when the schedule for the school
year (or first semester) is developed.
Restroom/Restroom Breaks
Classroom Restrooms: Classroom restrooms that are available should be monitored by the
classroom teacher and/or classroom assistant. They should be cleaned (faucets/handles and
door handles/push pads specifically) throughout the day, without disrupting the classroom pace.
Maintenance shall only be called for major concerns or issues in the classroom or school
restrooms.
Regular Maintenance Checks: The maintenance department will aim to schedule
regular bathroom checks throughout the course of the school day and will focus on
cleaning/sanitizing the counters/faucets and push pads/door handles, specifically.
Restroom Breaks: To lessen the possibility of a number of students using the available
restrooms on the east side of the building (by the 6th Grade homeroom), SGGCS will look to
implement restroom breaks for each class that does not have an individual bathroom as a part
21
of the schedule so that this is a planned portion of the day. This is currently only a possible
scenario and not yet fully vetted.
No Lines: There should be no lines that form outside of the bathrooms that were sent
by teachers/staff to use the facilities. Students should return to the classroom
immediately. SGGCS will evaluate the use of social distancing signs to place on the floors
or walls outside of restrooms to help students know where to stand if there are lines
and it is permitted by the administration.
MASS, THE SACRAMENTS, AND SPIRITUAL/RELIGIOUS EVENTS
Mass and Church Attendance
Mass: SGGCS will follow the protocols of the Diocese of Charleston and from St. Gregory
the Great Catholic Church for Masses. At this time, the pastor has asked half of the
school to attend the Friday 8:30 am Mass while the other half of the school attend the
live-streamed Mass being displayed in the Parish Life Center. All staff and students must
wear a face mask while attending church.
Catholic Faith: The Catholic faith is the reason SGGCS exists. No student will be excused
from attending Mass.
Church Attendance: Daily communicants (parishioners) are expected at the 8:30 am
Mass and other selected Mass on Fridays. Students will be socially distanced in the pews
starting at the beginning of the rows and will allow for enough space for parishioners to
attend.
Communion: Students will follow the guidelines/protocols set forth by St. Gregory the
Great Catholic Church for receiving Communion/Communion Blessing and Mass
dismissal.
Subject to Change: The Mass schedule is subject to change, especially based on new
diocesan guidelines for churches, if they become available.
Choir: Students as the choir is currently being addressed.
Classroom Volunteers: The same rules apply for classroom volunteers in this particular instance
as was mentioned under the Academics, Instruction/Student Support Services, and Learning
Environment section.
Chapel and the Sacraments
Chapel: SGGCS anticipates providing for Chapel on Thursdays during the school year. Currently,
available spaces are being reviewed.
Spiritual and Religious Events: In-person spiritual and religious events, such as the Living
Rosary, class retreats, etc., will be postponed until further notice. Opportunities for virtual
attendance to these events will be considered.
22
Sacraments: The Sacraments administered at the parish (and through parish ministries) will
follow the guidelines and protocols of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. See Communion
above.
Prayers and Announcements
Morning Prayers and Announcements: This will be determined once the school schedule has
been completed. Because of the anticipated delay in arrival of students because of health
screenings that take place in carpool, the school may delay morning prayers/announcements.
This will be discussed further during Teacher Work Week in August.
YouTube Channel: The principal may continue to use the YouTube Channel for morning
prayers and announcements as was done from March 2020 to May 2020. This way,
teachers can start the day with the prayers and announcements on their Promethean
Panels while the principal is helping to finish the health screenings.
Closing Prayers: Closing prayers will be completed at 2:40 pm each day (11:25 am on early
dismissal days) over the school’s loudspeaker.
Prayer Buddies and Service Projects
Prayer Buddies: Teachers of PK, K, 5th, and 6th should devise a way for Prayer Buddies to
continue, but in a safe way while adhering to the social distancing guidelines.
Service Projects: SGGCS will not participate in or require any community service projects that
take place outside of the school or school day during the first semester. However, SGGCS will
promote and encourage students (or classes) to participate in projects virtually, at home, and
through campaigns such as letter writing to the local nursing homes.
Food Collections: Food collections that take place in the school will be reviewed to
ensure safety protocols for bringing items into school is adhered to.
Karos Cookie/Prison Ministry Program: It is anticipated that this program will remain
cancelled through a significant portion of the first semester, if not longer.
St. Patrick Award
Ancient Order of Hibernians: The AOH will be encouraged to present the bi-monthly St. Patrick
Award to the individual student in their individual learning space or online platform until further
notice.
ATHLETICS
Sports Programs
Fall Sports: SGGCS plans to offer Cross Country (students in Grades 3 to 6) and girls Volleyball
(students in Grades 5 and 6) in the fall.
23
Winter Sports: SGGCS plans to offer boys and girls Basketball (students in Grades 5 and 6) in
the winter.
Spring Sports: SGGCS plans to offer Golf (students in Grades 4 to 6) in the spring.
JPII Athletics: Students at SGGCS who are in the 5th and 6th Grades have the opportunity to
participate in athletics offered at JPII that are NOT offered at SGGCS. Currently, these include
football, tennis, baseball, softball, and others listed on the JPII website, under athletics. Please
see JPII Athletics as well under Facilities, Health and Safety, and Daily Operations at the
beginning of this plan for information regarding the JPII athletics bus.
Intramural Sports: If SGGCS cannot proceed with a full competition schedule for any or all of its
sports programs, an in-house or intramural sports program may be evaluated.
Required Documents
Physicals: All student athletes must have an up-to-date physical before being permitted to
participate. This includes physicals that have not yet expired (i.e. set to expire in October 2020).
Online Paperwork: Some paperwork cannot be completed online and does require a
doctor’s signature. Other documents may be placed online for parents/students to
complete.
Participation Documents: All documents that JPII currently uses, including new COVID-19
waivers and letters and permission slips, will be adopted by SGGCS.
Payment: SGGCS has opened up the portals on the school’s website and through FACTS
to accept payments for programs such as athletics. This will help reduce the amount of
checks and cash that come through the main office.
Coaches
Volunteer Coach: SGGCS has always relied on volunteer coaches, including staff members, to
assist in the Athletic Program and team sports. This will continue. Each coach that
volunteers for the sport will be vetted by the Athletic Director and/or principal and must
complete all Safe Haven, safe environment, and background screening protocols as well as
follow all guidelines for the sport based on available resources including the Diocese of
Charleston, Catholic Mutual, and the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA)
SCISA Phases: SGGCS will follow the SCISA Phases to implementing full competition athletics.
Though the school is not a part of or participates in SCISA, the three phases outlined by the
association provide a guidance for schools to begin/reopen their sports programs.
Workouts and Conditionings: SGGCS will not begin any workouts or conditionings until
later in the summer. Students who are interested in Cross Country or Volleyball should
find a workout program online that caters to their needs and interests.
24
Gym and Spectators
Gym: The Parish Life Center has the gym available on some afternoons and evenings for
athletics to take place. However, scheduling conflicts may arise due to the constant shifting of
programs and church activities with the need to clean/sanitize the space after use. Therefore,
the gym may not be as available as it once was.
Spectators: When possible, SGGCS will welcome spectators to athletic events and will ask that
they follow social distancing guidelines and/or wear face masks. Catholic Mutual and/or the
SCISA Phase guidelines will address spectators, or at least is anticipated to. Please see also
Group Gatherings and Building Usage in this document.
Concession Stand: When athletic events begin full competition, the Athletic Director will
review if a concession stand will be warranted and permissible. If a concession stand
opens, it must be done so following available guidelines.
Cleaning
Cleaning: The Athletic Director and/or coaches are responsible for the gym and all athletic
equipment/athletic closet. All items used must be properly stored and cleaned/sanitized.
Maintenance must be notified if there is a major issue or concern in the gym. A checklist for
cleaning will be created and followed/signed-off by the Athletic Director or supervising
coach(es).
Tournaments and Away Games
Diocese of Charleston and SCISA or Local Tournaments: Those will be vetted if they are
available to the SGGCS athletic department.
Away Games: The Athletic Director will verify all away game locations to ensure that the
school has followed SCISA or CDC protocols before SGGCS arrives. The Athletic Director
will also ensure that, if the school has any protocols for SGGCS fans and student
athletes, they are shared with the SGGCS community prior to arrival on that campus.
Rides/Transportation: Students and families will be responsible for their own rides to
away games. Carpooling to away games will be discouraged. The bus will not be used.
GROUP GATHERINGS AND BUILDING USAGE
Group Gatherings for SGGCS (First Semester—Through to January 2021)
Back to School Night: Back to School Night will, likely, be held virtually (online session such as
Zoom, Facebook Live, YouTube Channel) this fall. Plans will be determined later in the
summer.
RavensPAC: RavensPAC Meetings will be held virtually to begin the school year. All plans for
social gatherings will be postponed until further notice. Virtual gatherings may be discussed at a
later date.
25
Adopt-a-Child: The Adopt-a-Child event is an important piece to the start of the SGGCS year and
will be announced in the near future. Online giving will be encouraged.
Running of the Halls: The annual Running of the Halls will be discussed at a later date.
Class Parties: Halloween and Christmas parties will be reviewed and discussed at a later date.
Christmas Program: The Christmas Program will be scheduled, but will be evaluated at a later
date.
Bluffton Christmas Parade: To be determined.
General Group Gatherings: All group gatherings and special activities will be reviewed, however,
the current recommendation from the Diocese of Charleston is to cancel all in-person
gatherings, if not specifically listed above.
Annual Auction/Fundraiser: This falls under the second semester and is being currently
planned for some time between the end of January and the end of March.
Group Gatherings for SGG Catholic Church (First Semester—Through to January 2021)
Church Activities: Church activities are regulated by the pastor and parish staff. School families
should follow the weekly church bulletin online at www.sgg.cc for updates and information
pertaining to the church. This includes information pertaining to the annual church picnic.
Breakfast with Santa: This joint activity between the church and school
will be reviewed before November.
Building Usage for Church Groups and Outside Groups
SGG Youth Ministry: The Youth Ministers and Catechesis will be responsible for the cleaning and
sanitization for the classrooms/learning spaces that they use in SGGCS on the days/evenings
they have scheduled.
Hispanic Ministry: SGGCS will work with the Hispanic Ministry on classroom use, though no
events are currently scheduled for the fall. The same rules and regulations apply as the SGG
Youth Ministry.
Boy/Cub Scouts: The scouts that currently meet on SGG campus fall under the church’s
protocols.
Outside Groups: Any groups outside of SGGCS, unless explicitly permitted by the pastor or
principal, may not use SGGCS facilities.
Assemblies: There will be no school-wide assemblies for the first semester (through to
January 2021).
26
FIELD EXPERIENCES AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Field Experiences
Field Trips and Experiences: All field trips and field experiences will be cancelled or postponed
for the first semester (through to January 2021). No trips will be scheduled.
Virtual Field Trips and Experiences: All teachers will be encouraged to plan a virtual
field trip periodically throughout the first semester. These may be real-time experiences
as well as pre-recorded field experiences.
Field Experts: Teachers will be encouraged to virtually welcome field experts into their
classroom through an online platform such as Zoom, FaceTime, Teams, etc. Their virtual
visits should be focused on content related to what the students are currently studying
and have a specific purpose.
Virtual Mystery Readers: Virtual mystery readers for all grades, especially in the
lower grades and Library, will be welcomed when the teacher(s) plan for it.
Extra-Curricular Activities
School Sponsored Clubs and Activities: These groups may meet during or immediately after
school, only at the school, if appropriate social distancing protocols are followed and in place.
Designated Space: The club or activities leader/sponsor will confer with the principal on
a designated space for the group. Prior to the groups entry, the room, if used before,
must be cleaned.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation
Buses: The SGGCS bus will, most likely, not be used for the first semester. However, if used by a
teacher or staff member to collect something (i.e. boards from Lowe’s for Art-Christmas
Program) or for other school-related errands, it must be cleaned after each use.
JPII Buses: JPII is responsible for their own buses that pick up and drop off at SGGCS.
Please see Arrival and Dismissal under Facilities and Daily Operations of this document.
JPII Drop Off: Students from JPII who are dropped off at SGGCS will not be
permitted into the building and must wait outside on the school benches and
follow social distance protocols. If a student from JPII needs to enter the
building (i.e. child of a staff member, needs to use the restroom, etc.), they will
be screened by a member of the front office before they are permitted into
SGGCS.
Benches: SGGCS will plan to mark appropriate socially distanced spots
on the outside benches for students to sit, if needed.
27
Carpooling: Carpooling to and from school will be strongly discouraged. It is advised that
parents/guardians bring and pick up their own children at SGGCS.
Denied Entry: Families will understand that, when they choose to carpool to school, the
family that has brought a child to school who does not pass the screening will remain
the responsibility of the carpooling family.
COMMUNICATIONS AND EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
Communications
Designated Official: The principal or principal-designated staff member will handle all
communications regarding COVID-19. No other staff member is permitted to communicate
(speak to/email/text/call other staff members or community members) COVID-19 information
without explicit permission due to health privacy laws and holding confidentiality.
COVID-19 Plans and Reopening Guidelines: Stakeholders such as the pastor, SGGCS Advisory
Council, and Parish Council will be advised of the plans and reopening guidelines that are to be
implemented.
SGGCS Community: All community members will be informed of the guidelines that
pertain to student safety, academics and learning, faith life, and programs.
SGGCS Staff: Staff will receive support and training on these guidelines and others that
are recommended or required to be followed (i.e. CDC, Diocese of Charleston, SGG
Catholic Church, etc.).
Students: It is the duty of the teacher/classroom assistant/staff member to
teach and reinforce health and safety procedures starting on the first day of
school to all students.
Concerns or Questions: Any concerns or questions that arise from the staff or community
regarding SGGCS plan for reopening must be communicated with the school principal.
Walkie-Talkies: SGGCS staff are responsible for handling and charging their assigned walkie-
talkie and must carry it/have it available on them throughout the course of the school day.
Emergency Drills
Drills: All emergency drills will take place as required and will follow social distancing
guidelines as best as possible, understanding limitations and available space. The use of
face masks will be required during drills.
Diocesan Departments and Government Agencies
Waivers: Waivers for staff and students/families is currently being vetted by the Catholic
Schools Office, Diocesan Taskforce for Reopening Catholic Schools, and diocesan officials.
Freedom of Expression and Bill of Rights: Staff or students who refuse to follow the policies,
procedures, and guidelines for reopening and maintaining a safe and healthy environment may
no longer be welcome at SGGCS.
28
Catholic Schools Office: The CSO will communicate regularly about any new updates or changes
in procedures or processes for Catholic schools. As soon as those changes are reviewed, they
will be communicated out to the school staff and/or community.
Other Offices in the Chancery: SGGCS will communicate with Catholic Mutual, Human
Resources, the Finance Department, the Communications Office, and Bishop’s Office,
among others, if COVID-19 has presented an issue or a challenge to the SGGCS
community.
Diocesan Taskforce for Reopening Catholic Schools: The taskforce has made a motion
to continue meeting regularly throughout the fall semester. There are meetings planned
in July and August. The taskforce is made up of members of the Catholic Schools Office,
Catholic school administrators, school advisory council members, diocesan advisory
council members, parents with specific experiences (i.e. lawyer), and teachers in the
Diocese of Charleston.
SGGCS Internal Taskforce for Reopening: SGGCS has an Internal Taskforce for
Reopening in the fall. The taskforce may be consulted to review any suggested
updates from the diocese or health organizations. All required updates from the
diocese or health organizations will be put into the reopening plans and staff
notified of the changes.
Department of Social Services: The PK program at SGGCS is bound by the rules and regulations
of DSS. All policies and procedures directed to faith-based registered programs will be followed.
Department of Health and Environmental Controls: SGGCS follows procedures and
recommendations from DHEC, including updates on school shot records (immunizations) and
anticipate an annual inspection of the records in the fall.
Beaufort County School District: Though SGGCS has no obligation to BCSD, because the school
receives title funds and BCSD staff visit SGGCS, it is imperative that the school and those staff
members from BCSD communicate regularly with each other, especially if there is a health
concern.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CLEANING AND DISINFECTING OUTDOOR AREAS
• Outdoor areas, like playgrounds in schools and parks generally require normal routine cleaning,
but do not require disinfection.
o Do not spray disinfectant on outdoor playgrounds- it is not an efficient use of supplies
and is not proven to reduce risk of COVID-19 to the public.
o High touch surfaces made of plastic or metal, such as grab bars and railings should be
cleaned routinely with soap/water or disinfecting wipes.
o Cleaning and disinfection of wooden surfaces (play structures, benches, tables) or
groundcovers (mulch, sand) is not recommended.
• Sidewalks and roads should not be disinfected.
o Spread of COVID-19 from these surfaces is very low and disinfection is not effective.

CLEAN AND SANITIZE TOYS
• Toys that cannot be cleaned and sanitized should not be used.
• Toys that children have placed in their mouths or that are otherwise contaminated by body
secretions or excretions should be set aside until they are cleaned by hand by a person wearing
gloves. Clean with water and detergent, rinse, sanitize with an EPA-registered disinfectant, rinse
again, and air-dry. You may also clean in a mechanical dishwasher. Be mindful of items more
likely to be placed in a child’s mouth, like play food, dishes, and utensils.
• Machine washable cloth toys should be used by one individual at a time or should not be used
at all. These toys should be laundered before being used by another child.
• Set aside toys that need to be cleaned. Place in a dish pan with soapy water or put in a separate
container marked for “soiled toys.” Keep dish pan and water out of reach from children to
prevent risk of drowning. Washing with soapy water is the ideal method for cleaning. Try to
have enough toys so that the toys can be rotated through cleanings.
• Children’s books, like other paper-based materials such as mail or envelopes, are not considered
a high risk for transmission and do not need additional cleaning or disinfection procedures.

ITEMS AND AREAS THAT REQUIRE DAILY CLEANING AND/OR SANITIZING
Routine cleaning and disinfecting Clean and disinfect at least daily (or more, depending on use patterns)
frequently touched surfaces and objects such as:
• Face shield
• Doorknobs and handles
• Stair rails and Handrails
• Student desks and chairs
• Classroom centers and shared manipulatives
• Lunchroom, Labs, Fine Arts, and Library tables and chairs
• Countertops
• Light switches
• Handles on equipment (e.g., athletic equipment, classroom bins)
• Pushbuttons on elevators and copy machines
• Shared toys
• Shared telephones
• Shared devices such as computers, computer keyboards, and mice
• Toilets, urinals, mirrors, stalls
• Sinks and faucets
• Floors
• Carpets (vacuum)
INFORMATION REGARDING VACUUMING
After cleaning and disinfection, the following recommendations may help reduce the risk to workers and
other individuals when vacuuming:
• Consider removing smaller rugs or carpets from the area completely, so there is less that needs
to be vacuumed.
• Use a vacuum equipped with a high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter, if available.
• Do not vacuum a room or space that has people in it. Wait until the room or space is empty to
vacuum, such as at night, for common spaces, or during the day for private rooms.
• Consider temporarily turning off room fans and the central HVAC system that services the room
or space, so that particles that escape from vacuuming will not circulate throughout the facility.

INFORMATION REGARDING CLEANING FLOORS
If a classroom’s floors are laminate, mix equal parts water and non-toxic floor cleaner, and mop back
and forth starting from one corner of the room and working your way to the opposite corner. Allow the
floor to dry before reassessing and cleaning any stubborn grime that did not come out with the first
mopping. For stubborn stains on laminate flooring, mix equal parts white vinegar and water, dampen a
clean mop, and mop the stain or dirt vigorously.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUTH SPORTS FROM THE CDC

MAINTAINING HEALTHY ENVIRONMENTS
FOR SPORTS, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, AND PLAY
• Cleaning and Disinfection
o Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces on the field, court, or play surface at
least daily, or between uses as much as possible. Use of shared objects and equipment
(e.g., balls, bats, gymnastics equipment) should be limited, or cleaned between use by
each individual if possible.
o Develop a schedule for increased, routine cleaning and disinfection.
o Identify an adult staff member or volunteer to ensure proper cleaning and disinfection
of objects and equipment, particularly for any shared equipment or frequently touched
surfaces.
• Shared Objects
o Discourage sharing of items that are difficult to clean, sanitize, or disinfect. Do not let
players share towels, clothing, or other items they use to wipe their faces or hands.
o Make sure there are adequate supplies of shared items to minimize sharing of
equipment to the extent possible (e.g., protective gear, balls, bats, water bottles);
otherwise, limit use of supplies and equipment to one group of players at a time and
clean and disinfect between use.
▪ Keep each player’s belongings separated from others’ and in individually labeled
containers, bags, or areas.
▪ If food is offered at any event, have pre-packaged boxes or bags for each
attendee instead of a buffet or family-style meal. Avoid sharing food and
utensils. Offer hand sanitizer or encourage hand washing.
35
• Ventilation
o If playing inside, ensure ventilation systems or fans operate properly. Increase
circulation of outdoor air as much as possible, for example by opening windows and
doors. Do not open windows and doors if doing so poses a safety or health risk (e.g., risk
of falling or triggering asthma symptoms) to players or others using the facility.
• Modified Layouts and Social (Physical) Distancing
o Identify adult staff members or volunteers to help maintain social distancing among
youth, coaches, umpires/referees, and spectators (if state and local directives allow for
spectators).
o Space players at least 6 feet apart on the field while participating in the sport (e.g.,
during warmup, skill building activities, simulation drills)
o Discourage unnecessary physical contact, such as high fives, handshakes, fist bumps, or
hugs.
o Prioritize outdoor, as opposed to indoor, practice and play as much as possible.
o Create distance between players when explaining drills or the rules of the game.
o If keeping physical distance is difficult with players in competition or group practice,
emphasize and focus on individual skill work and drills.
o Encourage players to wait in their cars with guardians until just before the beginning of
a practice, warm-up, or game, instead of forming a group.
o Limit the use of carpools or van pools. When riding in an automobile to a sports event,
encourage players to ride to the sports event with persons living in their same
household.
o If practices or competition facilities must be shared, consider increasing the amount of
time between practices and competitions to allow for one group to leave before
another group enters the facility. If possible, allow time for cleaning and/or disinfecting.
• Physical Barriers and Guides
o Provide physical guides, such as signs and tape on floors or playing fields, to make sure
that coaches and players remain at least 6 feet apart.
• Communal Spaces
o Close shared spaces such as locker rooms, if possible; otherwise, stagger use and clean
and disinfect between use.
o Limit the number of players sitting in confined player seating areas (e.g., dugouts) by
allowing players to spread out into spectator areas if more space is available (e.g., if
spectators are not allowed).
